Another thought on the game

It has been stated that the safety was the result of the lack of return on the previous play. It did definitely put them in a hole. However; a ball just outside the opponent's endzone is not a safety. In fact, safeties are fairly rare. This safety occurred because of the pressure from the Mount defense and the QB sack in the end zone. Mount's "D" deserves credit.
Maybe I have at least a partial clue! Thank you for your patience!

Every Mount Union player would sacrifice individual awards for a National Championship.  Fulford's legal issues most likely did  play a part in his post season recognition, and it should.  This is Division III, not Baylor, Florida State, or the like.

The "luck" involved in any catch, run, or safety is the luck that you are fortunate to be there and participating.  Not many kids can play college football. It is a true blessing to possess the gifts to be able to play, be a member of a team, and have the support of family and friends in your journey.

I am lucky to have witnessed Mount's great success over the years.  Let's appreciate the fact that we are here and able to celebrate together, some of my friends who celebrated in 1993 are not here to celebrate today.

Merry Christmas to all.  Although I would not recognize most of you on the street, the posters on this board have become friends over the years and i wish you the best.

Thanks Pat Coleman, Keith, Ryan and all for your continued dedication and providing the opportunity to discuss DIII football.

No UMHB fans are making any excuses for the loss to UMU. The posts that I see are coming from fans who support other teams.

Here is an excerpt from what I posted on the ASC forum:

Mount Union had a great defensive game plan and exploited UMHB's obvious weaknesses. All credit to UMU, however, the Purple Raiders did not put the clamps on some kind of offensive juggernaut. Every serious UMHB fan knew the offense was not up to the par of past CRU offenses and was not championship caliber. We knew UMHB would go only as far as the defense could take The CRU.

On the defensive side of the Stagg Bowl for UMHB, The CRU did enough to win. They kept a high powered Raider offense in check. Concerning the long pass for a TD, two UMHB defenders had an opportunity to make the interception and did not. The UMU receiver maintained concentration and made a great catch. All credit goes to Hill for making the play. UMHB's defense created a couple of turnovers, but they were pretty deep in CRU territory and the offense quickly gave the ball back to UMU. The offense gave no help to the UMHB D.

The call for running into the kicker on the punt return seemed to be the right call for me sitting in the stadium. Others said replay made it seem a bit more controversial. I suspect that is a bit of UMHB bias coming through. It really matters not because it is the call the ref made, so a great play was wiped out. It was a play The CRU really needed.

Congratulations on UMU for a great win. UMHB has a lot of work to do in order to have any chance for a Stagg Bowl run in 2018.

dlippiel

dlip just wants to say how impressed he was with the level of football being played during the Stagg. Holy **** that was some good football and dlip can do nothing but stare in awe at both UMU and UMHB. What great programs! To dlip, these two programs are great for D3 football and set the bar so very high for the rest of us. To have such excellent students playing football at that high of a level is just ****ing awesome. Congrats to UMU on your title and congrats to UHMB on getting to the Stagg and playing your hearts out. Much much respect and admiration from this East Region fan.

1. I have no problem with Fulford being overlooked for the AA stuff but Cole Parrish ??? That one I don't get.

One of the things we do to help us with linemen every year is we ask every coach in the country for their opinion as to who the best offensive lineman was that they saw. Obviously, none of us here can say with any certainty whether Parrish was better than Vic Rodriguez, but among coaches that faced Vic Rodriguez, the support was striking.

I know, I just don't let dead horses die.
I'm sorry, but the bolded text below isn't correct.

The two UMHB defensive backs were b- e- a- t, beat. The ball went over their outstretched hands. Even if the ball ended up touching one finger of one of the DB's, that certainly doesn't qualify as "having an opportunity to make the interception".
I know it's just me, but I think there is an unintentional bit of disrespect with all of this. Hill beat the UMHB defense, Fulford threw the pass just far enough so that it could Not be intercepted. The only person that could have caught that ball, caught that ball.

So the game wasn't 3-0. It was at least 10-0. Go ahead and argue the 2 point safety.

Having fun w/ this....5-0 would have been the greatest championship game score of all time.

No disrespect at all. I said he made a great catch. He did. I am not arguing anything about the safety. It was a safety. There is no excuse, UMU made plays and won the game.

UMU played a great defensive ball game and shut down The CRU offense. UMHB's defense played a very good game and, IMO, did miss making a play on the ball and the UMU receiver made a great catch. I am entitled to my opinion, right? That play, in particular, did not make a difference in the grand scheme of the game. The FG is all that was needed to win.

However, since we don't want to disrespect Mount intentionally or unintentionally, if it will make you happy: Hill beat both defenders, he was wide open and Fulford rifled a bullet that only Hill could catch. The pair made the UMHB look silly on that play. All Hail the Purple Raiders, UMHB never had a chance. UMU was merciful and put a governor on its Ferrari of an offense so as not to embarrass The CRU in the final Stagg Bowl in Salem. Thank you UMU for being so gracious. Please allow us to kiss any one of your 13 rings.

I wish this was VK's twitter.  A&M-Commerce's head coach tweeted this, but the sentiment is the same

And to put a bow on things, Kent State has apparently found its next coach

we can back-burner the VK to Kent talk for another 2-3 years

it's going to stink for Mount to lose the best DL in the nation.  But with pretty much everything else coming back, can Mount be a unanimous preseason #1 in 2018?
