LK and the Raiders could have put 100 on the board Saturday night. He can't tell his team not to go all out, that's how injuries happen. He also has to get them ready to play four quarters. The drop off   between the first and seconed units isn't great, especially since the 2s were rested and eager to show what they can do.LK has been very creative over the years holding the score down but when a team constantly gives up the ball, and can't even come close to covering the WRs,this kind of thing happens.

Prior to the season you made the following comment on this board:

"MUC is as vulnerable as they've been since 1998"

I soundly disagreed with you at that time and offered an analysis of both sides of the ball that seemed to come to fruition this past Saturday night.

Would you like to ammend your above statement now? :)

I would advise anyone against revising a season-long prediction based on one game.

Then will just let Mount Union's play revise it for him ;)

No, actually I wouldn't.  A blow out win against a JCU team with ZERO speed doesn't make me reserve hotel space in VA quite yet.   Mount still has a ton of questions surrounding this squad.  More than any since 1998.   Maybe Jorris turns into Borchert, Garcon and Casto into Knestrick and Gollate, and Robinson turns into Chuck Moore, but until these kids do it in the big games (ONU, Cap, playoffs), there is no way you can say this team doesn't have some serious questions to answer.  Plus throw in the D-coordinator by committee.  Whether any or all of these guys become All-Americans is not the point.  My point is that we DON'T KNOW at this time what these guys are capable of.

I don't think that Mount Union needs Jorris to turn into Borchert...Garcon and Casto to become Knestrick and Gollate or Robinson to turn into Chuck Moore in order for this team to answer all of your questions and compete on a championship level.  The fact of the matter is that LK has done a very good job managing the personalities of every team he's coached on the offensive side of the ball.  Defensively, Mount's 1st string defense has yet to give up a point and they appear as stout and as fast as any team in recent history.  Gresko was not Moore, Smeck was not Borchert and Knapp did not need to be Marino to be effective and play at an elite level.  There's nobody out there that knows how this season will turnout for MUC...or for anyone else but I'm certainly encouraged and excited about their play as I was before this season started.  Knowing JCU had "ZERO speed" ...as you call it....you still were off on your point spread by more than 50 points.  Maybe teams and prognasticators alike were taking Mount a little too lightly before this season began...but  I'm sure LK is just fine with that "vulnerable" role this season.

I don't recall seeing HSCoach say that JCU had zero speed BEFORE the game, but that observation could easily be made during/after the game for those who saw the game.

I believe HSCoach has posted more than once on more than one board that his spreads arenot a prediction of the game outcome. He is trying to maximize the headaches (successfully I might add) for those playing the game in making selections.

I'd like to believe Mount is ready to steamroll the rest of their schedule but I think HSCoach's reservations are well founded. Let the season play out--I'm sure he'll admit to any errors in judgment, if any, at the right time.

BINGO!  If I would have set the spread at JCU (+45 points) like I was expecting, where is the fun in everyone picking JCU and losing?????    Look at my screwed up spread on Lakeland.  That was real interesting with 41 of 42 people picking the same team.  Yippie, what fun!

And since you keep bringing up my "vulnerable" comment, go back and read what I said.  I didn't say MUC is going to lose 4 games because they don't have a Borchert, Marino and Moore.  What I said is that given the lack of RETURNING talent, Mount may be as vulnerable as they've been since 1998.  And I stand by that comment.  Until these guys are PROVEN playmakers, terms like "vulnerable", "questionable" and "unknown" are appropriate.   After the season they might be, they might not.  But in the preseason, as well as in week 2, I think that description is accurate.

And in comparison to previous years, did you think Mount was "vulnerable" in 1993 with Ballard and Co returing after a tough semi-final loss in '92?   What about in 1994 after practically the entire team graduated in 1993?  Hmmm, I would classify that as "vulnerable".  How about in 1997 when MUC wins the '96 Stagg by 32 and returns everybody again.  Sounds like a "sure bet" to me.  Whereas '98 would be "vulnerable" as they returned very little from the 97 juggernaut.

My use of "vulnerable" doesn't mean I expect them to lose.  Nor does it mean they will.  It just means that if ONU or Capital were break their strangle hold on the OAC, it might come in a year where they're breaking in a new guys at QB, RB, WR, TE, LB, etc and the D-coordinator.

Has anybody called 4u to see if the rope was long enough or not? I am concerned.  b4uknewit, Purple is back eh?  Still trying to figure out when they left.  ???  HS--  I agree with most of your prior posts, but damn,  why is it everybody has to compare these kids with teams of years past?  Why do I have to keep asking THIS question?  These are different kids with a somewhat different system and surely not the the SAME D Coord.   I'd like to hear what Monty's thoughts were on the game.  I'm confident he was happy for the boys in Purple but I bet even he was a little stunned.  Here's  to further success  ROLL~~RAIDERS

for all of you who follow "Reality Check" and his religious fervor, please read my post on the NCAC site...

i have some experience in college athletics and deal with Midwest colleges on a regular basis...

i have a healthy appreciation for D3 but an awareness of a change...if that is a crime so be it...

my question to "Reality Check" is this...how many "checks" have you written to colleges young man?...

I've basically written one check every month for the last three years.  Thanks for asking.

How many boxes of kleenex have you bought old man?

And Scotty, give the "young man" stuff a rest.  If you are trying to imply wisdom and maturity just because you are old enough to father four children then I will reference the half dozen emails you sent me one night which was nothing more than harassing.

Personally i loved every minute of the game.  70 points! WOW! The message to the OAC and to the nation was sent. Jorris had all day to throw the ball.  I think the O-line really stepped it up this week and protected the quarterback unbelievably.  I think this is the best o-line this school has seen in years.  They are faster, quicker, and stronger than in years past.  I can not wait to see what else this unit can do.  With Jorris gettin all sorts of time in the pocket, then we'll see how many more TD's he passes for this season.

Scotty, there is no fear in discussing non-football related questions in the offseason, but you are on your witch-hunt while there is good football being played.  As some have tried to tell you, a 70-0 defeat does not mean there is an Apocalypse upon us.

Because that's what fans do.  Coaches do it too, they just don't talk about it on the internet.  Parents hate those kinds of comparison because it's their kid that's getting questioned.

Please don't take offense to my comparison of past players, it's not a slam on the guys we have now.  It's an honor that we're even comparing Jorris' game to the likes of Ballard and Borchert.  For those of us that have been around to see the entire LK run, mentioning anyone in the same breath as those two is a huge compliment!
