Yup. Nary a one of those guys is going to play in the Stagg Bowl.

You hope not.

You don't think Markeith Miller plays in the Stagg Bowl?

Not in 2018. But I don't claim neutrality in the matter.

Ahhh the first "you havent seen a team like us" comment. Now it's really the playoffs !

I miss this.  Used to happen every year at the turn of the century and for a few years after that.  And every time Mount Union mount-unioned the other team.

Pat Coleman called it "Machining." I like that terminology.

The worst one I witnessed in person was Wesley in 2014 - I remember meeting up with Pat and wesleydad at half...and NOBODY out of the three of us had anything to say:  VERY rare.

Then again I don't believe Wesley was guilty of "you've never seen", but they were following up the 2013 Quarterfinal barnburner in Alliance and had the regional players of the year for BOTH offense and defense.

You expect a 70 spot on Widener but not those Wesley teams.

^  Yes, that was a surprising one.  I was comfortable Mount would win but not like that.

One thing has proven to be very consistent,  if you're not ready to play and make mistakes, Mount is very likely to bury you.  Hasn't happened every time,  but it's happened many more times than it hasn't.   Not many teams have taken that punch to the gut and fought thru it.  UWW, MHB and JCU have been the only teams in my mind that have consistently weathered the Mount run and made them play for 60 minutes.

Someone over on the CCIW page listed out the playoff history for NCC which got me thinking about the unbelievable run that Mount has been on since the late 1980's.   The numbers below are just playoff games.

Overall playoff record:  99-16
Regional Round 1:  28-1 (only loss in 1990 against Allegheny 26-15 who won the Stagg)
Regional Round 2:  25-3 (last loss in 1994 against Albion 34-33 who won the Stagg)
Regional Round 3:  13-0
Semi-Finals:  20-5 (last loss in 2016 against MHB 14-12 who won the Stagg)
Stagg Bowl:  13-7 (last loss to in 2014 against UWW 43-34)

Other items of note:
a)  of the 16 playoff losses, 14 have been to the eventual champ and the other 2 were to the eventual runner-up
b)  last time Mount failed to make it to at least the semi-finals is 1994
c)  average score of a Mount loss:  28.6 to 18.4
d)  average scope of a Mount Stagg Bowl win:  36.4 to 18.5

Who Mount has lost to and how many times:
Allegheny = 1
Albion = 1
Rowan = 1
St. John's = 1
Augustana = 2
La Crosse = 2
MHB = 2
Whitewater = 6

Note this data does not include the 2018 playoff win over Denison in Round 1.  Also I'm considering Round 3 the regionals final once the playoffs expanded in 2005.  Prior to '05, Round 3 is ignored and I jump straight from Round 2 to the Semi-Finals.

I'd post my actual summary table but that's beyond my computer skills.

It is generally fun to watch. And I do think it's pretty funny to watch, especially back in the day when it happened more frequently.

But in 2003 I remember the Johnnie faithful on the boards, going up against a team being touted as Mount's 'Best Ever' (going for their 4th straight Natty no less) and making the arguments that they were going to win because of moxie. And several making the argument, 'but you've never faced a player like X before.'

Of course, Player X was Johnnie Jesus, aka Blake Elliot, and he was kinda special. He was also surrounded by guys like Cam McCambridge and Jeremy Hood who did actually have loads of moxie too.

Anyone who touted the 03 squad as best ever had not watched much Mount Union football.  2003 was one of their weakest squads.  They didn't even have a starting QB or RB.  They rotated QB's during games.  They rotated tailbacks as well.  That wasn't because there was an overflow of talent.

Agree 100%.

'03 and '04 were not great teams.  Zac Bruney at QB was serviceable at best and the RB tandem of Ciccone & Strauch were even less.

'10 and '11 with an injured Neal Seaman and Matt Piloto pissing down his leg were similar to '03 and '04.   Mount teams that overcame sub-par QB's to reach the semi's or stagg.

The QB that gets overlooked and/or downplayed is Kurt Rocco in 2009.  Lost to UWW in the Stagg but not because of QB play.  Rocco threw for 383 and 3 TD's and no INT's.  That team had a chance but a 4th quarter Morring fumble doomed their ability to close the deal.  If everything else is equal, Mount wins in '10 and '11 if Rocco was QB instead of Piloto.  In all honesty, they probably win in '10 and '11 if Seaman is healthy enough to play over Piloto.

This trip down memory lane reminds of how important it is that Fulford gets healthy soon.  Much like '10 and '11, the '18 Raiders don't have the back-up QB on the roster to finish it with title #14.
