One of the names I saw mentioned for the Akron job was Tom Arth.  That surprised me, but it makes sense from Akron's side.  Not sure Arth would agree.

FWIW the hot name is UC DC Marcus Freeman.  He's a rising star according to the experts.  He was an assistant at Kent and from the article in the Beacon was thought of so highly that him being only 26 at that time was the thing that kept him from being offered the Kent job back then.

Akron's facilities appear to be top quality, Their stadium is a beautiful one, I think they have an indoor facility, and the location, like Kent State, is in a prime recruiting region.  It is amazing to me that neither Kent nor Akron has been able to sustain any success. Perhaps the close proximity of the MAC schools make recruiting difficult, but Solich has regularly gotten it done, now Leipold is settling in.  Toledo, strong consistently and the Michigan schools have had their successes.
I think a dynamic guy with a positive outlook and philosophy could do it.  VK?  I seriously doubt it.  He appears, like dad, no nonsense and not a self promoter that you may need at a place like Akron. Money would be nice, but I believe he could get a better gig down the line.

Not only do Kent and Akron have to compete over the same geographic area recruits with each other but YSU is probably recruiting a lot of the same guys as well. And then mount union probably pulls some of their preferred walk on level guys. NEO can be a competitive place to recruit.

IMHO, Akron is financially in serious trouble, Kent does NOT care about football. and neither does BGSU.  Taking a D1 job sounds great, but if the admin and community don't support you as a coach, it's very difficult to win.  There's a huge difference between Akron/Kent and a place like Toledo, where they actually make an effort to be good.  Both Campbell and Candle are great coaches, but I am sure if you asked them, they would tell you that a successful program has a lot of support.

HScoach

I agree.  I'm an Akron grad and I wholeheartedly believe that taking a coaching job at Akron is not a good career move.  Outside of the engineering school, they're dying a slow and painful death.  Kind of sad to see, but years of mismanagement and over building are finally catching up with them.   Both academically and athletically.   They should have stayed DI-AA with YSU instead of trying to step up to D1.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Dr. Acula

Akron made their own bed.  They mistakenly thought that if they poured a bunch of dough into their new stadium and facilities it would lead to becoming like a poor man's Boise St. or something.  They were wrong and they severely overspent in the process.  About the only thing they wisely did was something Mount did as well....close off the through streets running through campus.  HScoach I'm sure was there back in the day when Akron wasn't even a campus so much as University buildings occupying city blocks.  It was a commuter school.  Now it's at least a walkable campus.

p.s. The last dumb Akron thing I heard was that they want to stop using the JAR and build an arena near Canal Park.  Unless the City has tons of uses for that I can't see how that's a smart move.

Is Johns Hopkins University connected to the Medical Center of the same name?

Yup!

Well...
My medical insurance card says "Johns Hopkins," but they are all baffled as to why I bleed PURPLE & WHITE!!!
GO RAIDERS!!!!!

You might be a die-hard Mount Union fan but I'm pretty sure you bleed a mixture of stout beer and beef jerkey.

I said it before, and I'll say it again ... My medical insurance card says "Johns Hopkins," but they are all baffled as to why I bleed PURPLE & WHITE!!!

Media is plural. I only know of one outlet being affected.

And you know why.  Not sure what anyone is trying to prove with that stance, but I do know that "a certain reporter" did more than ruffle a few feathers.

My thoughts are eh...get over it & move on.

Is that certain "reporter" someone who is on our staff listing? I'm betting not.

We don't move on from covering Mount Union just because the powers that be want to freeze us out. But after a year, I think it's time to talk about why current Purple Raiders aren't quoted in our stories and why we've written less this year than in the past.

Doing this by I-phone so I have no clue how this will end up.  Pat, you & LK were never "best friends".  LK was very old school & just didn't buy into social media, etc as it is today.  VK is part of the embrace of the here & now, but if you think for one minute they don't think their STUDENT/athletes are off limits then you are applying non-Mount journalism in your viewpoint.  Not saying that is wrong, just trying to give a narrative from a Mount fan (who knows nothing) viewpoint.

One would certainly HOPE so!! ;D

UMU 'journalism' is the role of the UMU SID, not of d3football.com.

If UMU can't grasp that distinction, I shudder for the education of UMU students. :(

It's never been my goal to be best friends with Division III head coaches -- I don't think it's appropriate to be so as an independent journalist. But at one of the early Stagg Bowls, maybe 2003, I finally asked him a non-dumb question and I felt like we had a pretty good working relationship after that.

All that was well before social media was part of the equation.

It would be much better if someone would come out and clearly said something rather than talking around everything. Clarity is valued.

edward de vere

Indeed.

Unfortunately, Mount Union President Dick Merriman, Athletic Director Larry Kehres and Football Head Coach Vince Kehres aren't saying word one for public consumption.

Which is concerning, since there is no greater advocate for D3 football than this website.  (And you can't see the next biggest advocate with the Hubble Space Telescope.)

It is a difficult journey this year and too many are jumping to conclusions.  It will be better understood in the end when everything comes out.

I'm on your side Pat. What's happening at my old alma mater?  ???

Apparently Mount Union didn't like being asked the tough questions last year surrounding their starting QB and his criminal background and they're still holding a grudge over it. Sounds like someone at MU needs to man up and get over it.

It will make more sense when it all plays out after the season is over.

I have a procedure question

I know the teams exchange 3 game films before a game. It used to be that the last game was skipped. The 3 prior to that would be exchanged. In other words, if Mount beats JHU, would THAT game be skipped? Help! And remember, I get mixed up!  ::)

ANNOUNCEMENT ❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️

Urban Meyer's last game will be the Rose Bowl. Will be replaced by the OC, who filled in when Meyer was on suspension. Guess Matt didn't get the job.  :P
