Thoughts from yesterday...

First off, regarding the secondary....I don't understand the doom and gloom.  As I mentioned after RHIT you have an ENTIRE NEW SECONDARY.  And not four guys that all played together last season as the 2's.  And as K&J pointed out, a new DC too.  Even with good players it takes time to learn the scheme and each other.  With JCU looking less than lethal offensively their schedule is set up for them to grow up and be ready come playoff time.   We have the best coaches and a ton of time.  I'll take my chances with that combo.

My biggest take away from yesterday was that BW is just better than they've been.  They still lack difference makers on both sides of the ball which will keep them from making/doing anything in the playoffs IMO, but they are just solid across the board.  The difference between Snell and Hilvert is noticeable.  BW is getting better every year.  They play hard, they play smart, they play tough up front.  These were all former trademarks of BW and it seems they're coming back now.  I think they'll have trouble scoring on JCU, but JCU only put up 14 at Ott.  BW could win that game.

Kordell Ford grabbed that start and ran with it.  He made some big plays.  That TFL on 1st down at the 15 after (another) bad snap on a punt was huge.

Did Ethan McComb play?  I saw Brunson out there to start and never saw McComb yesterday.  Hopefully he is okay.

I like that they're showing varied looks with TE, FB, Petro and Garcia out there together, etc.  And as part of that it always makes me happy when you see a kid Petro's position out there blocking his a$$ off for Garcia.  It reminds me of the days of Moore/Pugh or Lantos/Evans/Gorius.  Those guys had no egos about carries or touchdowns.  Just do your job and win the game.

I think overall Mount just didn't look crisp.  Defensively I'm not worried with that right now as I mentioned above.  Offensively is a different story.  You have a veteran unit.  You probably shouldn't look that sloppy, but I give some credit there to BW.  They played pretty well.  Fulford settled down and played better after the first couple series.  BW did a good job on Hill early, but he's just too good to hold down all game.  They just get the ball in his hands and he just "out athletes" you eventually.

JCU is going to be a battle.  Their D is excellent as usual.  It's going to be interesting to see how the O line does because this will be the best D they see until probably the quarters at least.  Defensively they'll be tested in the respect that JCU has a QB that can run and 2 RB's who are excellent receivers (including one who is leading the team in receiving!).

My friends, JCUStreaks70 and bluestreak66

We took care of Baldwin-Wallace yesterday. You're next. This coming Saturday, "The Machine" comes to University Heights. You will see purple everywhere, even in your nightmares. You will know the feeling of defeat. You will face a juggernaught like you have not seen before. You will be but an ash on the fire of fallen opponents. And all of this in "Who's house? Streaks house.".
Now, having said all that, good luck to the Streaks on Saturday. I know neither one of you will be there, but I'll make sure you are informed of the outcome.  8-)  ::)  ;D

I did miss this lol! I feel much less confident now than before whatever the hell that thing was yesterday. But recently they've been close games, and maybe the defense will stand strong and the offense can get going.

Points were hard to come by on the third week of the 2019 OAC Pick-Emthunderdog led the way with 12 points, with aueagle, bluestreak66, and desertcat1 the only other players in double-digits.  bluestreak66 used those points to bounce himself into the overall lead.

Week 4 spreads will come out Monday night.

Hey MUC57, Raider68 and you other Mount Union guys:

Great to see that Mount had a big[ger] attendance turnout of 4216 for their home game against BW yesterday!

I was surprised that we had that big a crowd, even though BW is the team "we love to hate"! You do seem to be cognizant of attendance at various games. This Saturday we play at John Carroll, picked to finish 2nd in the OAC behind the Raiders. JCU is also in the top 25. I expect a decent crowd.

Congrats to The Flying Dutchmen. We'll forget that first game. Now you're rolling. Good luck the rest of the way.  8-)  :D

Thanks MUC.  We still have some things to work on, but even then, I think the upcoming games are going to be tough against the other pre-season favorites, Trine and Albion, the former after our "bye" week date this next Saturday.

Yes, I do follow attendance in general across all the NCAA levels (and have for years), I guess it is just a topic of interest of mine, although obviously, my partiality towards DIII.  I like to see the big crowds for some of the big games rivalry games, such as the Mount/BW and JCU games as you mention, and our Hope/Albion, Hope/Alma and more recently Hope/Trine and Hope/Olivet.  I will admit, however, that sometimes I find it baffling when a smaller crowd shows up for what I thought should have been a huge crowd, although there are various reasons for that, such as games scheduled at fall break and/or holiday dates (or even as the bad weather of late fall takes place), for example.  I think we've discussed that in the past, particularly regarding the early playoff games. Sometimes, IMO, it may be due to several athletic events being played on the same date, such as football and soccer games, and in some instances, the latter being both men and women's games.

Yet, at some schools, it seems that the students or perhaps even the community just do not show up.  I think it is sad when colleges have less than a 1,000 people show up for a game-certainly embarrassing when high schools have thousands show up for games (we all know about such in states like Ohio, Texas to name a couple.) Although as I mentioned in a post on another board, look at the small enrollment Eureka College, which had some 4800 at their opening home game! At my Hope, I've been disappointed that attendance at football games just isn't the same as from years ago, even in the winning seasons.  The past three years, going 7-3, 8-2, 8-2, the home attendance has been way down, even in games that are either the big rivalries or potentially for the championship.  I have been told by some that it seems that the football just doesn't have the higher interest on our campus by the students like it did years ago and I am just not sure why.

Anyway, again thanks for the well-wishes as we continue on in the season and good luck to your Mount.  The upcoming big game with JCU for you guys should be interesting. Oh, and BTW, you better not take Wilmington lightly this year! ;)

P.S.  I actually had to "work" at our game this weekend-was busy with some injuries (unfortunately.)  My wife is always telling me that I am just having fun watching the game being on the sidelines, but I remind her that while I, of course, always prefer to not have anything to do on the sidelines other than watch the game, I am actually working ;) as my colleagues and I are always looking for potential injury patterns aside from the other duties our training staff does. :)  I always hope and love it when we have no injuries at all and, if you add in a win for the day, that makes it the best ever!

No matter the score, BW is most definitely improving and I agree that they could go 9-1.  I think this coach is getting it done and they are on the road to better times.  Watching the game and trying to be unbiased,  I saw some very good things and a better squad than I have seen for the past few years.

You do notice attendance figures at various games. I have also noticed some ever the years.
Mount Union gets very low numbers, for the most part. Even playoff games will draw only 1000-3000 people (our stadium seats 5500). When I ask students why they don't go, the response is often, "Why go? The game will be over at halftime." We drew more fans, I think, back in the 80's when the program was just developing. I have also observed some of the big venues, like UWW and UMHB, not filling the house.
What's happening, doc? There IS some really outstanding football at the Dlll level. What better way to spend a Fall afternoon than watching my team, or your team or anybody's team play this great game.
Oh well, you and I watch OUR teams. We live the excitement. We rejoice in the wins and languish in the losses. There exists a whole lot of people missing out on a lot of fun. But, I suppose, people who exercise every day, are telling me I'm missing out, too.
