Oh THAT Mount! Stay safe 66. 🍺
Haha! Admit it, you were nervous for about 3 minutes!
That Mount offense was very impressive. I feel like our defense was good at getting them into 3rd down, but almost every time, they rose up and converted 1st down.
I hope we can fix that problem for the fall when the games mean a little more!

Impressive win and start to the season for Heidelberg, beating Capital 66 to13. Most impressive was freshman QB Drew Sims with 6 TD passes.

Without a doubt Plunk is special. However, I was really disappointed with the running game.  A win is a win sure but this was as one dimensional as I can recall seeing a Raider team.  They showed some toughness after JC tied it at 14. Players and Coaches both showed poise. Great 2nd half adjustments by DE. Nice win now lets get Petro in the endzone.

1 dimension for sure, for anyone who didn't watch, Plunk set a school record for passing attempts with 58 and Ruby set a reception record as well with 16. Surprisingly mount ran the ball 27 times... lots of offensive plays last night.

I missed a good chunk of the beginning of the game, but tuned in just in time to see the JCU drive that was just a stream of defensive penalties on Mount.  Going into halftime I was befuddled by the defense, but I thought DE made good adjustments and they looked much better in the second half.  I also had to remind myself that Bradley and Griffin (the guys who presumably would start at the CB spots) are not playing currently so you're breaking in young guys who haven't played a game and Britt who played safety.  I also liked that there were some newer faces making big plays.  I thought Beers and Saahir specifically looked good.

Actually, Ruby was one shy of the reception record as he caught 16 and Adam Marino holds the record at 17.  I will double check to make sure this is correct.  Pluck appears to be really good at finding secondary receivers and is being protected very well.  The sack/fumble he had was a result of holding the ball for a very long time, IMO.
JCU defense against the run is beastly. Also, remember the Mount offensive line is very inexperienced and their run blocking schemes will take some time, but I believe JCU has perhaps the best front seven in the league.
I was surprised that 44 pass attempts was the Mount single game record.  The way they sling the ball around, I thought it would be higher. Regardless, 58 attempts is incredible.  The pass interference penalties were getting ridiculous.  Not that they were bad calls, but that the DB's kept committing them.  The penalty yardage was outrageous. The interesting thing to me was that Mount threw 58 passes and I do not believe the TE was targeted once.

Thanks for the correction regarding receptions record, I just read the game write up and he was indeed one short. The announcers during the game said he had tied it, they may have misattributed a catch to a different receiver or something.

I like to see how the new faces on defense learned, adjusted and stepped up to the challenge! Ely did a nice job in adapting some coverages.
I don't like that Mount has a difficult time running the ball (JCU front 7 is beastly and inexperienced oline), but Plunk is showing his stuff for sure! I love that he will take what is given, not just look deep every time, look off of a receiver to get another open and he will go through his progressions. He won't run like Fulford, Scott or Burke, but he does very well spreading the ball around.

BWU is 0-2, had last week's game cancelled to due to Covid, have a bye week and then host Mount Union on 4/9.

Thoughts?

Heidelberg had another big win on Friday to go 2 - 0 on the season. Freshman QB Sims threw 4 more TDs to bring his season total to 10.

It will be interesting to see how Heidelberg plays against Mount Union in a few weeks, assuming the Raiders win their next 2 games.

The Princes are off to a great start, but they beat Capital and Wilmington (not the Cream of the OAC Crop).  They still have to beat Otterbein (probably a W) and ONU on 4/9 (ONU is also 2-0) before thinking about the Raiders.

Good Luck!

Cap is really struggling again.  The Jim Collins era seems like a lifetime ago in Bexley.  Hopefully this new coach can get some traction once he gets a couple recruiting classes in.

I'm posting this as a PSA for Mount fans and it has absolutely nothing to do with football...if you're like me and a fan of all Raider sports do yourself a favor and watch the softball team play.  I watched them play because they started a week ahead of baseball and I've been hooked all season.  They are really good (14-2, #20) and they just put up runs like crazy (9 runs/gm!).  I would have never dubbed myself a big softball fan, but they are so much fun to watch they've converted me this spring.

Good mention. I've been watching them off and on for several years. Of course for years, Muskingum ruled OAC softball led by the same, stand out coach.
Really nice to see our Raiders doing well in sports other than just football.

Now, Dr. I see you posted your message at 10:44 am. I hope you weren't in the sunlight. As at least partly Romanian, I know our time is at night. Get back in the box. See you around midnight.

Good call on the Mount softball team. I had my daughter down for a camp with them a couple years ago. They have been putting in the work and the camp was great. Actually was going to do it again last year but - oh well. Anyway - boy Etta came out swinging! They weren't connecting - but they swung anyway. Mount looked unpolished, but those first year players got more from this game than a blowout. Still need work on run game - when was the last time Mount could not get anything running up the gut against the Pios? The penalties were concerning - not so much the number but the type. I counted 2 personal fouls (unsportsmanlike?). I expect those against JCU, BW, Whitewater, etc. Not really against Marietta.

Plunk was good when he needed to be - WR ditto - Petro got some chunks BUT:

JOSH STOP TRYING THE HURDLE!!!!

It worked once (literally) but even I can see it coming and I am in Westlake. It has become your "go to" and the defense knows it which is why they lay back when you start to slow down. If you didn't fool a DB from Etta - its time to retire it before you get hurt.

Most impressed with the strides the D has made - and another great game by Ely. His adjustments were spot on. A couple missteps along the way but nothing costly. The safety was classic Mount D. Nice.

No BW....@!#$%! the one game I could actually see (being only 15 mins away and easily viewable from outdside the stadium). Roll Raiders!
