The Apprentice School recruits FL kids pretty aggressively.

They play a wide range of opponents.

NAIA, D3, JC and Prep Schools.

ONU lost to....Capital?

I guess Cap's coach wasn't worried about injuries this week? It is amazing what a team can accomplish when the coaches don't phone it in. Cap ran 70 plays (compared to 36 against Mount) and threw it 27 times!!!!! Wow - they opened the playbook. In all seriousness, no wait - the previous was serious too - however, congrats to Cap's PLAYERS. Play tough. Nice win.

BTW - for those that have been to a Mount home game this year - what is the game day situation like? Not sure about Covid protocols, etc. Are they doing the brunch? Looking to go on the 6th - but the kids only seem interested in the brunch.

Can't respond to the brunch, but there are no Covid protocols being enforced in the stadium.

Geoff Dartt has a career coaching record of 11-0 which has already moved his win total above 14 Mount Union head coaches. Mount Union has moved approximately 7 wins from passing LSU on the all time college football win list. I say approximately because with the crazy world for the last year and a half it looks like keeping updated records is slipping a bit.

In any event I suspect Mount Union will pass LSU on the all time list sometime next year.

Not only lost, but lost at home...getting lit up through the air...by Cap.  I watched their game at JCU last week and thought ONU looked solid.  It looks like yesterday Hahn was out the entire 2nd half, but come on.  You gave up 35 to that Cap offense?  Yikes.  ONU's 2 losses are Cap and Musky so it's certainly puzzling.

D3 Poster

Anyone know why Hahn didn't play in the second half for ONU?

At first I thought 14 sounded way to high for # of coaches, but then I remembered they've been playing football in Alliance since 1893 lol.

But also 12 of those coaches only had 1 season.

On a related note, I didn't realize Mount had the most Ws of any non D1 program.

Brunch was available at homecoming,  that's all I know.  Pregame day tickets are only available via online sales.  Saturday tickets can still be bought at the gate with cash.

Thanks for that bit. The website doesnt seem to have much on it. Might just make a phone call....I think people still make those.

Some thoughts from Saturday:

I thought that Plunk looked good for the most part, but the 3 picks were his mistakes not bad luck.  The one on the crossing pattern was just a little behind the WR.  The other two to me it looked like he didn't step into his throw and just kinda threw it with all arm.  The first of those it looked like he couldn't step because Berg was getting some pressure right as he threw it.  Either way, just a learning experience with the decision making.  His accuracy on the short and intermediate throws continues to be excellent.  In OAC play I can't imagine they're going to have to open the playbook much more than they are now.  Just get the ball to your skill guys on short stuff and let them work.

Defensively they were good against the run and after some early issues solid against the pass for most of the game.  The one thing I will say is in the past Mount has always had a couple dudes.  The guys who make the big plays to win games.  I still haven't figured out who those guys are on this defense, but one guy who keeps making plays on big 3rd downs is Hill.  It seems like he's always getting in the backfield on big 3rd downs.

I like Dartt utilizing the 2 back set more.  Both backs can run obviously, but both can catch.  It gives them another wrinkle to test match ups.

Rarely do I mention special teams, but does it concern anyone else that Mount seems to have gone the way of analytics and abandoned FG attempts?  They're 1-2 on the season with no attempts of 40+ yds.  Back in the day LK woulda had 2 FG attempts week 1 and probably both on 1st down.  Again, it won't matter now, but I assume we will need a FG at some point in the playoffs.

Randolph-Macon is playing this school tonight.  (At least I think it's this school.)  Never heard of it but very interesting.

Apprentice is on the entire ODAC schedule this year. With only 7 conference teams, scheduling in the ODAC is a mess. Between Apprentice and Emory & Henry, who is transitioning to D2, ODAC schools only have 8 D3 games. This year's Apprentice squad is one of the better ones I've seen from them, though they lack depth and it shows toward the end of the games they've played vs. ODAC opponents. I suspect they would have beaten Guilford if COVID hadn't cancelled the game and they almost topped Ferrum, played W&L tough into the mid 3rd quarter, led Bridgewater at the half. R-MC blew them out from the start, but NNA plays R-MC's type game, and R-MC is just better, so that doesn't surprise me.

But yeah, I always groan when Apprentice shows up on the schedule. It's a marriage of convenience for the ODAC, but it really does us no good at all.

On a side note, I won't be surprised at all if W&L wins the ODAC, likely at this point but not guaranteed, and ends up back in Alliance. Can we arrange another gusty monsoon like last time????

Analytics are taking away the FG at all levels of football, but 40+ FG at the D3 level are a crapshoot.  I could see very few punts/FG in the later rounds of the playoffs.  Facing a big time offense like NCC, probably better to go for the 4th and 2 at your own 40 than punt.  Spread the defense out with 4/5 WR and those backs and you probably have a better chance to pick it up than stop the big time offense doing the same thing

The ball control passing game that Dartt is using is much different than historical Mount offenses that would score on 2-3 play drives.  I think that Plunk and the boys still have that, but it leaves less time for the 1st down FG's in 60-0 games.  I havent looked it up, but I'd bet that the Raiders are averaging far fewer drives per game than almost any recent year

I enjoyed this game, but the Heidelberg announcers were hard to hear and totally biased.  Whatev..
I'm starting to like the Mount offense, Berg's D was totally committed to stopping the big pass and giving up tons of space underneath.  I, personally, cannot figure out how a team will defend the 2 back set and these wide receivers?  It seems that 5-6 yards on first down is a given.
Plunk definitely doesnt shy away from the hard throws, which I like.  The one pick, where the berg guy one handed it, was a great play.  A little more air on that, and it was a score.  I imagine we'll see that more often, and see it work.  I like how other teams will not be able to design their based on personnel.  Two backs are as much pas as they are run, TE's take the short flat route and the over the middle.  ALL 4 Wide outs go deep, short crossers, flat routes...It's hard to pick one.

All in all, the Berg has some top talent and Mount played a less than stellar game and still walked away with a huge win.
