Boy, the OAC OOC  losses really did a number on Mount Union's SOS. Not sure exactly how Massey Ratings calculates it but they've got Mount as #223 for SOS. In comparison NCC is #33, SJU IS #8 and UWW is #1
Unfortunately, I don't think Defiance is really helping that number either. Massey has them ranked 216 out of 242

The SOS on Massey is only for the games played so far. SSF is "Strength of Schedule Future" and includes the games yet to come.

In that, Mount Union is 23, but it's really 13, because all 10 NESCAC teams are ranked ahead of Mount Union. Massey should throws those out but never does.

A 13 seems high to me.

On Massey:
1- Sweet mother of geebus in the year Two Thousand and Twenty Two there has to be a better way to lay that page out.  My word that thing is atrocious.

2- That's the wrong number of teams. I think Ken has granted Division III membership to Apprentice and Lincoln (CA) who are definitely not in Division III.

3- 216 is generous.  I don't think there 26 teams that Defiance should be favored to beat in a college football game.

Yeah -- Apprentice has been there for years, but seeing Lincoln led me to email Ken Massey for the first time.

I was going to say to just let him know, I've given him a heads up on basketball related things in the past and he has always corrected them.

Mount's SOS was always going to be terrible this year, but the OAC deciding to collectively suck is another level.  Just have to get some regionally ranked opponents in JCU, Berg, BW, ONU or Etta.  I get that it is done years in advance, but scheduling teams like Defiance should be a last resort

Pat Coleman

And I would say that it probably wasn't necessary to schedule Defiance that far in advance. Felt like it when I first heard about it, too -- it's been on the books for several years.

One thing it does, obviously, is save travel costs.

After Mount travels to Defiance next year...yikes, they have no non-conference games scheduled.  I wouldn't anticipate them flying to Texas for a game ($), but Mount hasn't historically ducked big OOC games

Pat Coleman

I would hope that Mount Union would hop on the bandwagon and schedule a big Week 1 game, like when they scheduled UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh.

Lenny Reich was actually the one scheduling those games, by the way. He also said they were close on someone for 2024-25 shortly before he left, but I have no idea who or how close it was to finished.

Someone like one of the Liberty League contenders, or Cortland, or Brockport, would also be a nice get -- at least currently.

Defiance definitely seems like an outlier, even Averett and NC Wesleyan were trying to build a program.  The UWW, UWO, St John Fisher, Albion, Allegheny, Franklin types were all playoff caliber types of OOC

Thanks for the clarification on the SOS Pat. Agreed about a big time week 1 game. I will say Westminster was an exciting matchup last year in terms of playing a ranked opponent week 1.

They'll never do it, but I have a fantasy matchup of Mount playing an OOD game for Week 1 or 2. Would love to see how they'd stack up against Slippery Rock, or another good local D2. Heck maybe even a 40 minute drive to Youngstown State could be fun for the local connection. YSU regularly plays non scholarship D1 teams so not that big of a leap in skill level.

Pat Coleman

There's nothing to gain for those scholarship schools in doing so. It takes two to tango. :)

Yeah yeah.. that's why I called it a fantasy lol.

I am sure, many of you have been, or are intimately familiar with Mount Union, and what it looks like.  Nonetheless, I have a YouTube channel that covers D3 Soccer.  I do walk about where I check out schools I a visiting, and I did one at Mount Union.
