When Anderson played at Augustana, technically there was no DIII.

Some may argue a few of the MUC teams these qb's played on were not "technically" D3 either.  :o

+ Karma for that one.   ;)

Now, now, you guys!  I'm sure we could all agree that Kenyon is definitely D3, even though they are thinking of renaming the swimming championship "annual tournament to see who is second-best THIS year"! ;D

Hey Ric, I never got to see your #8,#9,#10 QBs play. What years did they play and what were their records? Any impressive personal stats? Thanks.

Best Mount Union QB's since 1980 IMO
3. Scott Woolf

Ric,

Thanks for the PM.
I like Woolf at #3...all time.  For those who like random trivia...Scott Woolf was a rookie with the Oakland Raiders along with Bo Jackson in 1987. He's listed on the "da-Raiders" All-Time roster and wore #17 for the Silver & Black.  Weird...he went from the Raiders to the Raiders.

I never saw him play but couldnt one make a case for JCU's Larry Wanke as mong the best OAC QBs of all time?  NEver mind they were probably in the PAC then.

Dabein makes a good point but....the real test is how they played in the toughest games, against the great teams,in high pressure situations.By that measure,MUC's opponents best QB's start and end with Arth.He was magnificent twice and damn near beat us.No one else has played well or come close, last years ONU QB the exception.Ranking Purple quarterbacks is like choosing among Derby winners. In big games as underdogs, Borchert and Smeck take the gold. But the guy who broke us through was Big Jim Ballard.

November 22, 1986, Mount Union, after a 10-0 regular season, travels to the University of Dayton for a first round playoff game.  Dayton is heavily favored over Mount and many expect them to win the National Championship.

In one of the most exciting Mount Union games I have ever seen, Scott Gindlesberger passes for 302 yards and three TD's to lead Mount to a 42-36 win over the Flyers.

Mount lost the following week 16-7 to the eventual Champion, Augustana.

PS:  October 7, 2006 - Mount Union 42 ONU 14.

12-0 = 13

Most important QB in the history of Mount Union Football:

1. Larry Kehres,  Southeast HS, Diamond, Ohio
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

DaBein-
It boils down to this:  Rocky Pentello does one thing that Mount Union QB's never do.  Capital loses to teams they should beat solidly, if not blow out.  Otterbein last year, Carroll the year before that (and in 2003 if the guys in stripes didn't help out the Capital D)...Mount Union never loses those games.

Since you seem to be a big fan of statistics, I've got some for you.  Rocky Pentello is 0-4 against Mount Union and has 1 playoff appearance.  In his four games against his better purple half he hasn't exactly looked like an All American (with the exception of last year's playoff game, he was a stud).

Rocky's numbers against Mount look like this:
83-149, 988 yds, 5 TD, 7 INT

If you take the playoff game last year out of the equation:

65-121, 676 yds, 1 TD, 6 INT
Does that look like the stat line of a great quarterback?

Great QB's play their best in big games.  Peyton Manning never beat Florida, yet Tee Martin led the Vols to a National Championship the year after Manning graduated.  Rocky Pentello has not beat Mount Union, and unless he plays the best game of his career, he won't.  Until he wins the big game he will be in a different class than the national championship QB's.  People will talk about him like they talk about Tom Arth.  Very gifted physically, one of the great QB's in the OAC...BUT all the physical tools in the world didn't get a W against Mount Union.

Long time reader, first time poster...

I was just wondering if there are any topics besides Mount Union quarterbacks that we can discuss prior to tomorrow's games? Seems like there are a couple in the OAC that are pretty important... Mount vs. ONU, and Cap vs. JCU.

Any thoughts on how either game will turn out? Mount's first team hasn't played an entire game all season... Will they come out and blow ONU out in the first half like they've done everyone else this season? Is there revenge on the minds of the Raiders?

What about for ONU... Trusnik didn't play last year in their improbable victory. Does anyone see him having a big game against Mount tomorrow? This is the first of two toughies in a row for ONU. If they come out of it 1-1, they are playoff bound. If not, they will fall short again. Anyone like their chances in either of their two upcoming games?

In the other game, can JCU play better than they did against ONU to pull one out over Cap, or will Pentello just throw all over them like he's done against everyone else this season?

Let's hear some predictions, and leave the Mount quarterback discussion until the beginning of next week...

Mount big
Cap bigger

Anything else you'd like to discuss?

Hey BB:

Here's the thing.  If Mount plays up to their capabilities, the game should be a 2+ touchdown win for the Raiders.  However, all of us Mount fans thought that last year as well.  We all know what happened.  So I think we are "quietly confident", but don't want to anger the football gods with any bold predictions.

In regards to the other game, Capital wins by 3+ touchdowns.  JCU just isn't very good.  They are officially (IMHO) out of the upper tier of the OAC.  Those spots belong to Mount, CAP, and ONU.  Even pukeable BW is above JCU.   ;)

Already gave you my pick for Mount -  ONU (see above).  I believe that, unlike last year, we will see Mount's A game this week.  ONU can play their best game and not win on Saturday.  (Is my neck out far enough?)

As for Cap and JCU, I don't think it's even a contest.  The only way JCU wins is with a big time choke by Cap (ala Otterbein last year.)
12-0 = 13

bigbruce97

Thanks for humoring me fellas in getting off the MUC Quarterback topic for a few minutes.

42-14 is a pretty lopsided prediction! We'll have to see what happens. I am looking forward to hard fought game from both, but I don't see ONU pulling an upset two years in a row. However, I don't know that it will be as lopsided as 42-14...

Here's to a good weekend of games!

Ric

rscl karma for you, that was a great game.  Mount grabbed a big lead to shock the Flyers but they came storming back with a cpl late touchdowns and if memory serves may have scored in the final seconds but the kid slipped on the muddy field after catching the ball at the Mount 10.
