I was doing some thinking today (always a dangerous thing) while I was woking on cleaning up the leaves in my yard.  "Why do we keep having these 100+ yards of penalties game after game??"  After the smoke stopped coming out of my ears, I had a thought--I don't know if there is any validity to it, but I thought I would put it out there for debate:

When Monty left for places south, many of us were afraid that we would see a big drop off in the defense for good ol' MUC.  That has not proven to be the case.  But what we have seen since his departure is a real increase in the number of penalties--especially personal fouls--unsportsmanlike conduct, late hits, etc.  Last week I watched a d-back smash into one of the Capital receivers a good three seconds after the touchdown had been awarded--and he was left in the game without even getting a talking to from the coaches.

Maybe what we really lost was the sense of civility and discipline that Monty brought to both sides of the ball.  Monty was always kind of a "dad" to alot of the players.  In talking to players across the years (when Monty was here), many said they were "afraid" of pissing off LK, but that they didn't ever want to disappoint Monty.   I know that in my own life I have always been less worried about pissing someone off than I have been about disappointing someone.

I fondly remember being proud of our team's attitude on the field--always finding a ref to hand the ball to after the play--acting like they had been in the end zone before (and that they had expected to get there this time).  And when they occasionally didn't act that way, it seemed like the wrath of God would come down on them--I distinctly remember BJ Payne being hauled out of a close game a told to sit his a** down on the bench after a personal foul (I could hear the coach all the way up in the stands).

When did it become okay for one of our players to run up to the crowd after a TD and thump their chest and strike a pose?  Isn't that the kind of stuff we used to berate Rowan for when KKeeler was their coach?

When and how did we get to the point where our coaches say to the media that the players are playing with intensity so penalties are expected?  I understand the occasional illegal procedure--even the occasional holding call, but I can not and do not understand the plethora of holding and personal fouls that we have faced for the past couple of years--especially the personal fouls.

It's not just the refs--it's our players and their attitudes--and the fact that their behavior doesn't seem to be disappointing anyone (except their fans).

I did't bring up the subject one of your fans did. I have seen Mount play 6 times. Not claiming to be expert on Mount football, far from it. Just stating the facts as I see them. I do not expect Mount fans to agree with me. I just want the OAC represented with class. If that is Mount, so be it. We will be cheering for them in the Stagg Bowl.

Ric

For a Mount fan to post something about not be happy with penalties is one thing for you to pile on by declaring they don't represent the OAC with class and don't teach sportmanship is just plain stupid.

Thanks Ric for your opinion. I figured just because I was a cap parent it would make people mad. Mount people can say anything but not anybody else. You just proved my point. Thanks

What is this sudden influx of crybaby posters that think this board is dedicated to the glory that is Mount Union football and nothing else?  I made the point that polls are a bit slanted because of the large number of Mount posters represented on this board but for multiple new posters to come on here claiming you have to be pro-Raiders or you'll get picked on, complained about or whatever is just maddening.  Suck it up already and get your panties out of a wad.

Here's the facts of the matter.

1.  Mount fans outnumber at-large OAC fans on this board. (Surprise)
2.  Mount fans love Mount. (Surprise)
3.  Everyone is welcomed on this board, whether they watch teams in Alliance, Bexley, Berea or anywhere else in the OAC as long as they don't suffer from diarrhea of the mouth and have educated/coherent/informed/meaningful things to post about.

If you just want to whine, moan, cry or complain like a three year old about things you know little about and care to know even less about, save yourself the trouble and go watch a Lifetime movie or dust your Hummel figurines.

reality check has it right. Am I a mount fan? no. Am I going to brag about how I'm not? no.

I find it interesting how most of the people that are such outspoken anti-mount people are also Cap fans. It oculd be nothing more than a coincidence, so who knows. Of course the polls are going to be slanted becuase everyone's going to vote for their team's best player (example: I contemplated voting for Hedges in the Offensive POY just because I'm a BW fan, even though I strongly believe Kmic is the best player)

+karma for rc's comment, no?

Just watched the BW/OTT game on TV replay.  That was an exciting game to watch. OTT looked really prepared for BW and came back in the second half to take the lead.  Mostly on passes but their fast back also had some big break away runs.  BW stiffened on defense and  their QB showed what  an arm he has.  From what  I saw , Capital better bring their A+ game to Berea next week.  BW looks to be on a mission to make the playoffs.  One other observation,  BW punishes when they tackle and block.  They appear to be a very hard nosed football team.  And please seventies allow me this one platitude.

BW may want to bring their A++ game, as Cap is on a mission to make the post season 2 years in a row.  I am happy K. Hausler is back at safety, I just hope Cap's LB's show up & tackle Hedges.  One thing I was very impressed by was BW's WR's & their size...should be a great battle in Berea...

OK, that one appears to be on the Seventies approved platitude list, but please, no politically correct stuff allowed.  :o

Defense POY       James Starks  - Cap
                            Nick Bucci  -Cap
                            Thom Hausler  -Cap

Yeah, CAP has 3 POY candidates on D.  And people accuse Mt. Union Fans of being "Homers" too much.

BRILLIANT!
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Results for Week 10 and games for Week 11 have been posted.

I can not believe there has not been any mention of the "magic carpet" by BW fans... its only monday but I am getting excited for this game

D3 Poster

Here are the things that have irked me this year:

1)  Lack of contain on defense.  Has this been taught since the 70's?  Even when there's a blitz up the middle...no contain?

2) The pretty players...either posing after a play or wearing the skinny 'wristbands' around the biceps (especially the little wide receiver guys)

3) Off-side on kick-offs...how hard is it to stay behind the kicker?

4) The lack of defensive backs in the league that can react well to a thrown ball.

5) Do we have nine teams with o-lines that cannot run block or do we only have one team with a good running back...or both?

6) And finally...where are the decent officials working on Saturday?

theaprof

Okay--Ric, you are right about there only being four games so far this season with over 100 yards in penalties--but there are alot of penalties--we are averaging 94.888.... yards of penalties a game--that is darn near 100 yards a game.

I think that is too many penalties for too many yards. And I don't think it is fair to blame it on the refs.
