Play-off Musings   ;D

I am excited that the play-offs get under way tomorrow.  It's truly a special time of year.  However, to be perfectly honest, I have had some disturbing thoughts as of late when thinking about Mount's recent dominance, and run.

Does anyone realize how close Mount was to winning the D-III championship an amazing 10 times in a row ???  I know we are pretty good at giving other teams props if they beat the Raiders, but think about it.

'99 - Rowan finally overcomes the hurdle to beat Mount, but it takes an overtime thriller with many momentum changes to get it done.  I am not saying if Mount wins that game they go on to win the National Championship, but it sure is possible.

2003 - I know, I know....St. John's kicked the Raiders azz....but did they?  I have never seen a game that really came down to such distinct defining plays.  Knapp drops a sure touchdown pass.  SJU's fake kick for a TD right before half.  Burkhart's "ill-advised" change of play when the Raiders are ready to score.  That's 14 Mount didn't get, and 14 SJU did.  St. John's earned it (they came out ready to play while Mount was flat), but what could have been!

2004 - MHB played Mount very tough at Mount Union stadium.  However, to this day I have never seen a team use the hail mary pass as a regular weapon in their offense.  I swear their QB just threw the ball up without any clue what would happen...and lo and behold he gets two TD's out of it.  Shame on Mount for not defending better, but come on!  Again, I am not saying if Mount wins that game they go on to beat Linfield, but who knows?

Anyway, I guess I am one greedy Mount fan.  Just THINK how much Mount would be hated...errrr...respected if they had 10 in a row.   ::)

I will be very happy and thrilled if Mount runs the table and wins #9.  IF they play to their capabilities, they have a good chance.

JK  I ran across this Lombardi quote the other day   " If you can accept losing, you can't win."
"When you lose, say nothing.  When you win, say even less."   Paul Brown

skunks,

I don't believe there was any fake kick. They went for a score on fourth down and the RB ran over our DB to the end zone. It sure had a huge effect from the emotional standpoint.

Let's face it SJU beat the Raiders in '03. Plain and simple. Players made their plays which resulted in the win/loss. If we had tackled the RB before half time .......

If we had tackled Blake Elliott.....and don't forget Elliott had a clear TD called Out of Bounds too. The replay clearly shows he had "both" feet in bounds.

I am not so upset about a hail mary pass because that should not have been a situation to consider in the last minute of the game if we had TCB'ed the rest of the fourth quarter. Other than WW last year I don't remember any team scoring that many points on the Raiders in a quarter that lead to a win. We have a 14 point lead in the fourth and get 17 points scored on the D for the loss. OUCH.

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

I haven't seen it mentioned but Bo Schembechler passed away today at 77.

Class guy even if he was from the school up North.

Bo Schembeckler was a player under Woody Hayes at Miami of Ohio and also graduated from Ohio State with his Masters Degree. He also served as an assistant at Ohio State before accepting the head coaching job at TSUN. So,he was an Ohio guy after all, and should be remembered as such. You cant blame him for taking the job up north because the job at Ohio State was not open. Bo and Woody will be watching the game together as old friends and rivals...just as it should be. Im just not sure if they will be watching from Heaven or Hell. ::)

While Bo had strong Ohio roots (and never had the animosity towards OSU that Woody at least pretended to have towards TSUN), make no mistake that for the last half of his life Bo was TOTALLY a 'Michigan Man'.  (In 1989, when he was AD as well as still the coach, he famously said, when Bill Frieder gave 3-weeks notice of quitting to go to Arizona State, "A Michigan Man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State Man".  Sure enough, 3 weeks later previous assistant coach Steve Fisher was cutting down the net after Michigan's only national title in bball!)

I have no insider knowledge of from where Woody will be watching the game, but I'm pretty confident about Bo.  Despite his public persona, he was a 'teddy bear' at heart, totally beloved by former players whether stars or end-of-benchers, and he raised tens of millions of dollars for cancer research in honor of his first wife, Millie, who died at age 63 of adrenal cancer.

I've been tearing up periodically all day, and I never even met the guy.

Next Monday

Been a long time since the best football game of the weekend in Mount Union Statium was the Friday night game. You might have have to go back to when me and Runyr, Rscl70 and that LK guy were on campus and Alliance was still playing teams like Massillon and McKinley.
Hope you and Kevin are getting in the playoff spirit!!  I imagine we'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks down in Salem where we (Stone Station) will again be hosting the fan bases at the Stagg Bowl.  Since the game begins at 4:00, we should be able to have a great tailgate event!!  I am planning on bringing the brownies to both teams as well as to the fans!!  See you soon!  All the best.  And thanks again for the wonderful pics you sent me last year with the autobraphs.  I treasure them!!

Just had to post so we weren't at the bottom of the page.  Looking forward to tomorrow--and then next week--and then...........

Hope you will be available again to help carry the brownies from the car to the tailgate!!!!  Good luck as you all enjoy the play offs.  My team is in retirement mode. >:( >:( >:(  They didn't get the job done when they should have.  Oh well, I'll be at the Stagg Bowl with Stone Station.  So I'll still get to enjoy a good game and a great tailgate.

At this point Kevin and I and pretty much consumed with Ohio High School Football Playoffs. Mogadore managed to advance to the Division 6 final 4 last night so we're too burned to travel today plus I've got equipment to put away and a basketball preview to announce. HOPE Mount makes it without me and Kevin today. ;)
