Jonny Appleseed:

first of all... since east coast is the latest time zone in the usa, which loser falls asleep for the night with their tv on at 7:30 pm, let alone 4:30 pm on the west coast? who cares anyways? too bad you missed a good college football game!  second of all, it really doesnt matter which muc coach goes where. before you talk about the oac, learn a little about it!  coach paul coaches at onu, where he has done an excellent job, in fact beating muc 1/3 years (the best of any oac team in the last uhhh like 12 years), and he joined a team in the upper half of the oac. so tell me what you think a muc coach would do with a musky or a prince (smiter)???  3rdly, do you know who muc plays in the preseason each and every year and what the outcome of the scrimmage is each time, let alone the jv teams?  the teams are less than 75 miles apart, hence, the same recruiting area!  finally, the wiac is a very tough conference.  each conference has their goods and bads, why misrepresent or stand up for a conference that has such good sportsmanship and great teams?  i think you are the smiter, and if you have nothing intelligent at all to say, do not waste this space with your unconsciousness!

I asked the question about ratings because it seems a little wierd to be that the ratings would more than double in a year.  So I wondered if it had to do with being on ESPN this year which it looks like it did (Pat mentioned that the 1998 game on ESPN was similar to this years game)  I watched the d3 national championship game as I always do.  And you dont have to be asleep to have the TV off, while the cable stays on and picks up ratings, so it looks like I was probably right there.

My whole point reagarding more competition in the OAC was that someone was asking about Sirianni (whom I played under) and how it would be great for him to get a job in the OAC, but how great would it be when those teams start beating MU?  Of course they would be happy for him, but would you want him to do real well? or just ok?

It seems to me that MUs recruiting area extends a lot further than the 75 miles you speak of. (for starters I saw during the stagg bowl)

I just thought it would be like the situation for the New England Patriots and current Jets coach, Eric Mangini, who left the patriots staff to join the jets.  Bill Belechik seemed very unhappy about the move, and part of it had to do with Mangini being such a great coach leaving to a team in the same division.  Im sure Belechik doesnt hate the guy, but Im also sure hes not happy that he has to play him every year.  In fact, Im sure he was happy with Herm Edwards at the jets and wanted him to stay with the jets forever.  (Patriots already lost to the Jets this year)

Look, like I said in my original post, I was just curious if the ratings for the game reflected exactly how many people watched the game.  And I was wondering if it would be the best thing for MU football if the OAC became a better conference as a whole.  I dont think it would.  I think MU is doing just fine with the current situation.

I really don't think LK would hold such a grudge against a former player, after the time and dedication they have put into the Mount Union program just because they got a job in the OAC.  I think he has a little more class than that, and I believe many others on this board would agree with me.  In fact I know he would do everything in his power to help that former player/coach get a job in the OAC.  Also, if you look closely at the Mount Coaches, there are only a small core group that are there year in and year out.  Many come and go.  Really it does not matter who goes where, the program will still be strong.  Like they said during the broadcast of the Stagg Bowl on ESPN, "Tradition is very hard to beat."

As far as conference strength goes, the OAC team playoff record speaks for itself.  Even take MUC out of the equation and the records of those teams is still better than any other conference I believe...

Small but Slow thanks for the welcome. I know timing is everything and I should have known better than to ask posters opinions on Marietta so close to the MUC championship celebration. Someone mentioned the possibility of Coach Wiese leaving for the Whitewater job and I thought that opened the door, my bad. For those of you who care right now, I checked with some inside people at Marietta and was told that they are hoping Coach Wiese stays, I concur. They believe that Whitewater will hire within than take a chance on a first time head coach. I'm selfish so I hope he stays but I wish him the best. Whenever the celebrating of the big win is over, let me know what you think of the Marietta program. Go Blue! Go Pioneers! (still having troubles getting use to that)

Your right.  I didnt mean to imply that LK would hold a grudge against a former player, but I would assume that he doesnt want the coaches or teams hes going against to be "too good" if you know what I mean.  Even Pats fans that love Belechik would say hes out of line with his treatment of former assistant.  (The Boston media always shows the handshakes after the games and comment on how "warm and cordial" they are.)

I don't really care much about the rating debate but I don't know where in this chain of posts you think that the ratings count for tv's turned off where cable is on.  That was never proven or disproven from what I've read.  I said I was pretty sure the Nielson machines are more accurate than that based on experience and others stated the same thoughts.  You're making some big jumps to conclusion here.  I think it received a higher rating because it was on ESPN simply because while there are almost as many tv's with ESPN as ESPN2, more people are likely to stick to ESPN and if the game is worth watching they stick with it.

I think we used to see the same thing with Fox broadcasts, though the effect has lessened over time. But it used to be that any sportscast on Fox could be guaranteed to come in about a point to two points lower than the same thing on one of the big three.

Kira & Jaxon's Dad

I think LK would love to play the best each year and would welcome better competition in the OAC.  It is nice to play your 2nd and 3rd team players in 75% of the second halfs of the regular season games and it does have the advantage of keeping your starters rested, but it can't be fun just blowing everyone out all the time.

I did email my friend who works for Neilson and this was his first response (he said he would look into it more if he got a chance):

Gimme a little bit to look at that story.

I just got in and I am running a bit behind. I doubt though I'll be able to give you a good answer. There about a million ways and counting to calculate different ratings, of which I know of a few and only in a broad sense. I think they purposely make it hard and complicated and are always coming out with new ways (different products) so that we'll never have any major competitors. In my department, where we compile reports for local stations we have 30+ products they can choose from. [quote\]

Hey Pat  how up dating the D3 header. The Raiders wore Dark tops and White pants.

Pat... if you update the header put Stickley on there.... he is one of the raider faithful favorites!!

For a myriad of reasons I cannot log into Daily Dose and this comment is really meant for the "Step It Up" column...

Along with being impressed by the P Raiders in the Stagg this year I think it is impressive in the 14 years that there have been 0 sanctions or violations against the program by the OAC or the NCAA because I imagine there are people everywhere who have brought out the 'ol fine tooth comb.

A safe travel to a Merry Christmas for all you kings.

Nope, they wore Black Tops and Purple pants.  :)

And you were debunked on your other attempt to post this, 4505.

Read my answer on the other board, too.

Just to expand upon what has already been said, friends of mine who attended the public forums report to me that Wiese performed very well, didn't duck any questions, responded favorable to academic and recruiting questions, etc.  However, he would have a huge hurdle to clear to pass the two Warhawk insiders deemed to be the strongest on the short list of 4 - Stan Zweifel, longtime & current offensive coordinator for the Warhawks (peoples choice) or Lance Leipold, former Warhawk QB & WW Athletic HOF member & current Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Nebraska-Omaha (his hometown is Jefferson, WI - about 9 miles from UW-W).  Some have speculated that if Leipold got the job, Coach Z might be off to Boston College to join the staff of Jeff Jagozinski, new BC Head Coach, another former Warhawk player and coach.  Wiese is considered a strong third candidate.  Rick Willis, AD at Wartburg College & former head coach there is the fourth finalist.
