Mount Union fans and followers, who would you rather get in the Stagg; Mary Hardin Baylor or Whitewater?  Both games would be rematches of losses but which one do you want to avenge more?

RC

Great question. There is obviously a revenge factor with both of them. I personally would opt for UMHB as I felt we should have won that one. In last year's Stagg Bowl, UWW just proved to be the better team that day.

Colonel Debow Freed

He was "Dean Freed" at Mount Union.
...Dean of the College to be exact (1969-1974).  Then he was President of Monmouth College for 5 years, then ONU for 20 years, and now University of Findlay!  The guy just can't retire.  ;)  Plus, he did 23 years in the Army, West Point grad, before his stint at Mount, taught at West Point his last two years in the Army.

Just a tick faster than the guy chasing him!

Wheaton would prefer to face UWW in the Stagg :). Might as well knock of the last 2 chanps! Thanks for asking. :)

I was just reading Tuesday Morning Quarterback on ESPN.com Page2 and saw this reference to the UWW-Wartburg game from last weekend.  I figured MUC fans can save this for the next time someone brings up the "My school is a better school than Mount because..." argument.

Double Bonus Obscure College Score: Wisconsin-Whitewater 34, Wartburg 17 (Division III playoffs). Located in Waverly, Iowa, Wartburg offers a course about the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The course description reports, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer has become a focus of cultural and feminist studies ... showings of the series are a course requirement."
They should have practiced harder.

I realize its human nature to look ahead to the next opponent, but talk about it makes me nervous.  Don't want any bad karma for the Raiders heading into the Wheaton game.  MUC handled Rowan a few times before Rowan pulled off a W, same with St.Johns, UWW, and I'm sure I'm overlooking someone.  Not worried about bulletin board stuff, just bad karma.

Congrats to the three senior Cards (Mike King, Andy Fries, and BJ Wanniger) who made All-Region. All well deserved!!!!

I'm as superstitious as anyone but the question lacks a little something if I waited to ask it next week.  It's not a question of "who would you want?" at that point, it's a question of "who did you get?".  Asking now gives anyone who cares to answer the question a chance to pick from their gut, their heart or however they'd choose.

I didn't pose the question as a foregone conclusion.  I posed the question because I wanted to know which loss the average MUC fan would want to get a chance to avenge.  Of course they need to beat Wheaton first but if there were a choice and a MUC fan could pick one of these two recent losses to right, I'm just curious what the consensus would pick.

For me.....MHB by far!

New blood in the Stagg.

If we beat WW....it becomes more like "things are back to normal".

We are 0-1 vs. MHB, we are 4-1 vs. Whitewater.

UMHB won in dramatic fashion and held what a lot of people thought was a team of destiny out of the Stagg.  If I recall correctly, that Mount Union team was being held in the same class as the best of the best Raider teams until they were suddenly derailed.  Of course, that game came a couple years ago too and represents the only loss MUC has experienced short of the Stagg in a long, long time.

Whitewater represents the most recent loss and represents a missed shot at number 10.  The players all remember what it felt like to lose to the Warhawks and if asked, I'm sure they would want another shot at Whitewater because they weren't around to feel the pain against UMHB.

Both games present great storylines.  MUC needs to take care of business Saturday to ensure they get a chance at retribution in the Stagg against either of the teams discussed above.  Good luck.

rc - I understand you intentions.  I believe any of this year's final four are formidable opponents.  UWW lost a lot of seniors last year, but has come back strong.  UMHB has been a tough program the past five years that just can't get over the hump.  Wheaton has been continually building that program for the past 15 years to a north region power.  I like the thought of playing UMHB in the finals (if we are fortunate enough to get there) since it is the only team we have a losing record against.  It may provide the Raiders with some extra motivation, although I don't believe they will be any less motivated to avenge last year's Stagg against UWW.  Wheaton still concerns me.

interesting sidestory:

I was at the doctor today (preparing for shoulder surgery next month) and I mentioned that I was going to Alliance this weekend.  My doctor's son played for Dayton in the early 90s.  He was telling me the story about how in the 1991 Stagg Bowl Ithaca knocked out their QB, pretty much ending Dayton's hopes at the end of the first half.

That game was in Florida... he asked why it wasn't played down there anymore.  I told him what all has been done by the city of Salem.

I just want MUC to make the finals.  This will be my first opportunity to make it to Salem since '93.  I don't want to do anything to jinx it.  Any time I've had my hopes up too high for anything something usually goes wrong and ruins my plans.  I haven't ordered tickets, booked a hotel, or even checked out events around the game out of fear of jinxing the Raiders.
