About 15 years ago I coached junior bowling at Parkway Lanes (R.I.P) and there was an older gentleman who came in every Saturday morning. He was dressed in all purple...shirt, jacket, hat, pants and maybe the coolest thing, purple cowboy boots. Does anyone know who this gentleman was?

I think it was hscoach.

heh heh heh!  Hurf, you're doing great on the quotes today.  Too bad I can't get paid for doing as good a job teaching as hscoach does.   :D

I'd be willing to bet the remains of my IRAs that he didn't know ANY of those "surely you know!" bits until he looked 'em up.  But I'd also bet that at least half the readers here already knew at least half of them. ;)

And 50% of facts are made up 90% of the time.

And four-thirds of all Americans have trouble with statistics.
Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

usee, were u at the game.  wheaton did have guys running wide open all over the field.  it was obvious to me and i had to ask several mount people if it was normal.  they were also surprized by how open wheaton receivers were during the game.  mount has to worry if uwww can control the line of scrimmage as most teams would.

i agree with the stat comparison.  most teams stats are inflated since they are the top of the conference.  not much stock in comparing them imho.

Easterbrook strikes again. He is to Sportswriting what Pam Ward is to Sportscasting. If you have to make fun of sports your not much of a sportswriter.

Obscure fact: Your employer is broadcasting the Stagg Bowl, moron.

The really crazy thing is that Gregg Easterbrook is actually an excellent reporter EXCEPT for sports; and even manages to stifle his snarky 'inner-child'. :P

Yes that's for sure!
Its' obvious his Ritalin prescription is either in need of adjustment or the current running in through his studio chair isn't high enough amps!  ;D

Congrats to Greg as well on the Gagliardi Trophy and all his accomplishments over the past 4 years. Not only a very gifted athlete but representative of a true role model that younger ones such as my youngest son and seventiesraider's little guy and so many others can look up to and admire.

Actually he seems to crawl out of his hole this time every year, trying to make fun of Mount and the rest of D3.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

ROFLMAO!!  ;D Hurf's problem is, he was 3 rounds into the beers before the training began on friday night!  well either that or he was playing a version of the Musberger game that JK referred to during the Cavs game and was having to take a drink every time LeBron scored!  ;D :P :o

and yes HURF, I think the was HsCoach that had all that purple gear, lol, didn't he wear those boots at friday nigth's training session? ;D

In my never ending quest to separate opinion from fact:

Whitewater      Mount Union
Passing Efficency
33rd   139.95      1st   201.77
Rushing Offense
30th   216.69       9th   283.21
Passing Offense
110th   191.64       23rd   273.29
Total Offense
34th    408.24      1st   556.5
Rushing Defense
15th   84.21      1st   48.36
Passing Defense
92nd   179      8th   132.93
Pass Eff. Defense
10th    94.54      27th   98.64
Total Defense
14th   263.21      1st   181.29
Scoring Defense
3rd   12.21      1st    7.5
Tackles for loss
81st   6.43      18th   7.93

I for one am glad that if we were going to have a defensive let down it happened last Saturday. I feel, and the numbers support, that we tend to under estimate how good our defense is.

The differences in stats seem very similar to last year's teams as well.. ;)

From ESPN's TMQ:

QuoteDouble Bonus Obscure College Score: Mount Union 45, Wheaton of Illinois 24 (Division III semifinal). Mount Union's Nate Kmic became the all-time NCAA leading rusher at 7,986 career yards, surpassing -- surely you know! -- Danny Woodhead. Woodhead, who played for Chadron State, broke the record previously held by -- surely you know! -- R.J. Bowers. Woodhead went undrafted, had a tryout with the Jets and was waived. Bowers, who played for Grove City College, spent a year on the Steelers' practice squad, then carried seven times for Pittsburgh in a late-season game. Kmic has one more appearance, next weekend's Division III championship versus Wisconsin-Whitewater, in which to extend his record. The Division III championship is called -- surely you know! -- the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Not to be confused with Wheaton College of Massachusetts, Wheaton College of Illinois, located in Wheaton, Ill., held its annual Christmas Festival three weeks before Christmas.

Gotta love the arrogance of the major media outlets.  I find it amusing when these little weenies who probably weren't physically adept enough to make the high school jv chess team criticize DIII athletes.  Its a shame these journalists are given a national forum to ridicule the quaint atmosphere of small towns and colleges alike.  Sure the crowd Saturday may be 100,000 or so fewer than games at OSU, Michigan, or Tennessee, but these are true student athletes who play for true love of the game, school, and team.  There is something much more real about DIII sports that is lacking amid the glitz of big time university or pro sports.

Statistics would mean a whole lot more if there were ANY common opponents. Championships are won by quality teams peaking at the right time. Both teams will be confident, determined, and motivated. The game will be determined by line-play, execution, and turnovers. Hopefully, both teams will play well and let the chips fall where they may!

Does anyone else find it hysterical that HURF has that fancy flashing picture under his name (very impressive by the way) but struggles so mightily with the quoting?
