Have you ever seen so many empty seats at all these bowl games on TV. Someone is taking a real bath on some of these games. The economy is surely part of it. There are just too many meaningless bowl games. Thank God for real playoffs!

I haven't even really cared about the bowl games this season.  I have had a hard time keeping track of what is being played when.  Whatever happened to wall to wall bowl games on New Years day?  Greedy bastards.

As I watched Nebraska play in their bowl game I thought I must be the only guy in Ohio outside of bars watching it.

Formerd2db-Motor City Bowl- When Akron played, I rode the free bus with my free tickets, but had to buy my own popcorn. (I sneaked in my own drinks)

Hilarious!  Only at the Motor City Bowl! ;D ::)  I wonder now that the "Big 3" Automakers at Detroit in big trouble, if they will continue to and/or be able to contribute $ to that.  I guess (gut-feeling) is the bowl game committee will be taking a big hit on that (or at least to some degree) and thus Coach George Perles and his staff will be in for even more work attempting to get contributions.  On the other hand, the payout for the Motor City Bowl is only $750,000 per team being one of the "lesser bowls" so perhaps it might not be an impossible job to obtain funding to keep it going - hard-er in these tough economic times, but not impossible.

section13rf:

There have been many empty seats at the bowl games, however, if you look at the overall "listed" attendance for these, it does appear to be up from previous years.  Allowing for the "padding" of attendance which the bowl committees most likely do, the numbers are not bad and certainly well more than the "middle-high" +20,000 counts that some of the lesser bowls have had in recent years.  As I mentioned, the Cotton Bowl had +88,000 and that was a good thing for them since it has been a rather dismal bowl in the past decade.  Of course, having two regional and good teams in Mississippi and Texas Tech playing this year didn't hurt them at all.  In that regard, I think that these bowls, with the exception of the big ones i.e. BCS and others which will pick the top teams anyway, need to select more regional teams to help insure better attendance to at least break even.

Another example from this year concerning this topic is that one of the well-known and very credible longtime sportswriters in Lansing, MI who is (obviously) a Michigan State supporter noted that while the Capital 1 Bowl listed the attendance for the Georgia/MSU game at +59,000, it appeared to him that perhaps only 52,000 at best were there and that was being generous).

Yet, I do agree with you that there are really too many bowls.  People have been saying that for the past 10 years plus and pointing out the concerns about the cost in hosting those by the organizers, however, it seems that new bowls keep "popping up" each year and the NCAA keeps sanctioning them.  As I also mentioned, while it is not too enticing to want to see two 6-6 teams go at each other, I will just mention again IMO that with the parity in college football that now exists (for whatever and "all-ever" - did I just say that? is that a word? ;D ::) :P), most of the games this year have not been boring or sleepers - again an example is the KY-ECU game, the Vanderbilt game, etc.  Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what happens to some of these new bowls and pershaps some of the lesser ones in the next couple of years - I think we'll see some of them go defunct.  On the other hand, they've been saying that about the Independene Bowl in Shreveport, LA for years and that has managed to survive quite well - they had great attendance this year...and remember when that bowl was called the Poulen-WeedEater Independence Bowl? ;D ::)  I've went out and bought a Pulen-WeedEater during those times, but switched to a Black & Decker when PWE dropped their sponsorship of the bowl!!! :P ::) ;D :)

Sorry for the rambling guys, but just thought since we were on the subject of bowls, I'd throw in these comments.  Besides, it is essentially the "off-season" now - well at least for our DIII and soon to be for all of college football.  Later friends.

Let the market place decide the extent and nature of the bowls.

I had a young man watch the Rose Bowl with my family the other day. He was relating some stories from last year when he was in the contest. They gave his team the royal treatment. He knew other kids who played in lesser bowls where they literally gave away tickets at the last minute to try and fill the stands. He then picked up my laptop and showed me ticket sites where you could get DEEPLY discounted seats to more than a few Bowl Games this year. I guess there is a difference between attendance and PAID attendance. Interest probably is reflected most accurately in paid attendance. Im not sure what the "market value" would be. I guess if you can sell the TV time for your game then there is some market value involved. However diluted that market might be. TV ratings will probably show low interest in many of these lesser bowls. Maybe a better system to make matchups is what is really needed. I dunno....I love the game, but am bored with this bowl season.

RC's heading to the FIESTA BOWL!!!!

Craigslist is good for something.  I placed a "wanted" ad and got a couple discounted offers given my circumstances.  I ended up with two tickets for $80 total that one of my coaching colleagues is splitting with me.

I'm so excited to be cheering on the only other college team that matters outside of the OAC!!!

Watch what you like, ignore what you don't. If enough people agree with you, the bowls you ignore either will fix themselves or will disappear.

Way to go RC! I hope you see an OSU victory. Beware though.....last year there was an internet scam of fake tickets on some sites. I hope yours are the real thing.

All good comments, guys.

Frank, you are right.

rc:  Congratulations!  I hope you enjoy the game, the trip and entire experience.  Sounds fantastic.  Other than the Motor City Bowl and the Stagg Bowl (and NCAA Div III playoff games), I've never been to any of the major bowls.  My brother has and even when his team hasn't won, he and his boys enjoyed the experience and mini-vacation.  Anyway, again congrats and enjoy!

I was worried about it being a scam but the guy I got them from had me meet him at his work to pick up, gave me an Express Mail envelope that he got it from with his home address and the home address of the guy who originally bought them.

It looks like I bought tickets in a Texas section so I'm torn between trying to make an even trade with a scalper to get in an OSU friendly or neutral section or being the one guy sitting in a see of burnt orange wearing scarlet and gray.  I figure the latter option might come with some funny stories.

rc: be THAT guy. All of us in OAC land will love hearing the stories from the comfort of our computer screens! lol

Any word or progress on the Stagg DVD's? I am dying to watch the ESPN telecast.
