reality check

I think it all depends on the camp.  If the hitting is situational and done for the right reasons, then I say go for it.  If it's bull in the ring and toughman crap, then steer clear.  For non-skill guys there has to be some level of physicality to capture interest and develop skills IMO.  I would think that based on the camp's reputation, the contact will be for the right reasons.

When we took our kids to Arizona State's 7 on 7 camp last summer, there was a trenches camp for the linemen while the skinny kids were off playing with the footballs.  I would say it was "contact" although I didn't expect it to be.  There was some one on one pass rushing periods mixed with technique and a few team events.  I think the kids had a blast, it was monitored correctly by training staff and directors and a good experience for all.  For linemen at least, I think it's a blurry line between contact and non-contact.  Sometimes I laugh when coaches say they're going easy today in shorts and shoulder pads and then the kids do full-speed pass pro or run-blocking.  That's contact IMO and they'd be better off in full gear.  It's a tricky situation but I think if you can get answers about what the contact entails, you'll know what answer you'd be comfortable with.

In freshman football at Michigan during the 60s quarterbacks were pitted in intrasquad drills one-on-one against linemen. There was a skinny QB who consistently stalemated linemen. His name is Rick Volk, and he ended up playing safety 12 years for the Colts, receiving a host of honors along the way. He's my type of skill player.

Good story on Larry Kehres in Columbus Dispatch:

I read he won on Ric's site, then found this excellent story about the man.  For lots of reasons, he's truly a special human being.  (I know some of you are thinking...duh, thank you for stating the obvious, but I had to say it.)

For all of you that offered your opinion regarding full-contact summer football camps......I thank you!

I did some more research, and I am fairly comfortable how the O-D camps handle the camp, and what their emphasis is on during the week.  One of the cool aspects of these camps is that they are almost all on small college campuses (a lot of D-III schools).

Saints....the Cincy camp is at Thomas More.......would you recommend me taking Jr. there?  The Pittsburgh came is at Robert Morris, and the Chicago camp is in Naperville at NCC.  Oh...and I think the Rochester camp is at SJF.  We are contemplating one of those locations.

Speaking of basketball, this story is big news today.  I'm posting link for those who might have missed story of girls basketball team in Texas who ran up 100-0 score.  I heard the winners were still shooting 3-pointers after the half.

By the way, heard on "Mike and Mike" this morning that the coach had either been fired, or he resigned......either way, he's done.

Now there's a name from the past!  Being a Michigan fan, (and an old (er) one at that ;D), I remember Volk when I was a kid.  He was good QB for Michigan and he is just one is long line of good QB's at Michigan over the years (Bob Timberlake, Dick Vidmer, the late Don Morehouse, Larry Cipa, the late Dr. Tom Slade just to name a few that preceeded several of the familiar names that many of our fellow posters are familiar with in the last couple of decades. ;)).  In reality, players like Volk and the others, in the overall perspective, were just as good as the players of today - it's just that in the present era, kid's have become faster, quicker, etc..  Yet that is just how life and the world has progressed.  Anyway, thanks for bringing up a neat memory within the current discussion topic.

After standing in line for two hours to get my son's t-shirt signed at the Raider Recognition Rally, I can offically answer the question: "Does winning ever get old"

Apparently Not ;)

is the TMC Coaching Staff involved in this?  I'd say yes, bring him to Cincy....especially if Hilvert is going to be involved in the camp.

We all know that football is played at high level in the Cincinnati-area!!  There will be lots of kids at this.

I agree.  Great turnout last night.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Sometimes it seems as if LK is a little uneasy addressing the public. Last night I sensed that he was actually enjoying speaking to the faithful.  And why not? Let me win a national award like the D3 coach of the year and then be able to hand out 50 thousand dollars to my favorite charities and I will sprain my face grinning too! ;D His speach was longer than I anticipated...and ended abruptly too. When your done...your done, I guess! :D

Wasnt there some talk of a reunion of sorts for former championship players? What happened to that idea? I was hoping to see some of the former greats.

Poor Jim Tressel. 3rd place in the Ohio coaches poll for coach of the year. My, how the fates have turned. LK was the right choice for #1.  Just glad the rest of the Ohio college coaches saw it that way too. I wonder how Tressel would have placed up in Wisconsin? ;) ;D ::)

Is there a coach of the decade? Who might we nominate? :P

small college  rio grande ohio   best shooter ever   bevo Frances
My Dad used to tell me about seeing Bevo play for Rio Grande.  The college didn't even have a gym and played their games at local high schools when they weren't travelling to New York or other big city venues.  As great a player as he was his stoy is actually pretty sad. He put the college on the map then faded into obscurity and became a bit jaded and bitter about his college days.

Non-OAC, but football related (somewhat) question/discussion......

I am planning my 7th graders "football camp summer", and wanted to get everyone/anyone's opinion on allowing him to attend a full-contact summer football camp?

He says the usual camps are boring due to no hitting, and he is all psyched about attending a full-contact camp.  With all the dads, coaches, and former players out there that frequent this board, I thought I would be able to get some feedback as to your experiences, thoughts, etc...

As part of the consideration....he is a hitter!

Thanks for your input, and now back to the snow/freezing temperatures, and general crap that is Northeast Ohio in the winter.   :-\
Personally, I'd be a bit leary about a contact camp, but I also swore my son wouldn't start playing tackle football until he was in middle school . . . he was seven years old the first year he played in pads.  I realize non-contact drills are not as much fun as jacking someone up, but a good camp is going to focus on basic techniques and fundamental skills.  If the coaching is good your son will have fun, learn a lot about the game, and not even realize he's not in pads.

Hot off the presses!  I'm not sure why I received this info in an email today:  Muskingham College history book just released.

Warning: book cover photo shows cheerleaders spreading their legs over the football field.  It may have been considered provocative when it was taken. You can click on it to enlarge.  :o
