So I was checking out the schedules on D3Football.com and the schedule for Hardin Simmons has all five playoff dates (including the Stagg Bowl) listed as TBD.  No other team's schedule that I looked at show that?  Is Hardin Simmons being a bit presumptuous?  Does the staff at D3Football.com know something that we don't know?

kirasdad,

Maybe Hardin Simmons believes they will be that strong team from the South region like Trinity was once upon a time. That is the first time I have ever seen those dates listed as well.

Also, go to the CCIW page, there is an article written after NCCs scrimmage where they won by a ton.  Their coach has some lofty goals in mind from what he said in the article.  Some posters there are saying the level of competition was below ONU and maybe this gave them a false sense of where they stood going into Week 1 ... I think that is probably what you heard-- something along those lines.  To say their insiders or coaches think they were overrated and weren't surprised at the loss takes away from Dean Pauls bunch did last Saturday.  Give credit where credit is due.

My quote on the CCIW page was not at all meant to less what ONU accomplished on the field against NCC.  They absolutely took it to NCC.  My point was more meant to question the reasoning of the NCC staff to schedule a scrimmage against an average junior college.  How much is that really going to help you prepare for a game against a solid OAC program?

NCC is loaded with experienced juniors and seniors.  I would fully expect an experienced team of 21-22 year olds to whoop an average juco school of 18-19 years olds.  That is a HUGE difference in maturity (physically and emotionally).  It's no wonder NCC won the scimmage by a huge margin (the article claims 100 something to 7).  Is that really going to give the coaches a clear indication of where the team is in their preparation?  Is it possible it inflated the expectations of the team (make them overconfident)?  Sure...

Regardless of my speculation and opinion, it is what ONU did on the field and NCC didn't do that matters.  Anytime you don't control the line of scrimmage and can not convert 3 consecutive turnovers by the opponent on the road to a single point, your chances of winning are not good.

Just wanted to clarify that my intent was not to take anything away from ONU.  I should also point out that I'm no where near to an NCC insider, so it is complete speculation and opinion on my part.  NCC is the primary rival to the team I follow.  Going back to my cave...

Makes sense on the why, I did go to their offical site and saw the TBD dates listed there as well.  Thanks Pat, for clarifying.

Yesterday, I was told by good sources that North Central was overated by their own internal people and their performance against ONU did not come as a big surprize.

That said, the spread by HScoach  for ONU/MUC will be interesting!

I've been thinking about that one a lot this week.

Which brings me to my regularly scheduled PSA:

Seventies,

I had the opportunity this week to have a pre/dedication/construction
tour of the new wellness center and the modifications of Timken and
Peterson.

Those facilities will be outstanding for MUC and will complete with any others in the conference.

HScoach,

The spread for MUC/ONU will be interesting and given the outcome from game 1 for ONU. The question is: Would an MUC conference opponent  rather play the Raiders early in the season or later?

If I were coaching a contender, ONU, Cap, OTT, I'd rather see them sooner and get it over with given the history. However, others may sight improvement  over the course of the season and play the Raiders last (if they had any control of the schedule). Maybe Coach Paul would rather have the former since ONU won a 1st game that most thought they would not.

If I was an opposing coach, the preference of playing MUC early or late would depend on what type of team I had as well as what MUC had returning.

If I knew we were going to be good and a legit threat to make the playoffs, then I'd want to do it early in the season to have time to rebuild the team's confidence, to finish the season strong and to use the MUC game as a learning/teaching moment to get better throughout the season.  As well as it being motivation to win out to get another crack at MUC to prove the first game was simply a "bad game" and that we're much better than we showed.

If I hoped we were going to be competitive in the conference but were young, unproven or a program trying to climb above the mediocre level (ala Otterbein last year), then I'd want to face MUC as late in the season as possible.  I'd want as many wins under our belt as possible to get the kids believing in themselves before they have to face the machine.

For ONU this season, I'd rather play MUC early because of the question marks at QB and RB to start the season.  The deeper we get into the year the more consistent and explosive the offense is likely to become as the new starters get comfortable and LK gets a handle which kid can do what.

Never forget...

Can't believe today is the 8 year anniversary of what happened.  God bless all families and victims of 9/11 and God bless our servicemen out there protecting American interests at home and abroad.

I'll never forget learning at 6pm that day, through a phone call, that my brother had survived both towers collapsing.  I'm not much of a crier.... but there were definitely tears of joy after not knowing for the entire day because of a lack of cellphone coverage.

With two son's in the military (one in ROTC, the other an Army Ranger about to be deployed)....this is a poignant day to remember.  Some will remember "where they were" when Michael Jackson died....for me, it's Kennedy and 9/11.

God Bless America.
