desertraider,

how dare you be so arrogant?  what has your program ever accomplished? 10 national titles? fluke.  two longest winning streaks ever? who cares.  two decades of complete dominance? its 2009 now, come on.  why can't you just say that Mount will be for the fight of their lives against BW?  They have only had one losing season in what seems to be a hundred years.  The law of averages would make Mount fortunate to win on Saturday.  let's try to show a little humility towards our OAC opponent.  what's with the sense of entitlement man?

I tried to say that Mount 'may not pull this one out' - but I could not keep a straight face while saying it. Of course, truth be told - BW does play Mount tougher than any other OAC team historically. Mount can average 100 points a game but the BW score seems to hover around 21-7, 14-0, 28-14......

A slight sense of humor would help you quite a bit on our board.  We're not anywhere near the level of the E8 or LL boards, but we tend to be a lot more sarcastic and pointed than the WIAC board.

For the record on BW at Mount, they honestly have ZERO chance of winning.  Their program was once the standard bearer in the OAC but now they're barely an average league team.  And average conference foes have no chance to beat Mount.  Sorry if that sounds arrogant to you, but it is the truth.

Being a Whitewater fan, you have witnessed the recipe for beating Mount.  Run the ball effectively, play great attacking defense and don't turn the ball over.  BW doesn't have the ability to do any of those.

BW's leading running back is averaging a whopping 3.4 yards per carry.  They've given up 94 points in 3 games against teams with nowhere near the passing game that Mount brings and their QB has thrown as many INT's as he has TD's.

BP: I know the definition of arrogance - I used a working definition (thus no "quotation" marks). I will simply answer the last 2 questions - within 1 answer. MOUNT fans are entitled to believe that their team will win - regardless of opponent - every weekend in the regular season, the playoffs, and the Stagg. The team has earned the right to be the favorite virtually every given Saturday - and the fans by default have earned the right to celebrate that success and make sure all are aware. We are further entitled to believe that our team is the most dominant of all time - because they have earned that right on the field and the fans celebrate that every Saturday - or every day for the trully dedicated. A former Coach of mine used to say that it is not arrogance - when you back it up.
By the way I realize you were only hitting the bold points which is why my post only referenced the bold points.

While there has been no talk at all about the the BW/Mount game, what
might B-W try and do against the Raiders? With a potential 1-3 record after Saturday, can they even get to 5-5 with Cap, Ott  and ONU coming later?

This goes back to earlier posts concerning Mount's rivals. At one time
B-W not only was a rival, but had more wins against the Raiders!

If I am BW (and thank god I am not) I blitz early and often from the backside. Rocco is not as good under pressure and is not the most mobile so they may be able to get to him and rattle him. However, they need to double Cecil which leaves them single on the other WRs so they have to get Rocco quick. They also have to stop the running game to force Mount to pass so the blitz can be effective. How do they do that - no clue. Mounts line seems to open a hole at will and Panchik is running more like Kmic than the opponents would like. The problem for BW (colors aside) is that Mount normally uses 3 and 4 WR sets. If they commit 2 to Cecil and single on the others then they have used 4 or 5 DBs in coverage. Zone coverage won't work because someone is going to be 1 on 1 with Cecil and that is a mismatch. That limits them to 6 or 7 (or even 8 if they use Mounts famous 12 man defense - reference to Pam Ward at the Stagg) to stop the run and blitz. BWs options on D are somewhat limited. They could just pray - pray a lot! That might work.

desertraider,

Good analysis and given the coverage that B-W may want to throw
at the Raiders, it could be long and deep quick with Cecil to stretch
the defense and pound with the running game. Could be a long day for
B-W and unlike prior years the back-ups could see more PT this Saturday.

HScoach,

The Cap comment is just what I hope will happen as well, but not quite at the edge like the ONU first half. Cap is in a good position to be that other
OAC team and a challenge to the Raiders early will help both schools as the season moves along.

You guys are killing me!

THESE are the type of comments I have sarcastically responded to in the past and been lit up as if I've somehow insulted Mount Union's team or program. To honor an actually civil exchange on this board earlier in the week, I won't say a word. It's not the team that smacks of arrogance!  ;)

Would this be the civil exchange you refer too? You want to honor this?

"Congratulations to the Mount Union Purple Raiders for their victory this evening. Although I wasn't able to see the game, I have no doubt they played excellent football, were darn near perfectly coached, demonstrated unparalleled class, and provided all who attended a wonderful college football experience. Congratulations also to the players of Muskingum who undoubtedly played as hard as they could and got themselves a couple of touchdowns in the process. I'm sure it was a magical night in Alliance as the machine rolls on. In the meantime Muskingum undoubtedly improved measurably simply by playing against such outstanding execution and should benefit when they host Ohio Northern next weekend as long as they didn't suffer too many injuries from the hard hitting of the Purple Raiders. "

I hope you don't find me too arrogant to actually ask what you think of that post? Drips of the sarcasm you speak of and it's hard to take anything you say with sincerity after that. You still haven't seen some one about your problem I guess?

Like HS Coach says "Get a sense of humor. "

Have a great season? ;)
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

The actual definition of arrogance is: " offensive display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride." per dictionary.com

Well they must be super-arrogant then because Mount Union is known to put together many offensive, defensive and special teams displays of superiority on their way to victory.

What about MUC playing one of the Ohio D-II or FCS schools like Dayton?  ONU has played Dayton a couple times in the last ten years.  Wittenberg played Dayton even more recently.  I think it would be more a case of the bigger schools ducking MUC but I don't know for sure.   UWW has played D-II schools in their non-conference slate.  Or would playing an Ashland, Dayton, Tiffin, etc. just open up that old can of worms about MUC needing to move up permanently?  Nobody seems to say that about UWW and the other WIAC schools despite the fact that the public university system in the state of Wisconsin is set up much better to make the move.  Just a thought.  Curious what others might think.

I was looking for something totally unrelated, but I stumbled across this blog post from a reporter that covers Findlay regarding why Findlay doesn't play MUC or ONU.  The reasoning has been discussed on here already, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway.

I'll try to say this as polite as possible in an effort to not offend anyone or to come across as arrogant:

To all the esteemed competitors of the OAC Pick-Em's,

Hope this message finds you healthy and in good spirits.  It's my honor to once again remind you to post your weekly picks prior to Saturday's noon kick-off deadline.  Your timely posting of the picks would eliminate the unfortunate possibility that your scores could be better than the Grand Pooh-Bah and therefore invalidated due to being late.  Feel free however to post all losing picks past the deadline.  Those will still be honored.

Sincerely,

The Honorable Grand Pooh-Bah of the OAC Pick-Em's

HScoach,

Great Post and well said in the most polite way.

I did not realize that my post on the B-W game and the "on point"
analysis by desertraider would cause some to think we Raider alums
and supporters are arrogant. I think there is a difference between proven confidence and arrogance.

Dr. A, RC and colleagues:

This topic has been discussed on several occasions in recent years here on this board as well as the other boards.  I don't think it opens up "the can of worms" with regard to that old debate about MUC moving up to DII that some, albeit a few, people have seemed to support, while the majority of MUC alumni, fans, supporters, etc. do not favor, and for good reasons.  As has been well pointed out by MUC posters here, MUC simply chooses not to play non-conference games against DII or FCS schools (formerly D-IAA) and there is nothing wrong with that.  All that being said, on the other hand, other Div III schools have chosen to play those type of schools for an occasional non-conference game and that is fine as well.  In past years, Alma has played such schools as DII Mich Tech, Ferris State, Northwood, Drake; way back in my day we (Hope) played Univ of Indianapolis, Valpo; Olivet has played Dayton, Albion has played Bulter (although the latter has not been very good in recent years, yet is apparently aspiring to elevate their program to a higher FCS level) just to name a few in our conference.

It has also been discussed the relative strengths of the D-IAA non-scholarship schools as being compared to better DIII teams, although I will say that on some occasions in recent years, Dayton beat Yale and San Diego (with Harbaugh as coach) beat some upper caliber teams.  One other aspect that is not currently a factor was the SOS before the AQ's were instituted in Div III for the playoffs.  Devoting one of your non-conference games to a non-DIII opponent (such as a DII or D-IAA) while did not hurt if you lost, didn't help you in the long run with regards to potentially being selected if your team was "on the bubble".  At any rate, getting back to the discussion topic regarding MUC, again, I think that MUC supporters have expressed the reasoning why quite well and no problem with that - it is just what MUC desires to do.  Yet, IMO, I see nothing wrong with it if a school chooses to play an "upper level" team - I personally think it is a great experience for the players.  Thanks for the good discussion.

Thanks for the explanation. I can't say I disagree with most of your logic. I find some of the phrasing of some posts arrogant. Not evil.  i don't hate the posts or the poster. I even understand it to a degree. Believe me, there are MUC posters that would agree that some of the posts are arrogant. And there are posts by UWW posters that smack of arrogance. No argument there. I actually think it's funny, not a big deal. Not as funny as the fact that MUC has over 200 players on their roster, but funny nonetheless.   8)

Wow Suit, still stuck on the "fortunate" word huh?  :D

So your explanation is slightly different than dessert. Your position (If I am reading through the sarcasm correctly) is that you all have a RIGHT to be arrogant. So in essence, you are entitled to be arrogant, because of Mount Union's success. Until President Obama is able to fully implement his plan, I'm not sure who is in charge of bestowing arrogance entitlements. But he will probably be in control of that too. I just thought it might be fun for a follower of one of the few teams not afraid of Mount to challenge it a little bit!

Ryan Tipps,
Thanks for the info on the UAA and NCAC agreement. I think a similar agreement with the OAC could benefit the NCAC. This would re-new old rivalries, make travel easier, and upgrade the competition for the NCAC teams.
