Small but Slow

Its embarrassing that one or more so-called fans behave that way, but its not representative of typical Mount fans. Some people feel the need to draw negative attention to themselves, never thinking how their behavior represents the team or school.  We have fans in my son's pee wee football league who behave in much the same manner described. Its sad that this behavior is tolerated, even sadder that some encourage it.  Most OAC and DIII followers realize these folks are the exception and not typical of Mount fans.  Hopefully this loser's behavior will be admonished and not repeated.

Checking in before checking out for the night.  Skunk, Jr. and I were at CAP today.  What a great day for football!  Sun came out, got fairly warm, large crowd, and a very exciting game.

Rocco - stares down ONE receiver, and if he isn't open there is trouble.  HOWEVER......he really stepped up at the end of the first half, and in the 4th quarter to show he can definitely perform under pressure.  GREAT job.....he started throwing to someone else other than Cecil, which was a very good thing.

Assman - best QB in the OAC.  Made so many plays in this game.  Unfortunate he had the fumble (actually the center's fault who quick snapped two plays in a row), but I was amazed at how he read the defense for the open man.  This kid is TOUGH!

CAP Punter - holy CRAP!  Those punts could bring rain.  That kid could BOOM it.

Double checkeroo to what HSCoach said about Stewart.  He was causing wind with all his drop his head WHIFFS on tackles.  Geesh!

Lutz - STUD    Kershaw - not so much

A win is a win is a win.......and CAP is very good....but Mount must get much better if they are going to make a Stagg run.

Oh...one more thing.  I am very happy for Rocco.  He earned it.  However, if he wouldn't have made plays at the end of the game, would anyone want to bet who would have been the QB next week?

JK...sorry we missed you.  We got into the stadium right at kick-off, and we went down to the end zone.  Sat by the Petru clan.  Great people.......

JK,
I hope they either caught the jerk you are describing or he's still running through Ironton somewhere by now. Surely we don't need him in our fan base, nor does any anyone else. If his wife was with him, maybe she'll be glad to serve him papers when he makes it back to the hole from which he crawled out of.
Great to meet you before the start of the game in the concession line, and let me say again thank you for your service in protecting our freedoms and way of life. Has been a while since i had seen you back nearly 5-6 years maybe more when you were back in Alliance for a game. Thought the fly by with the Huey at the start of the game was quite inspiring and brings alot more in perspective that our troops are still at war while we have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful saturday afternoon watching a sporting event simulating a battle in itself!
Today was truly a classic heavyweight fight, with both teams going toe to toe and trying to deliver a knockout punch. Assman and Rocco both gained a ton of respect from both teams today in taking their teams through some unfamiliar situations.
As HsCoach and a few others indicated, Mount's D tended to play way too soft on coverage and not sure why accept for just wanting to keep the Cap receivers in front of them. Likewise Mount seemed to totally abandon any blitz packages while only trying to get backdoor pressure via the DE's. Too many 3rd down conversions for Cap that probably shouldnt have been made had Mount stunted and used some blitz packages. But give Assman all the credit, he stayed mobile and even at times held into the pocket to make some terrific pass plays! Two in particular that he had, either going down or in the grasp and yet made the delivery for a completion! (you sure the wasn't Rocky?, lol)
Rocco matured more today from this game than at any point taking snaps in his career. He kept his poise, and delivered some terrific passes. One thing he needs is to make reads quicker, and use the flats more. It was nice that Kyle Miller got utilized a bit more as well, one helluva target and should be getting 4-6 tosses a game IMO.  Cap showed why they are 2nd OAC in run D, in doing an excellent job at closing gaps quick and making good tackles. However, the Mount run game has to step up! Not sure whats happen with Lemmon or Harris, but there needs to be someone to step in, step up and step through in the rushing attack.
Otherwise, a great game and should be a big learning experience for both teams!

I also blame the close game on the black pants and the upcoming name change ;)

"Soft" Defensive game plan yesterday reminds me of the Stagg Bowl last year.  Maybe that is the Bend but don't Break D saved for games where the opponent matches up better (physically & speed) with MUC???

Did you see what Coppage did for UWW yesterday?  MUC has a long way to go if they want to defend the Championship in December.

Watched the game on my laptop,  an excellent example of good college football.  Clean, exciting, thrills and chills but most of all good sportsmanship as evident by end of game prayer at mid field.  VK needs to work on stopping the slant across the middle, as Marty hit this one all day.   Rocco came thru when he needed to  and  the defense  stepped up at the end.  I have been to Cap home games as my son is a grad.  I no longer wear Mt. stuff,  I wear my Cap  stuff.   I get better seats and am treated much better by the fan base.  I have often wondered why Mt. fans are  not looked upon with fondness at Cap home games.  Crude behaviors are unacceptable  in any part of our society.  Good game I wish I could have gone.   Next up, on to the BERG.

In regards to the team gathering at midfield............both schools have very strong FCA groups (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).  Judd Lutz is the "leader" of the MUC group.  Prior to the game, both groups decided that it would be a good thing to do after the game.  I was very impressed with the number of players (and coaches) who participated.  The neat part about it, is that it is student-led.  After banging heads in a highly-competitive contest, these young men were able to join and give thanks for the opportunity to be a part of this great game.....maybe the MUC supporter who was chased from the game needs to participate at some time in the future?? ;)

Next up, on to the BERG.

I'm on to the Berg for an admissions Open House in the morning with my daughter. Looking forward to it only because I'm borrowing my father-in-laws BMW. Stay clear of Route 224 west of Lodi tomorrow. Zoom, zoom, zoom   8) (I know that's the wrong car company)

Heidelberg/Bethany/Mount Union, they all mean four years of asking "Do you want fries with that?" (Then I go bankrupt)

I know that HSCoach's tag line of being offended by easily offended people is, in part, a jab at comments that I made last year--but I really don't think that my personal offense at the boorish behavior of any fans, and especially Mount fans falls into the category of being easily offended--

Okay, I'll get off my soap box now--but these a$$hole$ really get my hackles up.

Peace.  Out.

Theaprof,

I'm squarely with you.  There is no reason to be a complete A$$.

Sounds like something Hammer and His Merry Band of Idiots would have done 10 years ago.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Great points by all. I do not understand the major advantages of a soft cover defense other keeping the receivers in front of you.

Mount's defense up until the Cap game was very quick with tons of pressure on the QBs. Why change it for this game? What it did was allow Cap to control the ball way too long. I think the defensive coaches game
plan was not a good one from what I have read, but I was not at the
game or heard the telecast.  However, Assman did a good job and he took what the defense gave him, and the Raiders were not their normal defense
IMHO.

Have you also seen what North Central has been doing in the CCIW?  They put up 83 points yesterday and have averaged 66 points a game over the past four.  Most impressively, they beat Milikin 58-0 last weekend.  Milikin had come into the game with the 8th ranked rushing defense (allowing 43.67 yards/game), and North Central put up nearly 200 yards on the ground and Fanthorpe threw six touchdown passes.  Milikin beat previously undefeated #24 Illinois Wesleyan yesterday.  North Central looks like a completely different and a much better team since they played ONU in the first game of the season.

Putting up 83 points on North Park is not an accomplishment.

No mention of the Otterbein-BW game? Granted, Mount-Capital was a classic, but having been in attendance for the former, it was surprisingly competitive and entertaining given the records. Back and forth in the first half, and a defensive battle in the second. BW almost put a last minute drive together, but Ott helf on a 4th and 1 late.

I read that Mount Union College/University will add engineering in the fall of 2010, the implication being that this was one of the factors behind the name change.  Being from NE Ohio, I can only guess what might have been if, in the late 1970s, there had been a Mount Union University with engineering available as an option for me, instead of my going elsewhere to study in that area.  Would have been good now to say I went there.

It's still near my hometown, so GO RAIDERS !!!

Same for me too.  I ended up at Akron U because MUC didn't have an engineering program.

Only real football playing + engineering option for me was ONU.  But I grew up in a town of barely a 100 people (Paris, OH) and didn't want to go to college in one too.

How ironic, my undergraduate school was Akron :)!  I think it's named The University of Akron.

Ada, OH, home of ONU, is a bit mroe than 100 people; but yes, rather far from any large metropolitan area.
