One other thing to keep in mind w/ BW, as well as JCU, is the creation of 2 new DII football programs in the Cleveland area in the last couple years (Notre Dame and Lake Erie).  Throw in Case's recent success coupled with their beautiful new facilities and the recruiting picture right now is more competitive than ever up there.  Not an excuse, just food for thought.

While the other colleges draw from the greater Cleveland area players (Seventies's post), all the more reason to have a good recruiting marketing plan to offset some of the loss of talented potential players.

As mentioned before, B-W needs to develop strategic approaches from a great program and try to learn from it. Mount's recruits come from several states with about 55-60% from Ohio. B-W has to change not only their approach but image. While B-W does not have the national reputation, they have to start somewhere. A good measure of improvement is Heidelberg.

Small but Slow

It's difficult to imagine B-W's decline to its present also-ran status in the OAC.  At one time B-W had the best facilities and tradition in the conference.  In the past 15 years they have been surpassed not only by Mount Union but several other programs as well.  To regain their upper tier status the B-W adminstration will need to create some sort of buzz (fitting for Yellow Jackets) around the program to bring in athletes who are difference makers. MUC brings in players from all over the nation.  Many don't pan out, but their presence creates a competitive environment that attracts the best home grown talent.  It seems B-W has rested on its laurels in creating competition for each position by not aggressively recruiting outside the greater Cleveland area.

Mt Union is bad for division 3 football. Period. End of Story.

70sR, I forgot to mention this before when you brought it up, but if Mount Union was taking on Akron in a few sports in the 1960s, it shouldn't be that surprising.  At the time, both schools would have been in the NCAA's "College Division."  Akron didn't join Division I until the 1980s.  After the College Division split into Division II and Division III, UA went into DII for a few years.

My personal congratulations to Coach Hallett and Heidelberg Students Princes for a wild win over BW. You don't have great facilties or a rich institution, so the hard work really shows. Have fun in Wilmington. Hoping you can pull out a 500 season.

If I'm gonna be a Berg parent, I at least want to see some good football over the next four years  ;)

reality check

Hell you could be a Wilma parent and see good football at least a couple times a year (when MUC, CAP, ONU or OTT visit.)

Seventies,

B-W needs a Mount guy to coach, like Coaches Paul, Hallett, Siriani, Raeburn ( forgive the spelling). That gruop has done very well!

Who is waiting in the wings?

i think it would be very interesting for BW to hire Sirianni (if he would go to BW)...His offensive philosophy could make for excitement and  bring back the special feelings of the BW MUC rivalry

raiderpa

I did some inquiries about JCU and the NCAC....apparently JCU does lack a couple key requirements for consideration  for the NCAC and DePauw seems the lock.   Further, the feeling around the conference is that the OAC has made some changes that were concessions to JCU (ability to visit to the local Catholic high schools to contact athletes) and JCU appears to be content for now...
