just wondering, are CarrollStreaks and BleedPurple ever online at the same time?

Let's ask Pat to check the ISPs.  And how about if you're wrong in your silly insinuation, you have to place a JCU logo in your avatar for a month.

I didnt make any bets with the Marietta fans or the Wilmington fans, so I doubt I will take that one.  I wouldn't try to stir anything up when my team is horrible.   JCU was this close to being Muskingum this year....keep up the good work.   But enjoy the basketball season, you got us there

It's a shame the rumor about JCU to the NCAC has lost some steam because I truly think you'd fit in given your general attitude towards the world.

I'm not addressing the rest of your post, because that's between you and CarrollStreaks.

I have spent a few years on the OAC, NCAC, and UAA forums, and the only board where I've seen any putting down of other conferences and teams lately is this one.  You guys put down the NCAC constantly, and then you have the nerve to throw a jab at them insinuating that they are the ones with an attitude problem?

This little fight between you and Streaks is really bringing out the worst in both of you.

That's a bit harsh (for Muskingum)...

The Muskies went 4-6 with a head to head win over John Carroll.  They finished 4-5 in the OAC with a non-conf loss.

John Carroll went 3-7 with a head to head loss to Muskingum.  They finished 3-6 in the OAC with a non-conf loss.

Did you mean "JCU was this close to beating Muskingum?  So close...

OAC fans, name all the programs in our conference that finished 3-7 this year.  Scary.

If you've been around as long as I have in these forums, you'd know that we're not making up the NCAC attitude thing.  It hasn't been a problem in recent years but there have been occasions where NCAC posters (probably long gone by now) have played the academic card and gone so far as to use the cliche "Your schools kids will be working for my school's kids someday" lines.  And I think most of the long-time NCAC posters don't fall into this category.  Every school and every conference has their idiots.  We just recently got a new one.

Is their arrogance here?  YES.  MUC has arrogant fans for what they do on the field.  Have we seen arrogance from NCAC fans?  Certainly not for head to head football prowess but for academics, yes.  I apologize if you're offended but just because it's an old issue doesn't mean it never happened.  Sorry to ruffle your feathers.

OK, I wasn't around these boards when this happened, so I can't vouch for what was or was not said back then.  I am just stating my point of view that as of right now, this board seems to be the one slinging all the arrows.  Even if it is in retaliation for things said long ago, it doesn't make it any more right.

OK, I know I have only posted once in what seems like a very long time, but can one of my old friends help me???

Who does my alma mater play in the first round of the playoffs?  I can not find it anywhere.

Umm... since when is it "Pat's bracket"?   :-\

4u, recall that it is the NCAA (specifically the committee) that decides the final playoff participants.  I can see being disappointed in your team not being in the field, but be more informed so as not to place "blame" in the wrong location.

Jeff,

I don't know if you know the history of the NCAC, but perhaps a re-telling here would be appropriate.

It was basically an ideological debate over the role of sports that led to the NCAC's creation and it was at the great expense of the OAC...

All of the NCAC's Ohio schools (which is the largest part of that conference) at one time were a part of the OAC.  In fact, Wittenberg used to be the OAC's powerhouse program and the OAC's de facto MVP award until 2007, the Mike Gregory Award, was named after a Denison player.

In 1983, the NCAC was formed when OWU, Wooster, Denison, Kenyon, and Oberlin joined with Case (who was independent, but also a former OAC member), Allegheny and Earlham to form a new conference.  Witt left the OAC to join the NCAC in 1988.  Case left the NCAC and Hiram left the OAC to replace them in 2000.  Wabash joined when the old Indiana COnference disbanded in the 90's to give them their current 10 schools.

Much of the reason for those schools leaving had to do with their disagreement on the role of Athletics within a small/ liberal arts College/ University's mission and the "emphasis" placed on sports by the OAC and some of the Schools they were competing with in it (basically, in their opinion, too much).  So, they left to form their own conference, with more of an "Academic Focus."  In fact, here is a quote directly from their own website:

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

Please note the parts in bold.  It can be argued that there are some OAC schools that are as selective or more selective than some of the NCAC schools, and we feel no such need to claim our schools are "Academically selective," particularly when it comes to describing our sports teams and our conference.  Additionally, Marietta has a Phi Beta Kappa Chapter...so what?  I think several other OAC schools meet the qualifications for a chapter but simply are not interested in forming one.

So, yes, we sling some arrows at the NCAC.  Mostly it is all in good fun, as we accuse them of being "Elitist" and of "taking their ball and going home," so to speak, by forming their own conference because they thought other schools placed "too much emphasis" on sports over education... so much so that they had to include it in their conference's mission statement.

There were some posters who played and occasionally still play the "academic card" and that usually brings the OAC-NCAC debate to the fore.  Sometimes it is competition related as we don't understand why, for the most part, NCAC schools won't schedule OAC schools for OOC games despite their general proximity to one another (ala MUC-COW).  IN fact, some in OAC circles view the UAA and NCAC scheduling "arrangement" as simply another NCAC "put down" of the OAC, an agreement to play teams who share their academic beliefs and not us heathens in the OAC who value winning meaningless sports contests.  In response we usually accuse them of taking the easy road instead of stepping up and doing what was necessary to compete.

So, perhaps that helps explain our barbs at the NCAC folks?

Don Shula was on PHX Sports Radio this morning.  He didn't get asked anything about his upbringing or college days but he was on to promote the opening of his 33rd restaurant at one of the local casinos.  As you could imagine, he's a great interview.

They played a commercial during one of the breaks advertising Don Shula's Steakhouse in which everything was normal, mundane and exactly what you'd expect from a relatively conservative and formal dining establishment.  Then they said, "The extensive menu is brought to each diner on a football that has been hand-painted on by Don Shula himself."  I thought I heard it wrong until I listened in on a second playing of the commercial during the next break.  Funny stuff.

My point exactly!  Pat's bracket is broken.  This means there must be an official one out there which is correct.  Thanks for jumping all over me, though.  It's know-it-alls like you who greatly decreased my interest in posting lately.

Type away so you can read your fine posts over and over and over...
