I was told by a mount student yesterday that Cecil announced on his facebook page that he was coming back, said he was tired of answering the question so wanted to put it to rest...

That is great news!!

Here another question to think about in the coming months, since there will be alot of discussion on these boards on this topic.

What team is ranked No. 1 for the preseason for 2010, will it be UWW or Mount Union?

- things to consider, Cecil returns for Mount, and  Mount will have a  potential QB who learned the system as a back-up.

- UWW needs to replace their QB and Coppage returns, the UWW defense
has many holes to fill like the Raiders do as well

things to add/correct to the UWW notes:

- UWW has a potential QB who learned their system as a back-up, as well.

- there's a possibility UWW might also have a head coach to replace, may know tomorrow... READ HERE

Mount will be #1...UWW will be #2...same old, same old. It doesn't matter which team lost the most (i.e. last season Mount lost the two best players in the nation and was still was preason #1), and it doesn't matter who won the national title the previous season (i.e. the begining of the 2008 season after UWW won it in 2007).

02 Warhawk,

Agree!

Going into 2009, many here at the OAC thought UWW should be preseason
#1, since they had more starters returning and Mount lost Micheli and Kmic.

Others thought that if you win the National Title, then you are #1 until another team beats you.

In 2010, it is similiar but not quite that same, with two of the top players Shorts, Coppage returning and holes to fill on both sides.

Since UWW won the title they are #1 until another team beats them.

A key for Mount is how many more eligible players return, tight end
a top offensive and defensive lineman.

So again like 2009, it is a toss-up!!

If I had a vote, I would be on the side of what the program is returning, rather than what they accomplished in the previous season. Where a school finished in the previous season shouldn't matter where they are ranked to start the next season, IMO.

The fact the Whitewater lost it's QB, their All-american kicker and half its defense...I would think MUC would get the #1 rank, especially if they are getting the best DIII football player in the country back.

Here is a broader question/discussion to ponder:

How many of these teams will challenge UWW and Mount Union in 2010
and what do they bring back to do it?

Just a few come to mind:

Wittenberg
Ohio Northern
Illinois Wes.
North Central
Wabash
Wesley
Mary Hardin Baylor
Linfield
St. Johns
St. Thomas
Monmouth
Thomas Moore
Delaware Valley
Johns Hopkins

There are probably other programs ( no offense to anyone else) that can
be challengers.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Fixed for you.  I'll comment on TMC.  They have some big shoes to fill but have very good, young talent coming back and coming in from the GCL through recruiting.  The Saints have a promotion going with players from GCL schools getting money back to attend TMC, so you're seeing an influx of kids from Moeller, Elder and LaSalle... in addition to beating the p!ss out of MSJ the last two years, TMC has Cincy on lockdown at the D3 level.

BUT, they lose their 4 year starting QB, their 4 year starting TB (both were the heart of the offense).  On defense they lose their All American LB and also their 3rd leading tackler (at another LB spot).   But return All American Safety (as a freshman) Zach Autenreib.

At the end of the season in the playoffs.... Freshman or Sophomores made up 15 of their 22 guys on the 2-deep for Defense.  They have a couple key guys to replace.

I think they'll be favorites to win the PAC again in 2010.... because I hear they've found a legit QB to step into the dual threat role... in the spread option offense.  They have enough talent around him on offense to carry the team during the 1st couple weeks.  With JCU off the schedule, I'm not sure who they are going to play in Week 1.  I wish it were Mount so the program could experience that.... and strive to it in the years to come.

do the preseason rankings really matter?  With a playoff system, i think most would agree that the top 25 really means nothing at the end of the day.

The top 25 doesn't even matter when picking teams for the playoffs either. it's all based on winning your conference and regional rankings...top 25 is almost irrelavant. It just gives posters something to debate on  ;)

TooForRaider

Looks like WWW is safe.

Top 25 is irrelevant, but I do enjoy the debates on here about it.

opps...maybe i'm just going out on a limb

Mr. Ypsi

Pat, technically we might be looking at 'Purple Bowl' VII - both Linfield and UMHB (2004) are also purple! :D

Since they seem two of the most likely to ever de-throne the current purple, we may someday be looking at 'Puple Bowl XVI'! :P

So, what effect on 18-19-20 year old kids does it have to come back from winning a National Championship and find out your coach is already looking out for himself and looking to move up out Whitewater. I remember something similar in high school and it was a real kick in the nads. I never respected that coach again
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

BashDad

Whatever. Was your coach 42-3 with two national championships in three years?

Anyway, he's staying: http://www.wkowtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11775364
