So, what effect on 18-19-20 year old kids does it have to come back from winning a National Championship and find out your coach is already looking out for himself and looking to move up out Whitewater. I remember something similar in high school and it was a real kick in the nads. I never respected that coach again

Mitchell named GVSU coach. When a higher-profile job like Grand Valley opens up, I can't fault a coach from showing interest. Most UWW fans and his players know the score (even when an outsider doesn't)...Leipold is going to get interest because of his record.  Because of that success, he'll get interviews...we may never know how many other DIII coaches who showed an interest in GVSU got none in return. What are his players going to think? Only time will tell what effect it will have seventies - probably none, life goes on.

Just found this board.  I've always wondered if there are very many "Alliance" people not affiliated with Mount that go to Mount games.  I grew up in Alliance in the 60's and used to go in free at half time (they opened the gates), but the crowds were so small then that I'm sure it was mostly sudents, alumni and parents that attended.  Back then, The Alliance HS JV games at Rockhill may have outdrawn Mount.  I didn't know anybody else that went to Mount games and I only went to half of the games I did go to.  My mother never liked Mount back then ("a bunch of spoiled rich kids"), but when they went started winning and going to the to the Stagg Bowl, she closely followed them and even listened to their playoff games on the radio.  I have a brother who lives 20 miles away in Perry, is a huge football fan, follows Mount in the newspaper, never misses the Stagg Bowl telecast, but has never been to a Mount game in Alliance.  I moved away in 1972 (now live in Fairfax, VA) and have been to two playoff games (in Dayton in 86 or 87) and to the Stagg bowl in 2000.  To show how things have changed, I remember Mount fans telling inquisitive Dayton fans exactly where Mount was located.  One final question:  With Mount expanding and Alliance(the city and the high school's football program) shrinking, do more Alliance (including Mount) people now think of Larry Kehres and not Len Dawson as the best known Alliance football personality?

Whatever. Was your coach 42-3 with two national championships in three years?

Anyway, he's staying: http://www.wkowtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11775364

No, our coach is 285-21-3 with 10 national championships.

Your coach lost 3 games in three years, how sad for you.

Alliance72, given that those of us who remember Lenny Dawson are in our sixties means his memory is fading some. Doesn't mean I don't still have a signed copy of "Len Dawson -Pressure Quarterback" or that my memories of sharing a sodie pop or two with Lenny's dad  at Jokie's Bar have faded.

Now that the GVSU HC vacancy has been filled by an internal candidate,
the UWW program will have Coach Leipold back again for 2010. I agree with Seventies that if your head coach seeks other opportunities it does impact the players to some degree.

College age players 18-21 year olds are savy enough to know that a successful program warrants interest from other schools that is one thing, but when your coach seeks to be considered by other schools, he is in fact placing his goals 1st. That is not a negative just a fact.

Everyone and every program should have goals and as long as Coach Leipold is at UWW, he will be successful, and other schools will come after him whether he seeks it or not. Based upon his record and his own long term goals, I would be surprized if he remains at UWW as long as his predecessor.

In the meantime UWW and D3 football are fortunate to have him!

We can assume all we want, but only time will tell if this will have any affect on the team.

If your best friend steals your girl friend, but she dumps him, your still friends, life goes on? YOU win a national championship and your coach seeks to move up based on your achievements. Ya, lets wait and see how that plays out in recruiting.

I just view looking for a new job after barely three years as pretty shallow. (But I have spent a weekend in Whitewater, WI and some friends on the University of Nebraska-Omaha staff who were less than fond of him.)

Just wasn't just any old "new job."  This was a very desireable new job with one of the best DII programs in the nation.  Jobs like this don't become available every year.  Who knows how long it might be before another opportunity like this came up.  Liepold is a young coach who's career is in it's early stages.  You strike when the iron is hot and the opportunity presents itself.

That said I'm glad he'll be still be with us and from what I've heard recruiting is going along quite well.

Alot of talent is in place right now for the next few years. We won't find out if recruiting will suffer b/c of this for another 2-3 years from now.

Time heals all (if any healing needs to be done)...

Seventies.......sigh....what are we going to do with you.   :o

IF the right job would have come calling for LK, don't think for a minute he wouldn't have taken it.  He was just pretty picky about what job would/could take him away from Mount.

I think part of any profession is trying to always better yourself (financially/professionally).  Whether that means promotions or raises at your current employer, or moving on to greener pastures.

If Harbaugh gets another job, I wonder if LK would take the Stanford job if offered?   ;D  It fits his criteria for coaching......smart kids..can run his offense......great college.......kids that graduate.

LK would have gone to Princeton. After that I think he dug in his heals. Most big schools want a Doctorate degree, at least the ones I think would attract him. After seeing him and Mrs LK at the womens basketball game Saturday, I think they are here to stay. Of course I've been wrong once before, me and The Fonz.

But

Alas, poor Yorick, they whack my karma

If I want to talk crap about Lancey boy on the OAC board, they are powerless to do me harm. (Stolen for Absence of Malice). Out of order? Out of order? The whole damn boards out of order ;D

Coach Kehres would/could have left long ago, but he made the decision for the best interest of his family and his career.

In the meantime he has done what no other college coach has done. There
are many coaches with great records, but Coach Kehres has set the bar extremely high and I for one am glad he is still here.

Mount Union still has more National titles to win, so let's start again for
2010! :)

Don't give yourself too much credit, seventies.  Pretty sure you aren't having nearly the fun we are. And you really aren't angering anyone that I've noticed, either.

Actually it's kind of fun to see a Mount fan grasping at straws. Maybe this will affect UW-W. Maybe that will affect UW-W. Don't you long for the days when Mount just took care of business and it carried them to a national championship?  Now you need UW-W to be negatively affected by a phantom problem to build confidence. Oh, for the good old days, eh seventies?  ;D
