In 2006, Mount Union beat Fisher 26-14 in Alliance, Ohio, but Stepnick and his teammates held Garcon to one catch for three yards. The Purple Raiders won the Division III national championship the following week.

Didn't Garcon have a broken hand in 2006 and because of that Kehres just kept feeding the ball to Kmic?

Micheli and Jorris only attempted 14 passes that day.  Here was Kmic's stat line:

Rushing         No Gain Loss  Net TD Lg  Avg
--------------------------------------------
Nate Kmic       42  371    0  371  3 64  8.8

I think that was more of a game plan to run the ball with Kmic, rather that Fisher "holding" Garcon to only one catch.

"I was watching the game from a booth at the stadium," Stepnick recalled Monday. "Each time Garcon scored, he gave the exact stupid pose he used after Sunday's touchdown — his hands on his hips like Superman."
.

"Stupid"? ? ?  Besides beside showcasing your racist side Officer Stepnick, which one of you guys was driving a cop car and which one setting an NFL AFC playoff game record with 11 receptions. Still just a little bitter aren't we?

Mount threw only 14 passes in the game in question, 5 to Justin Wray, two to Antonnucci, one to Garcon the other six were incomplete. Mount didn't throw because Kmic was getting 8.8 yards per carry. Why bother.  Pierre Garcon was not even listed as a starter due to injuries. So I guess Stepnick really kicked his ass, so much he only came off the bench a couple of times and ran back in fear. (:>)

Pierre was hot dogging in the endzone,  and you Officer Stepnick were not.

Some times I wonder if you read different posts and articles from everyone else.  Where did Stepnick sound like a racist???  That's way overboard no matter how purple your glasses are.  It's clear he's not a big fan of Garcon but that sounds more like a guy who lost three games to Pierre's team as opposed to racial  bias.  I'm fairly disappointed you took it to that level to be honest.

My only issue with the slightly SJF-biased article is the simple fact that he didn't pose like Superman.  He used his thumb to point to the name on the back of his jersey first and then he kind of soaked in the moment.  For that I can't blame Garcon one bit.  I'd probably think his pose was pretty annoying too if I saw him score 7 touchdowns on my squad in three contests.

Sorry but the word stupid was totally inappropriate, and unnecessary. And I felt that the majority of the remarks directed towards Pierre over the years about his end zone posing were nothing short of racist.  Did he suddenly become the only guy in the NFL with an endzone routine. Why even mention it, why call it stupid. Why is it such a big deal to him?

BTW The remark smacks of an underlying anger that has a name

I agree about the post not being racist, but I understand what seventies is reacting to.  We've read a lot of comments over the years from posters who didn't understand attitude and ego coming from some black athletes.  Where Pierre is concerned, they misunderstand him.  Showing pride and celebrating accomplishments in the end zone isn't much tolerated at the college level.
Pierre was meant for the bigger stage in the NFL.  Sure, he's one lucky guy to be part of an organization like the Colts and catching balls from Peyton Manning, but he's worked hard and deserves to celebrate his successes.  I wish him all the luck in the world.  He's a great kid.  8-)

We watched a local Indy TV interview of Pierre last week on the Internet and he was wearing a Raiders hoodie.  It was grey and all it said was "Raiders" in Mount's script.  I thought some people will see that and think it's the Oakland Raiders!

His Indy Jersey or his Mount Jersey?  Mount doesn't have names on the back of their jerseys.

I also didn't take it as a racisit comment.  I do also get tired of the Posing/Celebrations.  Spike the ball if you wish, hug your teammates, do a chest bump but some of it goes over the top and seems selfish to me.

I prefer the Walter Payton/Emmit Smith way of "Act like you have been there before".

Small but Slow

I don't understand the attraction of contrived touchdown celebrations and sack dances, but those are elements that attract many fans who have made pro football the #1 spectator sport in this country.  I'm guessing that, like myself, pro football is not the favorite of most folks who post on this board.  Most of us are either coaches, former players, or fans of the game at its purest.  The average NFL fan tunes in on Sundays for the drama, spectacle, and violence of the game.  They are as impressed by the seizure thing Ray Lewis does that supposedly inspires his team as Peyton Manning's ability to pick apart a defense.  PG is playing a role that will help establish his popularity with the fan base while his performance on the field builds his reputation with coaches, GM's, scouts, and those who actually understand the game.

I'm sorry but saying something is stupid has nothing to do with skin color.  The kid that banged the drum after his touchdown from SJF made a stupid decision.  If he played Mount again and scored another meaningless touchdown followed by a bang on the drum, I think plenty of Purple Raiders would call it stupid.  I don't hate white people because I think that.  Ochocinco changing his name is stupid.  I don't hate African-Americans.  Tiger Woods cheating on his wife (with a dozen women) is stupid.  I don't hate mixed-race individuals.

Stupid and racist are very different.

I think saying there's an underlying tone (of racism) is unfair.  You can dislike someone for what they do and how they act without any concern for the color of their skin.  Stepnick has a right to dislike Garcon because he torched Stepnick's school throughout his career.  You could replace Garcon with Randell Knapp, Adam Marino or Cecil Shorts III and he'd probably call them stupid too if he gave up 7 TD's in 3 games to one of them.  Is it petty?  Abosulutely.  But it's not racist.

As far as NFL endzone routines go, I think the point was missed too.  Stepnick clearly took exception to the fact that Garcon "posed" after TD's in college.  And I have no problem with him taking exception.  You're not supposed to be allowed to pose, taunt or anything of the sort.  If Pierre posed like Superman after every TD against SJF then Stepnick has a right to be upset because Garcon shouldn't have been allowed to do it by rule in the NCAA.

Look, Pierre is a joy to watch at the NFL level and I'm thrilled with his rise.  He deserves it because he played his butt off and is making the most of his athletic ability at the professional level.  He's a great downfield blocker and fits at that level.  That said, Stepnick is not the only one who didn't like some of the showboating or celebrating that Garcon exhibited at the D-III level and not everyone that disliked his antics is a racist.  He went from being a big fish in a small pond at Mount Union (regarding his potential at the next level) to one of many physically gifted guys in the league.  His attitude and behavior are probably on the low end of the spectrum as a pro but he rubbed some the wrong way in college.  As a pro, he's doing great things and making a name for himself as he proudly represents D-III, Mount Union and Haitian-Americans.

I don't like the showboating in football, especially in college. I really liked the way Kmic would hand the ball to the ref like it was all in a days work. On the other hand, Pierre can talk the talk.....because he can walk the walk.

I was referring to Sunday's Touchdown.  After he caught the 4 yard fade, he pointed to his name on the back of his Colts jersey.  To be honest, I took it not so much as him pointing out his name like a "look at me" moment but rather because of his Haitian roots, I thought he wanted to proudly show off where he came from as evidenced by his Haitian last name.  I thought Pierre handled himself incredibly well through the entire game and was happy he got a chance to wave the Haitian flag on camera while posing the trophy.

I think most celebrations and dances are over the top but I had no issue with his post-TD actions Sunday.  If he could have grabbed a Haitian flag and waved it I would have been totally okay but that is now black-listed as a prop and choreographed routine.

RC - Awesome article - Thanks for sharing.

We are at a point in our culture where anyone who says he dislikes anything can be called racist, homophobe, sexist, or a number of other monikers with negative connotations attached.  If I say I don't like beards, does that mean I'm a racist because Abe Lincoln had a beard?  If I don't like "American Idol" does it mean I hate homosexuals?

As long as you don't bring the Wabash cheerleaders into the discussion, then "no".  You're fine.

He pointed to his name during the Miami game also, it seems to be part of his schtick.

Couldn't find the Miami highlight but here is one against the Cards.
