My only issue with the slightly SJF-biased article is the simple fact that he didn't pose like Superman.

***Warning--my own hometown Rochester bias will show through in this post!***

It was definitely SJF biased, but that's understandable.  Part of Bob Matthews' (the article's author) focus in that Rochester-based paper is always working to show how Rochester-area sports are related to the bigger stage and how great a sports town Rochester is.  Rochester has only one professional sports team on the highest level, and that's indoor lacrosse.  They have a AAA baseball team, an AHL hockey team, a second-tier soccer team (that has beaten MLS teams on a few occasions and won the Gold Cup one year).  I have personally witnessed each of those They have one D-I school in RIT (so they can play DI Hockey) and a few historically good DIII teams.

Rochester has always had an inferiority complex, particulary where sports are concerned.  The greater metro area is not that different in population from Buffalo an hour away, but they've never gotten the big time sports.  Bob Matthews was using the fact that a Rochester-area team played against a Super Bowl player and Chapmionship Game start as a way to celebrate that Fisher (and Rochester) has some standing on the national level.

Cool story by Pluto today about Garcon's journey...

From Mount Union to Miami

Thanks for the link RC.  A great article, and the readers comments are interesting as well.

I agree. Great article. Thanks for posting the link. Love the story.

Small but Slow

PG85's pose pointing to his name on the back of his jersey has become his trademark TD celebration.  My son pointed it out to me during one of the promos for the divisional playoff game.  Being a relative unknown coming from a somewhat obscure background its brilliant self promotion. Part of becoming a fan favorite in the NFL is having a trademark.  PG is playing for his next contract, and name recognition increases value.  The more fans recognize the name the greater value he has as a free agent.

I don't like the showboating in football, especially in college. I really liked the way Kmic would hand the ball to the ref like it was all in a days work. On the other hand, Pierre can talk the talk.....because he can walk the walk.

I agree with Ace, but most of the NFL players do it after a TD. As much regard that I have for Pierre, I did not like the after TD poses when he was at Mount. I do think however, that he has learned " some" humility from the other Colt players.

I went to a "Pop Warner" game last fall and a kid ran for a 50 yard TD, nobody within 15 yards when he dives into the end zone rolls over and rises into a superman pose... He was 8 years old for goodness sake..I am sure his parents thought it was cute, but I wanted to puke, or strangle the little turd...  I just don't get the "me" "me" "me" attitude, especially in team sports.  The five guys blocking for "Greg Louganis's" TD didn't dive into the end zone, although they deserved more credit for it than he did, they cleared the path.
And, I know he was just emulating what he sees on the LCD in the living room.  But where does it all end?

With every "Lambeau Leap" I hope for a broken ankle, with every dive into the end zone, I hope for a torn abdominal muscle, for every superman pose, I look for Mike Curtis or Jack Lambert to come up and body slam the idiot.
Call me old fashioned, but these displays are bulls**t and I don't respect anyone who does it, not even my fellow Mount Union alumnus.

The one  that really ticks me off is the head bobbing and nodding after a play...like "yep. I did it." " Yep I'm cool."  " Yep, I'm a stupid f**k"

Sorry about the rant, but this is one that had made me turn off the broadcast on more than one occasion, better turn off the tube, instead of firing my remote through it..

Yeah, the comments are worth reading as well (I added one).  Great article, thanks, rc.
I sent it to everybody I know.  I even sent it to my ex-wife, a proud Big Ten school grad and huge Colts fan who forever liked to tease me about tiny Mount Union and Alliance being the Center of the Universe.
She responded today after reading Terry Pluto's story saying, "Finally, Mt. Union really is the Center of the Universe. Congratulations!! :)"

Well at least PG did not put a cell phone in the goal post pads like some other over paid so called superstar did a few years back.PG i beleive has earned the right to pat himself on the back.He has worked hard to get where he is at and deserves the attention now.Not only because of the Haiti situation but he has played  way beyond what i thought this soon.
From what i understand, PG is coming back to MUC to finish what he started...School!
Gotta love it, i hope i run into him and get to tell him how proud MUC and the city of Alliance is of him.
Oh, just think if PG has the same kind of game he did last week...Super Bowl MVP?

Small but Slow

Celebrating a big play is natural.  My preference would be for a player scoring a TD to wait until he gets back to his bench and celebrate with his teammates.  A couple years ago I had a player score 19 touchdowns in a six game middle school season.  He handled each one with class, never disrespected an opponent, and shared his excitement with the rest of the team.  I wish I could take credit for his humility, but it was his nature.  Even as a high schooler enjoying similar success he behaves the same way.  He is respescted by opposing players, as well as his team.   Class is a quality that is contagious.

Your new handle was in violation, as were your unfounded allegations.

Understood that you can't beat Mount Union. It's been noted. But throw down some proof other than the same old rumors and (by all evidence) lies.

Garcon mentioned that when he was interviewed on SportsCenter on Monday morning.
