That article by Mike Lopresti also appeared in the local Lansing, MI paper and Detroit Free Press today.  Indeed, nice article and it is great to see PC, MIcheli, LK and Mount Union as well as DIII get some press/notoriety.  Particularly from some of these people in the general public (i.e. the general sports fans) who think they know everything about the NFL and college football yet in reality "have no clue" about DIII. ;) :)

Several of us, who I come in contact with at work quite frequenty, are all ex-college football players from the various levels (NCAA DI, DII, and DIII).  You should see the looks we get from others at the work place when we're all discussing college football, especially regarding DII and DIII - they're amazed, but we're not, since we already know about "this stuff" ;D

MUC posted it on Facebook also.  It originated from USA Today, so that is why it is all over the place.

Former3db,

Great comments and observations. With Pierre having a great year with a great team and the response for the people of Haiti, we continue to see many stories in this post season for D3 football. it makes the upcoming 2010 season appear to be more near. :)

So who is going to get the Capital job?  If you haven't heard, Bickel to Ohio Dominican as the new Defensive Coordinator on Bill Conley's new staff.  Was announced to the team at 4:00 pm today.

JK,

What happen to cause a Capital HC to want to be a DC for a NAIA school that is not exactly a premier team? Has to be more to the story!!!! :o

See above.  Holy crap, I have no idea what is going on at my alma mater.  We've had this discussion several times, but it seems REALLY REALLY fishy that a bunch of coaches, really good coaches at that, have left suddenly in the last few years, especially from the football program.

Maybe I shouldn't freak.  THe last nationwide search Cap conducted got us Jim Collins.  I'm just not entirely sure that this one will bring us someone as talented unless the administration is firmly behind the program.

The only candidate internally would appear to be Henry Stanford, the O-coordinator.  But, like Bickel, he is a long time assistant who doesn't appear to harbor any desire to be a head coach.

I can speculate all I want about the administration at Cap, but deep down I think Bickel never wanted to be a HC and just feels more comfortable as a DC.  He never seemed comfortable as the head guy.  I think he felt pressured to take the HC job after Collins left and I think now he saw an opportunity in the area (I know for a fact he will not leave the Columbus area) to be a DC and he took it.  ODU is going to be D2 here in a few years, so it is a bit of a step up.

We'll seee, I guess.

Ohio Dominican is DII next season. They'll be in the GLIAC with Grand Valley St., Ashland, etc. in 2010/2011.

That makes sense.  Perhaps he decided he wanted to go to the DII level, a new challenge and especially as you say since OCU is going DII and that allows him to stay in the area.  On the other hand, if he just wanted to be a coordinator, and...if he wanted to stay at Capital, why didn't he just discuss that with the administration and his own current staff?  Perhaps they could have just switched staff positions with him stepping down as HC and doing the coordinator position.  Yet as you say, if he didn't really want to be a HC, it makes sense for him to have taken this opportunity.  Of course, however, this is speculation on my part and you guys know much more about Capital's situation and "climate" than I do.  It will be interesting to see who they choose as the next head coach.  Keep us posted.

Contrary to what I posted above, it seems they may not be DII next season for sure.  They will be in the GLIAC next season.  So in the interest of being 100% accurate I copied/pasted this from the Bickel release on ODU's web site:

"Currently affiliated with the National Association of Independent Athletics (NAIA), Ohio Dominican is in its second year as a candidacy member of the NCAA, with full membership in the NCAA Division II expected in 2011. In June 2009, ODU was accepted as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and will commence conference play effective August   2010."

There was a great interview with Pierre on the NFL network this morning. Kid has "it" whatever "it" is. What a smile! Anyway, it was fairly lengthy and well done. It's been fun watching his career from Mount to now. Well done, Pierre!

I guess Capital hires a MUC grad now, further Raiderizing the OAC coaching ranks.

How about Matt Campbell?  Although he is probably on the path to a DI Head Job someday since he is a DI Coordinator.

The Capital HC position is an opportunity for other former Raiders including Matt Campbell, but I wonder what the relationship is between the administration and the athletic dept. Is it a good atmosphere are not. Cap has been a good program, but are the comments we here about the environment there accurate or not? :-\

Guys don't bolt for no reason.  When alums are worried about the disconnect, then it's worth worrying about.  Where there's smoke, there is fire.

Interesting we are talking about coaches because I just learned that our biggest rival here, about five miles down the road, just hired a new coach.  Arizona has an open enrollment set-up, meaning kids can go anywhere regardless of their living situation, and are only penalized if they transfer to a new school during the 9-12 years if they don't have a change of address.  8th grade students out here are literally free agents and there's lots of recruiting action.  We have 8th graders on our high school campus and there is little in place to ensure they actually enroll here as 9th graders.  So the coaches in your immediate vicinity are impactful to recruiting as well.

We now get to try to convince our kids to stay here instead of attending the rival high school that is head coached by former Buckeye, former pro quarterback and Super Bowl winner Joe Germaine.

Awesome.
