ESPN (Bob Ley) did a great job on the Pierre Garcon segment with Pat Coleman and Coach Kehres. :)

Agreed.  I especially liked that Pat managed to slip in virtually all the other d3 players who had ever been in a Super Bowl. ;)

reality check

Hey I know it's a football site but I'm sitting here watching our JV girls basketball game after my frosh girls just won our final game of the season 49-48 on a three point step-back buzzer-beater from the baseline.  We end on a four game winning streak and really playing as a team.  With 3.6 left on the clock we fouled under our basket.  I called TO to set the defense and we held them off long enough for the inbounder to panic.  She threw long, the ball went untouched out of bounds so we got it back under our own basket.  After my last TO, we ran the play perfectly and my shooting guard caught a deflect inbound pass, stepped back and rattled in a three with no time on the clock!!!

Awesome end to a season.  We finish on a 4-game winning streak.

For anyone interested in OAC players competing in the Super Bowl,. Wooster's Blake Moore played for the Bengals in "82" vs Joe Montana and the 49 ers.

First Post!

Anyone have any news on any recruits that slipped through the cracks on signing day?  It's got to be tough for the OAC now with all the new DII and NAIA schools popping up in Ohio.

Welcome to the boards Tim.  I think the reputation and chances for Championships will keep MUC at the top of the recruiting game vs. the new DII and NAIA schools.
With the quality of education to be gained at schools like Mt. Union and the rest of the OAC, NCAC,  HCAC, UAA, and etc. DIII schools, it's unlikely that the most desirable STUDENT/ athletes will opt for DII or NAIAs anymore than in the past. Keep in mind that a majority of the student athletes, and I stress the student part, have already weighed their chances of furthering their athletic careers vs. preparing for an occupational future. They visit a few campuses and generally, because they are 17-18 yrs. old, make their decision in no small part based on visual perception of the campus and it's surroundings and if they are really smart they consider what the food is like.
Tuition costs and increases along with government subsidies and personal family tax incentives will likely govern a prospective students choice in the future as much as what division a sport plays in.

Welcome to the OAC board! Wittdad is correct, the NAIA and some DII  schools will not cause Mount Union and the rest of the OAC to panic. Education, tradition and reputation will keep the OAC very competitive. Last fall the Raiders were again in the National Title game, and the outlook for 2010 is looking promising. In addition this year's Superbowl with a talented D3 player in Pierre Garcon does not hurt OAC recruiting either! The Raiders will indeed have some top talent coming to Alliance. :)

I tried! :) It cost me later, though -- didn't get to talk much about Fred Jackson, probably because I took so long talking about Pete Metzelaars.

Small but Slow

The OTL piece was very nicely done.  Wish they would have spent more time on it, but the Warner/Dyson segment was good also.  I liked the tribute Kurt Warner gave Steve McNair.  Warner is class personified.

Pat - You represented all d3 athletes, coaches, and schools with class and poise.  You, LK, and PG displayed great eloquence and composure.  I hope the average football fan was paying attention.  D3 doesn't receive the national spotlight often, but the men representing it on OTL did us proud!

Welcome aboard!  A few years ago there was concern that Ashland (D2), Malone, and Walsh (both NAIA) would dilute the Mount Union talent pool.  The only school standing in the way of five consecutive national titles is another D3 school in Wisconsin.

Yet you still couldn't slip in that he led Wabash to the national title in basketball! :P

I'd think Pete's gotta be the greatest overall athlete in d3 history.

[Can't recall if you omitted any others, but you didn't mention Jim Jodat (Carthage) who was special teams captain for the LA Rams in '79.  Until Studebaker or Ittersagen makes it, I've gotta stick up for our CCIW guy! :D]
