Can someone explain Division III spring practice to me?  Is it helmets only?  Is it uppers, but no contact?  How many days do they get?

No Pads At all.
Used to be Conditioning only, but recently (last couple of years) they allowed footballs.

Here is a post on the General Football Board that gives the details:

Really sounds like Cap has no leadership in the athletic department and in the presidents office at this point.  Why would you let something fall from grace that was so good?  What happened to the candidates that interviewed?  Did they all turn down the job or see how messed up things were there?  Is anyone going to want this job?  Is the administration going to let the next guy do what he needs to do or win?  Or is it going to be, recruit and retain kids, we could care less if you win or not, which is what I have heard.  Which wouldn't winning help to retain kids?  Sounds like they are going back to the bass akwards type of ways that it was there eleven or twelve years ago.

Thanks.  Doesn't sound like much, but its a step forward.  Ever gonna have full contact, or even helmets any time soon?

I think it might be moving in that direction, but will probably take some time.

From the outside, that is exactly what it looks like.  Which is what we figured when Collins quit soon after the new college president was hired.   Not a good time to be a Crusader.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

I second the motion on the floor.  And, I was playing there 11 or 12 years ago, so I know firsthand how bass ackward it was.

I remember when I was working in the Mount SID office, ESPN called Mount about covering our "Spring Practice" like they did for Tennesse, OSU, Florida.  The lack of research by the "worldwide leader in sports "was pretty funny

Well, I guess if I was Henry, I'd be happy, but whats up with the whole nationwide search crap and then you name the guy who was standing there all along days before Spring workouts?

Oh yeah Henry, you can be the head coach, we just wanted to save the salary money for a couple of months
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

You guys beat me to it, it's official, Stanford gets promoted.

Though, 70's raises a good point.  Makes you wonder if someone else (Henninger, maybe) was their first choice and turned it down.  You'd think if they wanted Stanford all along they just would have promoted him right away.

Doesn't seem like the admin at Capital has all their ducks in a row.  Hope Mr. Stanford can do well, despite the perceived lack of support.

You all make good points.  This may be a dumb question showing my ignorance, however, I'll ask it anyway.  Although I realize that in the coaching ranks, and this topic we are discussing here i.e. selection of coaches that even though a college might want from the beginning to select someone from their existing staff (which might be the plan all along), don't they by law have to post a job to the "outside" i.e. thereby constituting a "national search" ;D ??????  Even if so, I agree with all of you that it seems like a huge waste of time, resources and perhaps $, not only for the college, which could be focusing all those aspects in other areas of need perhaps, but also wasting the time of candidates coming in.  On the other hand, I guess it is needless to say that for someone aspiring to be a college head coach coming up through the ranks, it's obvious you have to take interviews if offered those opportunities.

I am thinking being a private school they wouldnt have as stringent requirements, but then again I think even if you receive a small amount of federal funds you are beholden to their rules, i.e. Title IX.

I'm not sure either. I know the NFL has the Rooney rule, but I don't know how this process works at the NCAA level and specifically the private school level. As a guess I would say there aren't any requirements.

JK

As a rule, jobs do have to be posted.  However, typically if the school is going to hire someone on the existing staff, they usually do it quickly.  As well, most of the time they usually don't interview if they are set on someone from within.  They post it, receive resumes, contact candidates and tell them thanks but they will not be interviewed and then announce the guy from within has been promoted.

The fact that Cap brought in 4 or 5 for interviews makes me believe that Stanford was not initially believed to be the guy they wanted to hire.  He got an interview and made the short list because he was the "next in line" on the staff.  Now, maybe he just blew them away in his interview, but it still makes me think he was not the #1 choice at the start.

Essentially, by going through the process and then hiring from within, they basically wasted a month.  A month that left recruits wondering and returning players in limbo.  A month that Stanford, already on campus, could have spent improving his team...
