And some of them become great receivers and defensive backs.

Quote from: Small but Slow on March 19, 2010, 09:49:17 PMIts tough to draw the necessary crowds in a region where the OU enrollment makes up a good percentage of the population.

Even tougher trying to get people without strong attachments to drive there. I've driven back north late at night after games and it can be scary

The state has greatly improved the highway system around Athens, but its still remote.  The football team has played in a couple of MAC championships recently and has gone to several bowl games, but the locals don't travel too well for more reasons than I can begin to explain here.  The area also lacks large corporate sponsors to provide financial support that MAC schools such as Kent or Akron have.

I grew up going to almost every OU home game so last night's game was rather nostalgic for me.  The next biggest win in my memory was in the early 80's Ray Myer brought his DePaul Blue Deamons into Athens.  The Convo was packed as the Bobcats stunned DePaul.  I also made it back to see OU host OSU in a first round NIT game circa '86-'87.  Rumor from Facebook friends still living in Athens is that OU is strongly considering scaling back their programs, possibly giving up DI status.  Its tough to draw the necessary crowds in a region where the OU enrollment makes up a good percentage of the population.

I know it's tough for schools like OU in the MAC.  However, I hope OU doesn't abandon their DI status.  Obviously, they work hard to get the support and following they do and it is understandable regarding the local people being reluctant to travel far for games, although they did have a decent showing (both in fan support and their own performance) at the Little Ceasar's Bowl at Detroit.  In a similar vein, schools like Tulane were thinking of dropping down to DII or DIII also in recent years, however, decided to "stay the course".  Anyway, IMO, there are several schools, if not all of them, in the MAC, if using that logic, should in reality drop to the FCS category.  However, I hope they would stay at least at that level.  Yet, in the end, $ is the deciding factor as we all know.

Thanks raider, it is a bit scary for a kid with two years left to miss spring practice, come and then come join a team with several returning QB's.  The back up last yrear was a freshman so unless there is tremendous improvement from the uppercalssmen I would think the competiton would come from those two guys.
Competition isnt the issue its about having a reasonable opportunity to compete and win the job.

I think he will have a better understanding after his visit and when the staff has a chance to evaluate the results of spring practice.  I hope it all works out.  Of the other d3 schools that are recruiting him there are at least two schools where he knows he will start but....they are not Mt. Union.  We have our fingers crossed.

Snoop,
Seriously I wouldn't let him go to Mount Union if he is looking to start game 1!  If Nate Kmic gets lost ANYONE can! Good luck but I am guessing this is a dad idea!  Get back with me in December.

Nope not my idea......I want him to go to a local school here in So. Cal so I can go to all the games.    He also has d2 offers that are full schollies...meaning I pay nothing!  Thats not so bad either.  I do think MUC would be a good fit if he has a realistic chance, which he ahs been told is the situation.  Like I said, he will have a better feel for it after his visit.

That is a bit of a Presumption isn't it?  I'm fairly sure Snoop is aware of his son's chances of playing time at MUC.  He is a regular on here and has read what has been discussed over the years about how playing time is earned at MUC.

Mount has been very successful at playing older, more experienced and physically mature players. Sure Seaman got playing time last year but he is a work in progress. He very much looked his age on some occasions. Larry is going to play the young men who give him the best chance of winning first, and then give a shot to those who need to gain game experience. It's a luxury he very often has.

I'd plan on your son spending most of the summer in Alliance if he chooses Mount for workouts, pickup games and camps.

snoop:

I am from one of the other boards, however, have been following your and OAC colleague's discussion here regarding your son.  First, I wish your son (and you, of course) all the best in whatever decision he decides to make.  Even if he chooses a school farther away from you, I'm sure you will make as many games as you can.  While that situation would obviously be more difficult, it is not impossible.  You can ask JacketsFan who is from Jacksonville, FL and whose son played all four years up at Defiance, OH in the HCAC.

Secondly, I have a general question for you.  You mentioned that your son has DII offers i.e. which essentially are a full scholarship situation for you/him.  I am curious - since NCAA DII regulations currently limit football scholarships at that level to 36, which means that most schools offer 1/2 to 1/3 scholarships to their players, I'm assuming that your son's full scholarship offers include some academic and/or community $ in the overall package OR are you talking about NAIA offers, which could possibly be full scholarships? (I am not familiar with the rules/regulations in the NAIA for that).  Anyway, again, good luck on your son's decision - keep us posted!

Good points, Seventies is right on. The fact that the coaches have reviewed the films and are anxious to meet him, provides an opportunity to make an impact. Like all other Mount QB's, he would have to earn it, but being in the areas for the summer willing help alot, if he decides to come to Mount. :)

Former db.....not sure of what the offer is made up of but he was told school would be free.

I would make many many games if he were playing.

While it is nice to have a free ride if the school of choice and the football program is what you want, but it is another to accept something that one does not have your heart into it. I have been through that and it is the experiences later that matter the most! :)
