Perhaps it was a lack of success in recruiting efforts this summer that finally prompted the decision???  Final straw maybe?

That makes sense.  Might as well cut your losses now and hopefully get some new blood/excitement into the program than go through another mediocre season.

How does Wilmington find a new "good" coach this late in the year before summer camp, unless they promote an assistant?  A tall task, no doubt!

How does Wilma find a good coach?  PERIOD.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Why all of the sudden does the new coach have to be good?  That clearly hasn't been part of the criteria in the recent past.

I dont know who should be the most hated, but Dan Gilbert should be the most loved man in CLE right now

Gilbert did all he could, but he is a competitive owner so we will see what he does and when he can develop another good team in Cleveland!

...........and now back to those Ohio athletes who want to be in Ohio like
Trusnik.  :)

Gilbert didn't do all he could.  If he did, Lebron would be in Cleveland with a top-tier free agent sitting there with him.  I firmly believe Lebron would have stayed in Cleveland if Cavs leadership could have secured someone to play with him.  Once Wade and Bosh chose Miami, Lebron would have been foolish to stay in Cleveland with little roster change.

Anyone looking for a 35,000 sq ft home in the Akron area?  I hear one just came available...

I may be interested.  The wife and I are ready to downsize. ;)

Wilmington is not the easiest place to win- just because a guy has a poor record it does not make him a bad or poor coach. Not all places are built to win. If the guy takes over a program that has traditionally lost- he is probably going to lose. If a guy takes over a program that has traditionally won he is going to win. What he has to work with is the key. Not always - But usually.

^ true, but it's fun to pick on Wilmington.  The town more than the college, but fun nonetheless.

Wilmington was tough their first year on the OAC. But the town still makes Sebring look like paradise

So how can they improve the program?

- very small rural town
- no coach 5 weeks before the summer camp starts
- a non-winning history

The next coach will have just a few things to address! ::)

Congrats to Cecil Shorts to being listed, a great season performance and a National title would not hurt either! :)

First thing's first they need to change the school name to Wilmington University.  That will fix a lot right there.

If step one doesn't fix things, then step two would be to get some flatbed trailers, wide load signs and pick the actual school up, piece by piece, and find another town/city to relocate.

If steps one and/or two fail, then call in Busta99 for some sort of expert opinion consultation and do whatever he says will help, no matter how stoonkish foolish it sounds.

Wilmington is a tough sell to recruits.....Besides being in BFE, the loss of DHL to the town was catastrophic.  The school looks old, and the football facilities are the level of a Div. III high school.

I'll never forget when MUC played there a couple of years ago.  Wilma had suffered a few injuries to quarterbacks in preceding games.  They, literally, had no one to play the position.  They had gone so far as to post flyers around campus advertising "open tryouts" for quarterbacks prior to the MUC game......you had better odds against the lions in the coliseum.

That was the worst game I've ever witnessed at any level.  Wilmington usually displays marginal effort against MUC in a normal year, but that day they wanted absolutely no part of being on the same field with the Raiders.  It looked like a freshman HS squad practicing against varsity.  They were scared to death.

That day would have been much better if it would have been played in Alliance.  At least I wouldn't have wasted an entire Saturday on driving to Wilma, watching that debacle and then driving home.  Those are the trips/opponents that make the radio gig a real chore.

And to make my day even worse, during the commercial timeout between the 3rd and 4th quarters Ric took his headset off, sat down and said "I'm done with this sh--, the rest of the game is yours".  The last 15 minutes were painful.  Luckily no one back in Alliance was still listening at that point......

Those have to be the toughest games to broadcast.  There's only so many "I remember when" stories....unfortunately, you have had quite a few of those games over the years (maybe that is a good thing) ;)
