St. Lawrence is one of the Top 50 colleges for sticker price (I hope you can get to this link.) It's $51,700 a year to attend St. Lawrence U.

Pointless observation about Witt/ONU:

Wittenberg (1999)

373 points scored (37.3 points per game)
110 points given up (11.0 points per game)

Approx 1600 passing yards and 2500 rushing yards

Top two receivers: approx 1300 yards and 12 TDs

Wittenberg escapes with a 3 point win at Allegheny 20-17

Wittenberg plays a tough game at Wooster to close out the regular season (21-14 ballgame deep into 4th quarter...)

NCAC player of the year: Casey Donaldson (1308 yards and 17 total touchdowns)

Wittenberg (2010)

372 points scored (37.2 points per game)
117 points given up (11.7 points per game)

Approx 1600 rushing yards and 2800 passing yards

Top two rushers: approx 1300 yards and 14 TDs

Wittenberg escapes with a 3 point win at Allegheny 24-21

Wittenberg squeaks out their final game at Wooster to close out the regular season

Probable NCAC player of the year: Josh McKee (1354 yards and 16 total touchdowns)

Mt. will go as far as Neal can take them.  The hub of any Kehres team is and always will be the QB.  A lot of pressure for the soph. QB esp. in the later rounds.  I think he will be equal to the task.  He has shown the ability to get the job done when push comes to shove.  With a little luck and some breaks here and there, Mt. has a good chance of making the Stagg.  They will need CS to step it up a notch and provide the leadership this young team needs.  Playoff football is a different animal.  The seniors must provide the spark and skills when things get tight.  Mt. will have some close games maybe not this week but certainly later on.  They have come along way with along way to go, I believe they are equal to the task.  This should be an exciting run         GO RAIDERS!

The Raiders will have one competitive game before Salem.  They will skate to the semi's.  I'm in the minority, but I believe there will be a Mount Union/Linfield semi-final.  That should be a great game. Until then, just stay healthy and do what they do and the games won't be close.    ;)

rc,

Why did you research your curious, interesting if "Pointless observation..."?  Why did I research the pointless followup?

  • Wittenberg (1999) did not play in Stagg Tournament
  • Wittenberg (2010) is playing in Stagg Touranment

Bleedpurple,

I agree with you, it would be a great game and a first trip to Alliance for Linfield. IMHO, it will be UWW vs. Wesley in the other semi-final! :)

TGP always provides great analysis on Hobart and the Liberty League.  Listen to him and others talk with Mark Raymond, SLU's head coach, on the most recent In the Huddle:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/ith

The only thing I would add to TGP's analysis is what I mentioned earlier about the red zone.  St. Lawrence has held opponents to around 58% scoring in red-zone opportunities, and they have forced 12 turnovers inside their own 20 (including on downs).

That being said, they have still given up a lot of points on the season, so they are susceptible to the big play.

For more info on the St. Lawrence team, sheck out their media guide:

I'm trying to type this without coming off as a Brash, Mount Union A-hole so as to respect the opposition.

But, I don't see StL staying close in this one.  Some very good undefeated and 1-loss teams have come to Alliance in the playoffs and been thoroughly embarrassed.  I would be very surprised if UMU is held under 50 points in this game .  Although I did pick StL in the OAC Pick'ems (they were given +64.5 by HSCoach).   I don't think there is any reason for Coach Kehres to keep the foot on the gas if it get's out of hand (no brash or outrageous comments from the opposition).

The problem is that there is a 52 man playoff roster limit, so if things get out of hand, there isn't much depth to substitute with.  Also, it is the playoffs and you want to get your 1st team ready to play a full game (UMU starters don't do that much during the season) as they progress through the playoffs.

UMU historically has been VERY good in the red zone.  With the play-action passing and crossing routes, they have been virtually impossible to stop. So if this is a StL strength, it will surely be tested.

The one thing that holds me back is the youth of the UMU team this year.  A few SOLID seniors, not many juniors, and a lot of sophomores are starting so if there is time for UMU to not make it to the Stagg bowl, this could be it.

The one stat that still amazes me (even more than the 10 National Championships) is that Mount Union has been to the National Semifinals 14 years in a row (made it to the Stagg 12 of those years).  If you go back to 1992, they have been to the National Semifinals 16 out of 17 years (Stagg 13 times) and the one time they didn't make at least the Semi-Finals was a loss in 1994 in the Quarterfinals.  If ever there was a program that RELOADS without having to REBUILD, this is it.

Mount Union's Record since 1992 is 227-10 (average 0.58 losses per YEAR from 1992-2009).

We'll see over the next few weeks if this young Mount Union team can continue the tradition or not, but IMO is what makes this season more excitable to watch.

Sorry for the diatribe and I hope I didn't step on anyone's toes.

Good Luck Larries this weekend!

Really confused.  Wittenberg played Alma in the first round of the playoffs in 1999 before losing in the second round to ONU.  So what are you talking about?

RC,

I admire and respect your interesting and insightful contributions to the OAC board; and I apologize for confusing you.  My error was in quickly finding and perusing the Wittenberg Football Release @

http://www4.wittenberg.edu/news/athletics/football/release.shtml.

I allowed myself to be mislead (confused) by the info in the WFR from 1999 - not a current release.

NCAA Division III Playoffs: Wittenberg has made seven previous appearances to the Division III playoffs. The Tigers won titles in 1973 and 1975 by defeating Juniata 41-0 and Ithaca 28-0, respectively. In 1978, the Tigers fell to Baldwin-Wallace 24-10 and in 1979 to Ithaca 14-10, both losses coming in the Stagg Bowl. Wittenberg's next trip was in 1988 when they upset Dayton 35-28 in double overtime before losing to Augustana 28-14 in the North Regional final. In 1995 the Tigers lost to Wheaton (Ill.) 63-41 in the first round. Last year the Tigers defeated Millikin 13-10 and then fell to eventual national champion Mount Union 21-19 in the North Regional final.

I think it deserves to be noted that Jeremy Murray finished the regular season with 1208 yards despite not being the true number one running back till after the Wilmington game in which he did not play. 16 TD's in 7 games.

I also have not seen much about #30 K Thomas, a freshman with 17 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and five sacks. Even when he doesn't get credit for the play, he's in the neighborhood, or he turned the play back to the person who did get credit. He is playing bigger than 5'11" to be getting playing time away from Budzinski and Dieseul

I think we can all agree that the NCAC/Witt's schedule is a complete joke...

Advantage p bears...

With an OAC schedule and a WIAC non-conference game the bears are battle tested and should be ready to go this weekend... the thing that scares me is that Northern tends to not show up at least once a year...  I would like to think that the no show already came this year in Alliance but I tend to think that other factors (like The U's d) were involved but who knows...
