By the by-I know HSCoach wants to continue to dis this defense, but add up the total rushing yards in the last THREE games combined, it's less than 150 yards, heck they have given up 388 total yards in THE LAST THREE GAMES COMBINED

Defense has saved the team several times this year, to be honest I don't recall more than two "pure" long drives that were "run based"
I don't count a long kick-off return, aided by personal fouls-but-I bet the COACH counts those---siimply put, if you can run it-consistently-on the boys, you have a chance-if all you do is run dive plays? Or just  pass? Good luck, you'll need it-btw, is  there a "sneakier"  more opportunistic kid than #21? Driskell in our conference?

I'm not concerned about the defense.  They've played very well as the season progressed.

And I'm not "dis-ing" them either over the SLU game.  Was simply stating that shutting down an offense ranked 206 out of 236 D3 teams without their starting QB isn't reason for a parade thru campus.

Sorry for being somewhat of a realist.....

For the record, I wasn't scheduling any parades for the defense.

I think I started all this talk about the D by posting their current national rankings.  I was just happy that the unit was finally leading the country in some important categories (Total Defense, Passing Efficiency Defense, and Scoring Defense).  I usually check those stats periodically through the year and this was the first year in recent memory where Mount Union (and/or an individual player) wasn't leading the nation in a handful of categories.  I'm sure it's because of the youth of the team and although the St. Lawrence game certainly helped in those rankings, they are based on the 11 games played this year, so it appears that the Defense is finally hitting it's stride.
National Champions - 13: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017

Hey Seventies,,

I played against big red 4 years,,and it was really bad if you beat them there. bus windows broken,,sitting on the bus floor till we were out of town etc ,,but they played and still do play good ball !!

Some random thoughts on defense(and stats in general)..... although I AM a stats guy(bill james/sabremetrics disciple) it seems pretty simple. If you're averaging in the 5-9 ppg allowed? You are a good defense I think. Offense? My magic number is 27+

Random thought#1 Mt union gave up 28 pts in first game, since then, the D has been stingy and has kept their heads up
and in the game when the offense and special teams were giving the D huge holes to dig out of

Random thought #2  Given that the better teams (again, I've only followed d3/mount 2009/2010) do get some blow outs, if the 2nd/3rd
teams give up a TD or they mess up on offense? 3-4 TDS in multiple blow outs don't mean much to us fans(I'm sure it does to the coaches and players) but it can jack up your numbers one way or the other

Random thought #3  you can get/give a butt whipping in a 21-0 game OR have a close game by the same score. It depends on style of play. 21-0 by the 1960 era packers? Yikes, that game was over in third quarter!  21-0 against "dan fouts/chargers era" naw, not so much, 2 sloppy passes intercepted and ya have a game on your hands

#4? UMU sure has high standards-as I am sure the other top teams do....  if ithe game isnt  COMFORTABLY over by early in third quarter, you can sense the "wtf is going on" vibe in the stands, that's not a complaint, just an observation btw

seventies? I figured you might not be back home from the war zone yet? How'd  the massey prediction turn out?

Raider 68

According to the D3 predictors, one of them does not have "that much" confidence in the Raiders for this Saturday or the playoffs in general! ???

Checking in from Linfieldville I just noticed that MUC is now UMU. I'm guessing the change is very recent is it not?

First off gotta state the obvious, I am a Aggie supporter and alum so you know who im really rooting for tomorrow. Wanted to just say best of luck to you guys tomorrow in what should be a great game between two good teams. I am really looking forward to this game and seeing what Mt Union is like in person. Best of luck and may both teams play well tomorrow, but hopefully the Aggies better.

Welcome to The Machine.  Win or lose I hope you enjoy the trip.  You won't get the full Mount Union experience since the Raider Marching Band is taking the holiday off, and the absence of the students and competition with the Ohio State - Michigan game will keep the crowd small.  Still, it should be a great, if cold, day.

We all picked Mount Union to win the bracket, 68, so I don't know where you're getting that.

Quote(Mount Union bracket) Champion

Frank: For the first time in a few years, it will not be Mount Union College. However, the University of Mount Union will be the champion.

Ryan: You-Em-You.

Keith: Mount Union. They might have shown enough weakness to worry observant fans, but their defense is stingy and they didn't have to pull out a single game in the fourth quarter. Plus there's one player (Cecil Shorts III, coming off a four-TD Week 11) who can mask any issues against teams that are merely pretty good.

Pat: Mount Union. And there's no need for more words here, but I'm writing just anticipating that some of my colleagues will simply say Mount Union and leave the page looking awful blank in this section.

Guess I should have used Dunkel Predicts  ::) Massey said Mogadore 21-14, the reality was Shadyside 28, Mogadore 13. The transfer in Senior QB, who I never had ANY faith in, pee'd down his leg from the first snap.
