Question for Purple fans

What was the tipping point? What I mean is this...what was the change that began to bring this great success to your respective programs.

Mout--early 90s and they went from a very good program to elite

WW--in 2000s it seemed they took things to another level...

I am always fascinated on how people build "programs" and these two certainly got the formula working

MTU: Dedication and work ethic and consistency in the Coaching Staff.  Also great support by the Administration and Alumni.

Just found this article from a couple of years ago where Coach Kehres talks about the early years:

National Champions - 13: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017

For me it was 1996 when Mount finally beat LaCrosse, things just seemed to spiral from there.

Thanks for the article...wonder what he does as far as player development--talent is huge--but the connection he has with his players is huge

Never knew that Kent State had offered him...interesting!  ;D

I found that article because I googled "Larry Kehres" looking to see if he has written a book or published anything himself on the topic of building the program.

I know he has a chapter in the Football Coaching Bible.

Picked up my Stagg Bowl tickets at Mount this morning.  Lots of good seats are left.  Get 'em while they last! ;)

I used to be the equipment manager for the MUC program.  One reason why I wanted to work for Coach Kehres was that I wanted to be a coach myself, and figured that I could learn a lot from him.  As a result, I would ask Coach Kehres coaching questions.  A lot of questions.  He told me one day as we walked back from the practice fileds at 21st street, that the change came from a change in view point.  He said to me, "When we first got into the playoffs, we viewed our opponent as if they were the Green Bay Packers.  Then I realized that, we were all on the same level, and approached each game in that manner.  The same things you do to be successful in the regular season need to carry over into the playoffs."  Obviously, the reason is much more complex, but, basically, it boils down to that statement for me.

Re the Green Bay Packers reference by Larry Kehres:

"As we approached the brow of the hill from which it was expected we could see Harris' camp, and possibly find his men ready formed to meet us, my heart kept getting higher and higher until it felt to me as though it was in my throat.  I would have given anything to be back in Illinois.  . . . When we reached a point from which the valley below was in full view I halted.  The place where Harris had been encamped  a few days before was still there and the marks of a recent encampment were plainly visible, but the troops were gone.  My heart resumed its place.  It occured to me at once that Harris had been as much afraid of me as I had been of him.   This was a view of the question I had never taken before; but it was one I never forgot afterwards."

I think Larry would tell you to find the best young men and best athletes you can and not waste time trying to find kids that fit the style of football your comfortable coaching. Coach the team that's in front of you and exploit their talents.

Be consistent, be honest and coach fundamentals, and coach fundamentals and coach fundamentals and coach fundamentals.

Remember your not teaching football. Your teaching young men how to be successful in life.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

To build a program/business/organization...you must have a long-term commitment of the staff!  Out here in Tacoma, Frosty Westering was at Pacific Lutheran for 32 years and compiled a staggering 261-70-5 (.784 winning percentage), and no PLU team under his guidance suffered a losing season.  Scott Westering, Frosty's son has just finished his seventh year as head coach at PLU and is building a solid program. I see the same commitment developing at Bethel University...Head Coach, Steve Johnson (22 years); Offensive Coord., Greg Peterson (8 years); Defensive Coord., Jimmy Miller (10 years).  "The grass is seldom greener on the other side."

As an aside...Bethel is in the Stagg Bowl.....indirectly and remotely....UWW Athletic Director, Paul Plinske is a Bethel University graduate and was an assistant football and assistant basketball coach at Bethel University in Saint Paul, MN from 1992-94.

Hope to see Bethel back in the playoffs next year with 14 returning starters.

Reality Check as in you provide one? Or as in you NEED one?  ;)

Hi-larious.

One of the funniest least whiny things you've posted ever today.

Ahh...so part of Seventies "silent majority" emerges.  ;)
