On behalf of Mt (and UWW), I too am tired of all the accusations as to why they are unfairly successful.  At this rate of silly rationalizations for mediocrity, we will soon have to establish a sliding scale of providing "dis-advantaged points" to opponents before the game begins.  No DI tranfers in the last year- you get 10 dis-advantage points.  You're not a state school, you get 12 dis-advantage points.  No NFL players from your school, you get 5.  Your budget is smaller than average, here's 14 dis-advantage points.

You want a bigger athletic department budget?  Win.

As for transfers, I say "who cares" whether Mt gets them or not?  If Mt gets more than their fair share, I reckon it has to do with the fact that they have won more than their fair share of games when they didn't have transfers.  Then, with success, maybe a few kids that originally chased their dreams at a D I school came to the realization that they'd rather play at a great DIII school than sit at a DI school.  I don't get it, why is it a bad thing if it happened at Mt, UWW or anywhere else?

For some that may not know, before 2005 UWW had never been to the Stagg, yet they were still located in WI, still a state school and had the same academic standards.

And I'm sure the football players transferred out of Mount Union is three-four times the number transferred in. All kinds of kids changing schools so they can play JV for a year or two at Mount. NOT

Congrats to UWW for a great game and the win.  Congrats to both teams for representing Division III so well.

I don't want this to come off as a slight by any means but did anyone else watching the Stagg think (and this might just sound absurd) that Coppage ran for a "quiet" 299 yards.  I know 75 of them came on that breakout to seal it but even then he seemed very methodical and patient in his running and next thing you know he was sitting on 200+ yards.

I was surprised it took a couple pages for someone to react to the accusation post mentioning "leadership scholarships".

Someone said that Mount found and developed guys like Garcon but I think it's important to remember that in the case of Garcon, it was more of a case of him finding Mount than Mount finding him.

Imitation is the best form of flattery but accusations and jealousy really let you know when you've arrived.

I would agree on the comment, RC, about the "quiet 300 yards.  You mentioned 75 coming at the end, but there was also the 54 yard TD in the first.  that's 130 yards on two plays.  OK, he still ran for 170 the rest of the game, but when your two biggest runs are spaced out so far, it's easy to forget about them, I think.  The part that was most frustrating about him is that he often seemed to get just a yard or two more than he needed. 2nd and 5?  He gets 6.  3rd and 2?  He gets three.  Those extra one or two yards really added up until he broke the bank with 75 added on.

Remember when we were excited if we could find Garcon's name on the Colt's depth chart?

I remember the announcers talking about how this kid who is probably 180 lbs soaking wet always seems to fall forward and never goes backwards...it is that one extra yard that means the most

drt- I think the other gorilla, at least from my perception, is the greatness of the UWW defense.  For three straight weeks, UWW seemed to face the best, fastest or toughest defense in the country from NCC to Wesley to Mt.  So many people put too much emphasis on the points scored by Franklin and Trine.  The three #1 seeds scored a total of 38 points (7 of Mts came when starting at the UWW 4 yd line).

I said it before and I'll say it again, no team had to play the diversity and talent of offenses as UWW played in the playoffs.  Teams like Wesley and Mt may have gone to the pass so much because they saw the success Franklin and Trine had.  But Franklin and Trine run offenses designed around the spread with highly athletic qb's, short routes and quick passing.  The offensive styles of Wesley and Mt are more traditional and it played to UWW's strength.

Whoops, left the log ON again.
+k Emma, RC and supply preacher for posts on this page when I got back to it after ...ugh... WORK

Emma, re: the many who would rather play than sit it out on a D1 bench

RC, the silent. Coppage run to 300. I first couldn't BELIEVE when I heard it was that high. Then, like others have said, I began to put together the three plus five  plus eleven....

Preacher, yeah, I hear A LOT about what you noted as well.   ;)

Totally agree.  "Quiet," 299 yards is right.  I kept feeling like we just couldn't get a big running game going and that would, ultimately, hurt us if we had to air it out a lot more than the game plan had called for.  :D  It never really felt, with the exception of the final run, like we were watching a strong running game the likes of Beaver/Jones in 07 on the years that Kmic just dominated the game.  But I guess it was truly fitting as the word, "patient," has been used all year to describe this team.

BTW, what's a, "leadership scholarship?"   ;) ;D

...Further, an average freshman class at Alfred numbers around 500. For fall 2010, 133 of those freshmen were tuition-paying football players. Pep concludes that AU benefits from its football program...

Pep, you sure you don't mean that there were 133 students in all classes?  The way you stated it would mean there were about 400-500 football players at Alfred (or 25% of the enrollment).  It's still a healthy number at 133 out of 2000 students.

I think Pep was merely stating how many freshman came to camp and wasn't commenting on the natural attrition which whittles that number down to a couple dozen by senior year.

"did anyone else watching the Stagg think (and this might just sound absurd) that Coppage ran for a "quiet" 299 yards".

Actually, the "quiet" part to me was the 39 carries- I didn't think it was that many and I wanted more.  As usual for me these playoffs, I sat in the stands and repeatedly called for UWW to pound the rock.  From the opening drive I felt we could run the ball.  At 39 carries and 299 yards, he averaged 7.66 yards per carry.  So take away the 75 yarder- and at 38 carries and 224 yards he averaged 5.9 yards per carry- so take away that 55 yarder, and at 37 carries and 169 yards, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry.

Anybody out there think they could do pretty well with a back that averages 4.6 yards per carry in the national championship game?

When an 18 year old kid or a 20 year old transfer steps onto the campuses for a football visit at Mount and/or WWW, the one thing that gets his attention is the size of the rings on the fingers of the players.  I believe it is a major factor, as all athletes (or I gotta believe a very large percentage) want to flash one of those things at the folks and teammates in the old home town, be it Miami or Mayberry.

Theaprof:  Please forward my "credits" to MtFan as payment for the great lunch he gave my son & I before the game.   Many thanks to MtFan!

Thanks to all that were able to join the 2010 Stagg tailgate, it was a terrific time and was glad so many could show and mother nature cooperating this year. HScoach, Ric, 70's, theaprof, Seadog, HurfMUC, Wesleydad, Lenny, the purple gang, students, and especially all the friends and player parents made it a great occasion even if we came up a bit short on the scoreboard. I will say i've cooked more this time than any in the past, and we went through some serious pulled pork, chili, wings and shrimp lol, but was a privilege host and expect we'll be doing another Stagg tailgate in about 360 or so days!

Congrats to the Warhawks, on the war of attrition you guys held out! your punter and Coppage were especially outstanding! I haven't seen a punter more deadly at this level, the dude was lights out keeping 1) Shorts from any significant returns and 2) when he needed a nail in the coffin, so to speak, he swung with a sledgehammer! What a series this has become! Can hardly wait for a rematch, this is reminiscence of the Haglar/Hearns days...gotta love it!
Congrats Raiders, you prove to most of us that even when we may have had doubts of getting a chance at the walnut&bronze you made it happen! Your determination, commitment, and passion to achieve have shown us all why you deserved that opportunity but even more so that Raider Nation is still strong and there will be plenty more to come! Thanks again to LK, and the coaching staff for making it a wonderful season.
Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas and a terrific New Year. Especially those serving for our freedom. As Toby Keith would say "... so we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head. "  Happy Holidays and God Bless!
