Theaprof:  Please forward my "credits" to MtFan as payment for the great lunch he gave my son & I before the game.   Many thanks to MtFan!

Thanks to all that were able to join the 2010 Stagg tailgate, it was a terrific time and was glad so many could show and mother nature cooperating this year. HScoach, Ric, 70's, theaprof, Seadog, HurfMUC, Wesleydad, Lenny, the purple gang, students, and especially all the friends and player parents made it a great occasion even if we came up a bit short on the scoreboard. I will say i've cooked more this time than any in the past, and we went through some serious pulled pork, chili, wings and shrimp lol, but was a privilege host and expect we'll be doing another Stagg tailgate in about 360 or so days!

Congrats to the Warhawks, on the war of attrition you guys held out! your punter and Coppage were especially outstanding! I haven't seen a punter more deadly at this level, the dude was lights out keeping 1) Shorts from any significant returns and 2) when he needed a nail in the coffin, so to speak, he swung with a sledgehammer! What a series this has become! Can hardly wait for a rematch, this is reminiscence of the Haglar/Hearns days...gotta love it!
Congrats Raiders, you prove to most of us that even when we may have had doubts of getting a chance at the walnut&bronze you made it happen! Your determination, commitment, and passion to achieve have shown us all why you deserved that opportunity but even more so that Raider Nation is still strong and there will be plenty more to come! Thanks again to LK, and the coaching staff for making it a wonderful season.
Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas and a terrific New Year. Especially those serving for our freedom. As Toby Keith would say "... so we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head. "  Happy Holidays and God Bless!

mtfan,

Was not able to make the Stagg, but look forward to seeing you guys next fall. Agree with your game comments for both teams. UWW had alot of players returning this year. Next year Mount will have a ton returning. The goals remain the same, win the OAC , reach the Stagg Bowl, win the Stagg Bowl! :), Merry Christmas to you and a Happy and healthy New Year! +k

Mt Fan:  make sure Theaprof pays up.  Rumor has it that he was seen wearing a new fancy straw hat that cost about 25 credits or so.........
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

HURFMUC

The straw hat i seen him wearing had UWW on the front of it

reality check

Did anyone that watched the ESPN broadcast notice the color guy (Luginbill) was biased?  He was sporting a purple tie.  I can't believe he would so clearly show his support for Whitewater in his wardrobe choice.   :D

I'm paying up--don't worry--and there was not a UWW anything anywhere near me!!  MtFan--look for a PM.

...Further, an average freshman class at Alfred numbers around 500. For fall 2010, 133 of those freshmen were tuition-paying football players. Pep concludes that AU benefits from its football program...

Pep, you sure you don't mean that there were 133 students in all classes?  The way you stated it would mean there were about 400-500 football players at Alfred (or 25% of the enrollment).  It's still a healthy number at 133 out of 2000 students.

AU's largest class of freshman football recruits (133 players in camp) accounted for more than 25% of the freshman class in August 2010. That is NOT to say there are 133 football playing sophomores, 133 juniors and 133 seniors. Obviously, there is attrition. There were 133 freshmen in pre-season camp and I would say about 75 veterans for a total of about 200 football players of an enrollment of about 1900 undergraduates.

Alex Yunevich was lucky to have more than 50 on his teams...and when one of his boys remarked at how many players their opponent had suited up, he quipped, "Yes, but they can only put eleven of them on the field at a time, same as us."

I'd like to thank ALL the student athletes for providing incredible dedication, and entertainment at such a high level for all of us who enjoy you each and every year. To those seniors who will be leaving Mount, You will be missed even moreso and may God Bless you on your future endevors!

RE: this comment{If you have a decent amount of money that can benefit you in several ways such as recruiting. How do you think Mount recruits from Florida (might be contradicting myself but their reputation has a hair to do with it, but not all)?

Not sure when out of in FLA started. My son learned about Mount via word of mouth...from another buddy who was playing at JU {Jacksonville University}...   hmmm...word of mouth from FLA to MN  ...there certainly wasn't much money invested there :-[   I believe it may be a little deeper connections now that people like KeresDad and my son are coaching in FL...but b4 then...pretty sure there wasn't much going on investment wise ???   I've been wrong b4....

"did anyone else watching the Stagg think (and this might just sound absurd) that Coppage ran for a "quiet" 299 yards".

Actually, the "quiet" part to me was the 39 carries- I didn't think it was that many and I wanted more.  As usual for me these playoffs, I sat in the stands and repeatedly called for UWW to pound the rock.  From the opening drive I felt we could run the ball.  At 39 carries and 299 yards, he averaged 7.66 yards per carry.  So take away the 75 yarder- and at 38 carries and 224 yards he averaged 5.9 yards per carry- so take away that 55 yarder, and at 37 carries and 169 yards, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry.

Anybody out there think they could do pretty well with a back that averages 4.6 yards per carry in the national championship game?

Emma, I think any team on any level would do ok in a championship game with a back who averaged 4.6 per carry.

A post from days gone by: [see if you can guess who it was posted by]???

Mt. Union has a big program but it's not about wooing kids for their dollars.  MUC, ONU, BW...all these programs have big more than 120 kids in camp because these schools have desirable football programs to be a part of.  Attrition rates in div. III are high because of a variety of reasons (grades, money, competition).  Coaches don't mind having tons of able bodies in their program because those bodies leave over a four year period.  The point that was being made is that from a fiscal perspective, schools benefit from a no-cut environment because the cost of putting a kid theough your program is far lower than the tuition the school will collect.  But do not make the mistake of thinking that the coaches are trying to woo kids to get that tuition dollar.

thought it was a very compelling post!

Not sure it takes a ton of money to send a couple Graduate Assistant Coaches in a car to Florida to attend Recruiting Fairs

I heard that too, it had a huge set of warhawk feathers in it! I got a phone call during the first quarter of the game from my dad watching on tv saying "who's that guy in your row with the big straw hat and feathers, they just showed him on the TV, is that Theaprof?, i thought he was a Raider fan"  hmmm...LOL ;D

be4uknewit:

I agree with your assessment.  However, there actually are examples (albeit in a slightly different "vein") in DIII where colleges/coaches attempt to entice prospective players for the tution dollar, but in a somewhat different situation and in sports other than football.  By that, I mean, for example, Adrian College was facing a serious situation in declining enrollment this last decade.  Thus, its President and Board of Trustees decided that by adding additional sports at the varisty level i.e. men's and women's hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, and ice skating, the tuition dollar and enrollment both increased, and the cost was "paid back".  Now, of course, this helped because some very wealthy alumni donated the lead gift for the programs and facility, however, by bringing in those numbers of student-athletes and the coaches working for that as well, it, indeed,,  helps bring in that tuition dollar and help sustain the college.

That being said, I realize you are talking about football and that this is a slightly different situation with regards to the exact process and purpose as you mention.   So you are right; I just thought I'd share that aspect in a tangential way to the discussion. :)

UofMUC2006

So just signed up for the board the other night. As a big Mount Union fan and 2006 alum (as my name suggests I'm still not over the name change!) I just wanted to say for my first post congrats to the Purple Raiders on another great season! This was a very good young team this year and next year looks to be a great veteran team.  I can't wait for Purple Bowl VII so Mount can assume it's proper place on top of DIII!  ;D

Congrats to UWW on a great season as well. They've had a great two run and are a great team.
