I have a question for the OAC and especially thr UMU fans out there. Watching the stagg bowl one of ym friends asked me how does Mount get all these kids from florida to come to alliance ohio. My resonse was that they are on national tv every year in the since 2000 I believe except for 04 playing in the stagg bowl, and I am sure the kids see that. Besides that and Garcone being the first one, and by the way probbaly the best player I have ever seen at the D3 level despite WW slowing him down in the 07 stagg bowl.
So you purple raider fans what is the key to it and what ties does LK have to the sunshine state.
Thanks and I hope you all have a happy holiday season.

Not alot of options in the state of FLA. if you don't get that Division 1 scholarship, being on National television surely helps alot though.

RE: FL players at MTU.

#1.  BrowardRaider should respond.  He is a MTU Football Alum from FL.  :)

#2.  I think the lure of National Championships has helped.

#3.  As previously stated, No small college Football in FL.  No Junior or Community College Football (I think there are statues against it in FL Law), No D3 Football or D2 Football.  There are some DIAA teams (Jacksonville U for one).

#4.  Once a few FL players came, they got the ball rolling (word of mouth to friends, teammates, and even probably opponents).

#5.  They have small college recruiting fairs down here and MTU has had a presence at those.

I just started teaching/coaching in FL 3 years ago (career change at 36) and have only coached one year at the HS level so I haven't sent any to OH yet.  My school is brand new this year with no Seniors so next year I may have one or two to reccomend.  :)

There is a local RB who had 690 yards in three games this year and then blew his knee out.  He had Verbals from Georgia Southern and YSU but I think Georgia Southern withdrew theirs.  Maybe on his visit to YSU he can swing by Alliance...  :)

Just to clarify, Garcon was definitely not the first Raider originally from FL as you eluded to.  He might be the first really big name you remember but the year before Garcon joined Mount, there were three linemen from FL.
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)
OAC Runners-Up: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1982, 1941 (Stupid Mount Union!)
MOL Champs: 1952, 1950

When an 18 year old kid or a 20 year old transfer steps onto the campuses for a football visit at Mount and/or WWW, the one thing that gets his attention is the size of the rings on the fingers of the players.  I believe it is a major factor, as all athletes (or I gotta believe a very large percentage) want to flash one of those things at the folks and teammates in the old home town, be it Miami or Mayberry.

While some kid who works his tail off and waits for his shot never gets one. I would not be proud to show off my pine riding ring. Let us all agree Mount's two or in some cases three deep could start just about anywhere.

IMHO, it all started with Ballard when he transfered from Wilmington.

Could depend on how late it is and how cute she is. Pine riding ring comes out if the airline pilot story doesn't work.

I have been coaching in Florida the past 15 seasons and, as a Mount Union alum have attempted to direct several toward Allaince with no success.  The prospect of being one of over 100 incoming first year players in the program each year has been a deterrent to them.  I have been selective of players I encourage to attend UMU because I don't want to waste their time, not the coaching staffs time and resources.  This year I coached a 5'11" 220 pound RB who runs a 4.5, benches 350, and squats nearly 600, but has only played the game a short time.  Due largely to some language barrier issues his grades are not going to allow him an opportunity to play DI or possibly DII for two years.  He is the type of kid who can succeed at UMU immediately.  The player MW is referring to is a remarkable athlete and very solid student who qualifies academically, but due to some injury concerns may not get an opportunity at a DI school.  These are the type of "slip through the crack" kids Mount Union has built its success on.  Once the DI recruiting scene levels out I'm hoping they will take a look at Mount or other DIII schools where they can continue their educations and football careers.

Uh-Oh.....press conference at noon today in Columbus.  Gene Smith (OSU AD) is going to speak about "NCAA Rules Violations" concerning the football team.  Apparently, several (8-10) players, including Pryor, Posey, Herron, Brewster, have been accused of using autographs as payment to a local tatoo parlor.......stay tuned.
