This is week 5 of our winter vacation ,,one more after this. Our friends think we are crazy,,they are all in Fla now,,we like to ski. When you live in NE Ohio you need to learn to enjoy winter,,and since I don't have to recruit any more,,,,we do this.A definite advantage of being old and retired,,or semi retired  ;D ;D

Mount attendance is also hurt on one weekend  because of OHSAA Football playoffs in Canton/Massilon

On another note we had a foot or more of snow up near Buffalo,,and we just happened to be here to ski,,twas a good day !!! ;D ;D ;D

It is difficult to have high attendance for games when in the case of Walsh and Malone, you have your home games at someone else's stadium.  ::)

Yes, we got smashed with 1 1/2-2 feet (with drifts up to 3-4 feet) yesterday afternoon/last evening.  It quit most of today, however, has just started in again with a somewhat light and blowing snow.  Anyway, for those of you who do the "winter sports thing", that is great.  I was getting spoiled with the early thaw, yet, needed to remember that it is...still February. ;D  Anyway, stay safe, stay warm when you ski! :)

Saw that weather on the news.  Just back from Savannah, GA today... spent an extended weekend down there hanging with some buddies who were Rangers stationed at Hunter AAF back in the day.. great weather, great town... and now back in the cold.  Was 78 there this weekend.

And you play teams nobody ever heard of. I'm sure it will improve when they start playing Tiffin, NOT

Keep smiling Saintsfan and I'll think about you when I get to Bikeweek in Daytona a week from Saturday ;D

My wife and I love Savannah.  Glad you had a good time.  I was hoping she and I could sneak a trip in down there next month, however, unfortunately, it doesn't look like that will happen. :(

At the NFL combine,  the WR's go though their drills on Sunday. I am anxious to see how Cecil stacks up against the rest of the guys. Mel Kiper picks him to be the #5 receiver in the Draft, but a good performance at the Combine is a must to even be in that conversation, IMHO. :)

There are pictures posted now from that trip, 70s... you'll see what I mean when I say that I've got a couple pretty good stories to tell from the weekend.

Here's the first Tampa Area "Signee" for Mount Union this year:

Northside Christian's Jimmy Van Deilen signs with Mount Union

I don't remember hearing about him during the season, but on MaxPreps it shows:

QuoteJimmy Van Deilen was named to Florida's South All-State team. The North-South All-State game will be played in Sebring, Fl on Dec. 22.

QuoteJimmy Van Deilen was named Florida Athletic Coaches Association and Florida Dairy Farmers Association Dist 14 1A Player of the Year. Jimmy was also nominated as offensive utility player for the FACA All-State team and game. This will be NCS's second straight FACA Player of the Year award, last year Chris Culbreth won the award. Congratulations Jimmy!

The other local QB who was looking at Mount Union last fall is headed to Pace University.  Never heard of that one, but the article does say:

QuoteBeeker is receiving a financial package from Pace based on athletics and academics.

...whatever that means.  :)

reality check

Rough day defending Division III athletics for me today.  I found myself arguing with posters here on an Arizona high school sports thread about the "D3 Stigma" only to find that most of the "respected" posters are as clueless as I had feared about Division III athletic programs.

The second incident was reading some of the mindless responses to a story posted on Yahoo about CalTech finally breaking their conference losing streak.  The ignorance of most knows no bounds.

I guess I should expect nothing less and know better but I get ticked when everyone has an opinion and no one has a clue to base that opinion on.  AZ, for example has 3 Div. I programs, 4 or 5 JUCO's and no NAIA/D2/D3 options.  The state of Ohio is truly fortunate to have 41 4-year colleges that offer football.  21 Division 3 schools alone is something to be proud of.

Thank goodness for Division III and its fans.

reality check:

Good post and, without a doubt, that is frustrating.  It never ceases to amaze me how so many people in states that don't have DIII football schools think they know so much about college football, its history and the current state, yet they have no idea whatsoever what they are talking about when it comes to these aspects.  Sometimes, an air of arrogance comes across, while other times it is simply an air of stupidity (or perhaps both).  Anyway, in those situations and as you have already said, all one can do is discuss with and share with them what the reality with regards to DIII football, that it is exciting, it has a significant history to the college game (as most of their own now DI schools started out that same way) and so they'll be enlightened and knowlegable.  Some of them need to know that DIII football is not "glorified high school football" because there are many, many instances where very good high school football players are not quite good enough to play at any level beyond, including DIII.  Sorry you have to encounter that, but I guess we've all experienced that as well.  Yet, like you, deep down, I always have the satisfaction and enjoy the fact that I know more than they do and particularly when they "don't have a clue". ;D ;) 8-) :)
