An unfortunate comment was made to my son and a couple of teammates the other day by a former Mt. Union player. I do not feel it is indicative of how the program really feels however. This ex-player first of all stated that in 2008 he started and was all conference at WR. He actually did not and only caught 4 balls. He also stated that schools such as Otterbein are a waste to D3 football and should just give it up since they are so bad and basically that Otterbein and programs like theirs stink as do their players and that no one at Otterbein would even play at The Mount.

Proud of my kid and his teammates who just walked away but I am sure not how most of you would like the Mount to be represented.

Bad apples in every bunch.  Sorry your kid had to hear that, but impressed that he was able to be the "mature" one in the situation.

They said they could tell it was someone who could just not handle playing college football period. My kid has endured a lot. He is at his 3rd college. Was on scholarship at both Syracuse and EKU before coming to Otterbein and considered Mt. Union at one point, after battling injuries for a couple of years he is hoping for a season of good health.

Son's comment.
"it does not really matter what this guy thought, only what I know."

Sounds like your son has his head on straight.  Tell him this Mount grad wishes him the best for the upcoming season, and let him know the guy he ran into does not represent the attitudes of the vast majority of Purple Raiders.

Rscl70 and I (and Coach Kehres) are from an era when Mount Union was pathetic and a disgrace to small college footfall and when we scheduled Hiram for Homecoming so we could party. What goes around comes around, but sorry from another alum. Nothing but respect for Westerville Downtown HS sorry Otterbien.

When I read this the first thing I thought was "I bet this kid didn't even play."  From my time at Mount it always seemed that the guys on the field were respectful.  It was the guys who thought they should be on the field and weren't that were jerks sometimes.  Some kids are just too immature to handle being the star in HS and then standing on the sidelines in college.  Glad your son was the better man in this case.  Best of luck to him.

Bein_86,

You are no doubt proud of your son and his handling a tough situation. There are always those who do not
uphold the reputation of a great program by the thoughless comments they make often to raise their own
standard. Coach Kehres has always instilled in his players to respect all the schools they play, but sometimes
they are those who missed that during they time a Mount. :)

Thank you all for your comments. I know that the high majority of Mount alumni are respectful. I am not sure this young man even played more than a year or two and therefore the message was missed from Coach K.

We are all aware that there are two dominant programs at the D3 level. No secrets there, but the joy of playing the game, the lessons learned and the toughness it takes to compete are experienced at all the schools. These experiences are then  parlayed into the balance of their lives. Therefore, it is worth all these young men to play such a great game.

Plus some of the other players at other schools are pretty good. I feel that my son Trey is one of those. Maybe not the best, but certainly worthy of donning a football uniform, even if it is not a Raider one. Although, it would have been a honor for him to have worn the Purple.

He has had a lot of injuries since high school but was darn good player coming out of high school, good enough for a full ride and plenty of offers (now time to get off my soap box), and has a pretty nice highlight video on youtube. Sorry for the rant.

Here's to a great f 2011 football season for the OAC and bringing the AASB trophy back to Ohio where it belongs.

Not sure if anyone's posted yet. Jason Trusnik is expected to sign a two year deal with the Dolphins.

......from one Flaming Pile to another.  I wish him well, from the OAC standpoint, just too bad it's the Bungles.

On the other issue......it's too bad that you can't control the mouths/minds of 200+ "nearly adults" and how they speak to others.  The vast majority of the players at Mount are respectful of ALL opponents, because that's how they are coached.  This young man apparently played a couple of years and then quit the program.  That says enough to me.  Talk to the kids who stuck it out for four years, worked their butts in the off-season, and got a degree.  They will be more representative of UMU.  Our son is one of those kids......he respected every school each Saturday.  Now, there were some games he looked forward to more than others from a playing-time standpoint..... ;)

One day into camp and the always respectful Kyle Miller has a huge opportunity open up for him.  The Jags current LS is starting the year on the PUP list with a back injury.  I believe that Kyle is the only LS in camp for the Jags at this time.

Also, Cecil signed a 4 year deal and participated in the Jags first workouts today.  Terms were not disclosed, but I'm sure he got a nice bonus for his high level of respect.

Respectfully yours,

Those players like your son is who my son played against last year. Respectful.
