Thank you!  I was wondering if anyone would "catch" that phrase and you did. :)  Like you, that is one of my favorite western movies also.  There are a lot of great lines in that movie as you know.  Although I've seen it "a million" times, I always enjoy watching it (say, for example, some late Saturday evening at home after the football games are done on TV ;)) and my wife always gives me "the look" ::) ;D when I start rattling off the various famous lines from the movie as she has heard them from me "a million times before".  Anyway, I just thought the line about perseverence fit with the football topic we were discussing.

Happy holidays to you and yours and also to everyone here on this board.

Time for my Annual Review of the Two Deep Stagg Bowl Depth Chart for Mount Union:

Offense 1st Team:
2 Seniors - RG Ekkens, WR Brown
9 Juniors - WR Collins, WR Moore, LT Tate, LG Mattox, C Knisely, RT Forbus, QB Piloto, FB Simon, HB Murray

Offense 2nd Team:
2 Seniors - C Ekkens, FB Ryder
6 Juniors - WR Denton, WR Stewart, WR Mathie, RT Modrak, QB Seaman, HB Skilliter
2 Sophomores - LG Goble, RG Winn
1 Freshman - LT Goff

Defense 1st Team:
5 Seniors - DE Favazzo, LB Smith, LB Carbonell, FS Ferrara, CB Jordan
5 Juniors - CB Scott, SS Driskill, S Nicholls, DE Dieuseul, DT Orteca
1 Sophomore - DT Fechko

Defense 2nd Team:
2 Seniors - FS West, CB, Alwardt
5 Juniors - SS Riley, S Briggs, DT Modrak, LB Teague, LB Allen
2 Sophomores - CB  Woodard, DE Thomas
2 Freshman - DE Rosalva, DE Mahoney

More losses on Defense (Both starting LBs, 1st and 2nd Team FS, and 1st and 2nd Team CB) than Offense (Starting RG (and backup C) Ekkens and WR Brown).  If Piloto can eliminate mistakes and/or Seaman stay healthy for the entire year, it looks like the Offense will be stacked next year.

Defense will still have Scott, Driskill, Dieseul returning for Senior Leadership, and I'm sure the rest will be ready to step up make their own mark for the Raiders.

I don't know if any of the Seniors have eligibility left, but looks like another reloading year.  The Future is Bright!

great info-i was going to ask that question anyway.
looking ahead-mt union lost some solid talent on offense(god i loved watching #36 block like a lineman) and lose some solid stout players on defense-2 thoughts
can anyone get the same outlook on uww? and a quick look at the o-line shows we got a c/guard to replace but 3 all conference lineman return(2 first teamers and 2 made all region) certainly given that its a long season(15 games yikes)-wouldnt hurt to get some depth-i think oline group needs to be 7-8 deep not 5 like this year

a quick recap of the stagg bowl shows turnovers/field position battle/special team play/inability to run were major factors in the loss

one more random thought... draftinsider.net website has pegged correctly where both shorts and garcon were going to be drafted have nary a mention of coppage-only two mentions of any D3 players- if 12 teams have shown interest in coppage-it doesnt look like any were serious? the site seems solid and informative-easy to search on individuals/and or conferences and teams

I know it is a bit late but the game still stings. First of all Congratulations to Whitewater. Regardless of how it was done - it was nontheless done. As much as I want to say the TD was giftwrapped - UWWs D made a great play to cause the big, huge, monumental TO. Mounts D: hats off. That was a stellar performance against a very solid UWW offense. During the break until next season I will be wondering about a few things from Stagg VII:
1. 4th and 10 and the pass is for 5?
2. The non-call on a clear helmet-to-helmet on the above referenced play - dude launched head down at the head from 5 yards out.
3. Why, according to the announcers, UWW was more suited to the weather than Mount.
4. Why do Wisconsinites love the "championship belt" so much? I hate it when Rogers does that TD dance, but to have an actual belt??
5. Why can't ESPN find a host that can pronounce the names of at least half the players?
6. Where was Pam Ward?
7. Who designed UWWs new unis? Were they rejected by Oregon?

Oh well that and many others. To UWW same time - same place - next year. To Mount: 11 in 12! To all the others: you have the next 8 months to break down film and prepare. You can either use it, take your shot and make it count - or stock up on kleenex and sad stories about why UWW and Mount should move to DII. The choice is yours. Its DIII there are no excuses or stacked polls - the games are all on the field. UWW won and is the Champion of that there is no question. We can question the manner in which it was won but they are the only team that is 15-0. Hats of to the Warhawks until next year.

You two are giving me a woodie ... so few of my younglings get my movie references.

Found the champagne bottle that I bought for Da Game in my freezer tonight ... fortunately it didn't explode, although it did erupt once I opened it.

Enjoy your holidays!

LK Quote from the Alliance Review, that I didn't think about during the game, but when I read this article, it clicked on a lightbulb for me:

"Their punter was fantastic. He had some high punts and we were unable to get any returns on them," said Kehres. "We started once at the five (after Jordan's interception) and were around the 20 or tighter several other times."

On top of UWW's great defensive play, the UWW punter didn't give Denton a chance to return any of the punts.  They were High, Booming punts that allowed UWW to cover efficiently.  Field Positions seemed to always be in UWW favor in Purple Stagg VII.

[EDIT 8:10pm]
Found the Drive chart and did the average.
UWW Average Starting Yard Line:  UWW 43 yard line
UMU Average Starting Yard Line:  UM 22 yard line

UWW skewed a bit with the UMU turnover on their own 1 yard line.  If you take that one out of the equation, UWW Average Start was still the UWW 35 yard line.

I actually liked the look of the Silver Numbers, trimmed in Purple.  Also liked the font used on them.

Didn't understand why the ESPN announcer's kept saying that UWW was in All Purple though, looked like All Black Unis to me.

+k for the use of skewed! I am not actually going to wonder where Pam was - just saying that she may have been a step up from the crew that called the game. As to the unis - I have a color issue (fine, I am color blind!) but the numbers looked babyblue. I am old school - I like Mounts all purples (the ones from 08) and the same year pants with the black jersey. I like UWWs old unis better as well - not to mention Oregon and Marylands old uniforms better than the new ones. Just not a fan of the Under Armour and Nike and whomever else "upgrades".

This was my third trip with the family to the Stagg Bowl to watch UWW play UMU.  At the first tailgate experience (2009), I was pleased to meet many UMU fans, who were really classy, down to earth football fans.  Last year (2010), we meet a really nice group in downtown Roanoke during the Christmas festival and then again at the tailgate.  This year 2011 was no exception, although the Friday night game did not allow any of us to go downtown Friday night, although I did meet some UMU tailgaters who were as wet as I was.    I have a tremendous amount of respect for UMU, its players and coaches as well as the fans and just want to say that I truly hope we see each other again next year in Salem.

If other d3 fans think that the road to Salem is easy, or that one school or type of school has an advantage, they are wrong.  There is one secret, you have to work hard, not just during the season but year round.  You have to study, watch film and lift all year long.   My son moved into the starting line-up this  year and I have watched him become entirely devoted to making sure he is fully able to contribute to his team's success.   There are no scholarships, there was no special recruitment.   Jealousy makes people say irresponsible things and I am sure people said similar things about Augustana when they had their run, LaCrosse when they had their success and we all know the have been saying it about UMU for almost two decades.  While most of it is directed at UMU and UWW these days, it is still out of out of place and shows a true lack of intelligence.

Ok, off my soapbox.  I just want to tell my d3board friends from Mount that they had one hell of a season, with an outstanding defense and that they 100% deserved to be at Salem this year and I hope to see you all there next year.   Happy Holidays and have a healthy and properous New Year.

NFL might expand ban on launching, helmet hits

BTW, I'm not saying this caused the Raiders to lose, just posting a relevant article I saw.  UWW Defense caused the Raiders to lose.

This is a great post and for once I fully agree with a warhawk fan(LOL :D). My son was in his second year as a starter this season and because of a scheduling glitch, had a practicum and a night class this semester. His day started very early so he could get into the weight room and watch film BEFORE his teaching assignment, which got him back to school in time for practice and then class on top of his involvement in FCA and of course, homework. Hats off to all D3 athletes who have to work hard in the classroom, in order to play a game they love.. Not getting to Salem was a huge disappointment for the Cardinals, who hope to meet both  of the "purples" next year. Congrats to both UWW and UMU for getting it done on the field for the past seven years, and here's hoping NCC get their shot at proving themselves on the field in 2012. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

WarhawkDad,

Great post +k. Through the past seven years, several OAC posters including myself have shared many thoughts on the Raiders and Warhawks. There is great respect for each program and those who support it as evidenced by many of your posts. IMHO, the Warhawks played their best defensive game against the Raiders and came out on top in a close one. I have no doubt both schools will be again in the playoffs in 2012! :)
