Off of DIII football but football just the same....Congrats to Kent State's win on the road against Rutgers! First time they beat a ranked team.

Finally a 4 quarter game.  Both teams played well.  Berg was impressive.  Their defense was plum worn out in the second half.  Mt. looked a lot faster in the second half.   Not a good game for Burke but he got the job done.  I was impressed by the Berg QB.  He can only get better.  I would not want to play Berg if they make the playoffs.  Mt. has a good running game this year, big difference from last year.   I thought the middle was open most of the day but Burke was running for his life most of the first half.  Berg had a lot of pressure on Burke.  Great game.  I wonder how long Hallett will stay at Berg?

Good observations on the game. Heidelberg came to play and as was mentioned were worn out in the second half. The Raiders should have scored 2 more TD's but did not convert in the red zone. K. Burke has great faking ability. I was watching the OSU game and B. Miller did the same great faking hand off plays. Hats off to Coach Hallet. I see them in the playoff and they will win some games.

B-W will be ready, but IMHO, Heidelberg has more talent. We may see the same type of game next Saturday! The Raider D was good again, but too aggressive according to the Refs. Anyone heard the status of LT A. Tate. Hope he can return! :)

Has anybody ever come up with a comprehensive list of LK's former players and where they are coaching? Jason Hall finally broke Massillon's losing streak against McKinley today.

VK used to email out a Newsletter and one of the issues had a list of Former UMU players that are currently coaching but I didn't save a copy.

Off hand I can think of the following College Head Coaches:

Matt Campbell - Toledo
Eric Raeburn - Wabash
Mike Hallett - Heidlelberg
Dean Paul - ONU
Mike Siriani - Washington & Jefferson
Don Montgomery - Emory & Henry

Raider68:

Another good win for your Mount.  I must admit that I thought Heidelberg just might have the chance to pull the upset.  They are tremendously improved as you and your OAC colleagues here have already mentioned and discussed, yet not quite there yet in regards to getting at Mount's level.  At any rate, with UWW's loss yesterday (as the season progressed, I personally didn't see they realistically getting back to the Stagg Bowl), I think it is clear that Mount Union has the inside track now.  Although obviously anything can happen and there are 2-3 teams out west and south that might be the tough challengers, I see Mount as now really being the favorite and perhaps most likely to regain their national championship title.

I hope the weather might stay similar to what it was yesterday - at least it was gorgeous here in Michigan for the games.  A little cold but very comfortable if you dressed correctly.  Yet, we all know how November usually is for the playoffs, so we'll just have to see.  Congrats to Mount and best of luck the rest of the way.

I do not post often, but I am moved to write something about the horrible ref's at the Heidi game.
Their first drive started right in front of me.  I have never seen such a mugging as that which the Heidi O line put on the Mount D ever.  With no flags!  I believe some of the following penalties against Mount were out of frustration. I saw leg whipping, chop blocks, and take downs the WWE would be proud of.
None the less, congratulations to Heidi for a good game and thanks for the playoff prep.

Ouch.  Just watched the play where South Carolina RB Lattimore blows out his right knee.  That was ugly.

Sickening. I saw the replay one time during a lunch break. I feel badly for the kid. Nice show of respect by Tennessee though.

How about the elbow thrown at the head of the Heidelberg return man out of bounds on the kickoff after the off sides penalty on the previous kickoff? That happened right in front of me and was one of the most classless plays I have ever seen on a football field. If the officials are letting them play on one side, take advantage of it when your offense is on the field, not by taking a cheap shot on the other teams quarterback. That was what I meant by lack of composure penalties. I know you get some when you play aggressively, but in my opinion they got smacked in the mouth and didn't handle it very well.

I watched the replay yesterday.  Quick thoughts:

I was very impressed with Brooks the 2nd time around.  He looked better Saturday than what I saw at ONU.  I liked the way he doesn't go down at first contact and always seemed to squirm, push and lunge ahead for at least 3 yds even when he's stopped at the LOS.  It reminded me of Jamal Robertson a little.  He always did that.  He was a smaller guy, but was SO freaking strong.  Brooks reminded me of that some.

To me the biggest surprise was the Berg D.  I think it was more or less expected that their offense would move the ball and have some level of success (at least greater success than anyone else to date).  But I thought their defense would be overmatched a little bit.  They've had a good offense for several years, but they were so bad on defense.  They've definitely made great strides on that side of the ball.  They made Mount work.  They got some good pressure on Burke.  They might not have a good enough defense to beat UMU yet, but I agree w/ HScoach, they have a good enough one to make the playoffs and win a game or two.

I liked that Hallett took the ball when he won the coin toss.  Take the ball, march down the field and score, give your guys confidence.  We've seen that backfire tons of times with a quick 3 and out followed by a quick Raider TD, but I give him credit for not playing it conservative.  It worked out, they scored and then forced a 3 and out and ended up battling the entire half.

The Raiders may not have a Kmic, but they certainly appear to be deep at RB.  Lattimore and Skilliter did a nice job going for 95 and 97 yds, respectively.  I'm sure LK isn't a huge fan of Skilliter carrying it 19 times and playing corner, but he did and he ran hard.  Have to wonder if Simon is dinged up again maybe.  He had those 2 carries for 18 yds and that was it.  I would think if he was 100% he would have taken a few of those Skilliter carries.  And much like OSU, you could argue that the best RB on the team is the QB.  Man is Burke shifty.  He just makes guys look silly sometimes.

I hope Antonio Tate is okay.  He has several weeks to heal up so hopefully he'll be good to go in a month at worst.  Fingers crossed.

I not only watched the replay on Saturday at 1AM, I watched again today at noon. Don't know what that really means - maybe I had to verify that Mount played Heidelberg and not some other team. Anyway, I have some observations.
1. Berg is good - better than I thought coming in and better than I thought after the 1AM replay. I keep wondering what happens if Cartel Brooks doesn't get banged up?
2. Bergs D got a ton of pressure on Burke. The o-line is gonna have to step it up a few notches in the coming weeks and playoffs.
3. Mounts D seemed unable to get steady pressure on Berg. A few times yes - but it seemed that when push came to shove the young Berg o-line held its own. I was not expecting that to hold up for 4 qtrs but it did.
4. I saw some serious secondary issues. Maybe the coverage was more lax due to weather - IDK - but a strong passing team with good weather could be trouble.
5. Burke is a tough nut to crack. Kid is elusive and can flat out play.
6. Hallett did everything right. Took ball first and was aggressive throughout.

And now.....for every other school out there with a down program for say...oh IDK 25 YEARS (ATTN: HIRAM) quit complaining! The OAC is buzzing about Heidelberg! Look where they were 5 years ago - and they locked horns and stood their ground against Mount on Saturday. A turn around is possible if you commit to it. Wipe away the tears, hike up the skirt and commit to getting it done instead of whining that "Mount should move up", "we need a different conference", "we struggle to compete due to our dedication to academics" (took that one straight from a Hiram speaker at an alumni event). And until you do commit - stop sending me alumni material to donate for athletics! Soapbox closed - enjoy Frankenstorm!

I just skimmed the play-by-play of the Musky/ONU game.  What a tough loss for the Fish.  Punt it away only to their own 32 yd line w/ 5+ min left up 19-14.  ONU runs it easily ripping off 8, 10 yd chunks a few plays in a row to get down to the 1.  Muskies stuff em on 2nd and 3rd down from the 1 only to give up a 5 yd TD pass on 4th and goal with 33 sec to go to lose 20-19.  Musky is the most competitive 1-7 team around.  Luckily they have Cap and Etta to finish up so maybe they can grab a couple wins that've been escaping them all season it seems.
