Not to look ahead but........(well yah I am)...

I was planning on having our annual get together NEXT Friday before the semi-final.  It's kind of been our tradition.

Besides.......my wife won't give me permission to go this Friday.  We have "holiday socializing" on the agenda.   :-[

On another note....any Alliance guys go to the little Italian (I think) restaurant that doesn't seat many people, but has amazing food from what I hear?  Can't think of the name. Only a few years old. No liquor license so you bring your own wine.  I have heard great things......

Ok, we'll shoot for next friday.
You may be refering to Vesuvios out east of town, has good food and believe he has his liquor license now. I know the owner there pretty well so if that's the place you want try, let me know.

THAT'S the place!  Thanks Mt. Fan.

F3DB - there are many places that allow you to bring your own wine/beer/alcohol.  Usually it's because they don't have their own liquor license.  The usually charge you a corkage fee ($5-$10), and provide the glasses, corkscrew, etc...

So we will plan on next Friday, provided of course that Mount finds a way to take care of business this weekend.

Prediction - UMU - 48
                  WID - 14 ish

I'd be interested (while this probably isn't the time yet as there are likely at least 2 more rounds of UMU games) at some point having someone on here who is in he know rank the Mount Union teams of the last 2 decades. For instance, how does this year's team seem to measure up with other years? Is there even a way to rank them in this manner? Obviously all of the teams have been superior to the rest of D3, but there have to have been years where the team just looked like more of a machine than others.

I am not sure why I bring this up now but it's something I've thought about as an outsider and I've never been associated with D3 without UMU being the prevailing force.

pg04,

This is a very tough question to answer, with all the great players and teams at Mount,
this year's team, IMHO, has a few characteristics that may make them different from some of the others.

For 2012,

- a hungry group of seniors seeking their one and only title possibility.

- A coaching staff that this year moved the best players into key positions, defense to offense

- A proven player going both ways and performing well in each.

- A talented sophomore QB that will rank as one of the best at Mount Union when he finishes,
but as a sophomore the "best" for a 1st year QB, IMHO

- Finally, the most consistent Raider team in awhile.

With those factors, this team will be measured against the rest with title "11", until then there
is more work to be done.

+k for the excellent response! I guess my curiosity comes from the fact that, as an outsider who has not actually watched them play, the scores of the games this year have been very impressive, and this seems like one of the more "machine-like" UMU teams in a while.

As you say, we really won't know definitively until the end of the season. The playoff competition has yet to be much to speak of, and as an "East Regioner" I don't think Widener is going to give the Purple Raiders any sort of tussle, either. Although the Hobart people would much rather be playing the Tommies, I think that Hobart would have actually gave them the tussle that Widener will not.

skunks:

Thanks for the follow-up info.  I wasn't aware of that.  I guess some of the places I've been to, even if they didn't have a liquor license, don't allow that.  Obviously, the legal parameters allow liquor to be on the premesis even if no license is available. Anyway, that is a good situation for patrons and probably cheaper, too!  The restuarant you mention does sound like a neat place to have a meal and converse with colleagues about the game. :)

I don't have the time right now to write out the entire list, but I will when I get a chance.  Omitting the 2012 team of course since book hasn't been written.

Little appetizer to hold you over:

Best team ever:  1997 - by a wide margin.  Led by 4-year starter Bill Borchert, best QB to ever play at Mount.  His senior year was 61 TD's / 2 INT's.   One of the INT's bounced off the receivers hands and should have been an easy catch.  Was a great runner too, but didn't need to.

2nd best ever?   Have to give this one some thought.  Obvious potentials are 1993 are 2008.

Least talented to win a title:  1998 - easy choice.  very young team lead by a stud MLB (Jason Hall) and a bunch of kids that would end up really good.  Won a ton of close games that they had no business winning.  Shouldn't have even won the conference except for great INT at BW by J Hall.

Best team to not win a title:  2007 - hard to 4-peat, let alone against a team the quality of Whitewater.  Especially when they finally had an offensive coordinator with an ounce of creativity to compliment a great RB.  35 degress and freezing rain didn't help our chances of holding onto the ball either.  Ugly night on all accounts

2nd best to not win a title:  1992 - dominated LAX on the road in frozen conditions but done in by 5 turnovers.  Was the precursor to the focus of the 1st title team in 1993.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Thanks HScoach. +K. I know it's kind of a tall order to ask, but I'm getting a lot of info I didn't have before! 1997 pre-dates my enrollment to D3-land so it's good to read about it.

No matter how many times you see that stat line, it is a head shaker. Incredible.

That is amazing. I can imagine many DBs had nightmares preparing for him and after having played him. Despite openly having complained about the homogeneity at the top of D3 football, I am constantly in awe of the great players that have come through this great program.

And playing Case Western definitely qualifies as a pre-season scrimmage.   They play a crap schedule and most years would be very lucky to be above .500 in the OAC.

This is a one-year deal after George Fox moved out their program reboot from 2013 to 2014 (screwing everyone in the NWC in the process).  Linfield scrambled to fill the gap and Case Western was nice enough to take on the game (at CWU).  Linfield is also traveling to Hardin-Simmons and hosting Cal Lutheran next season so if CWU is "scrimmage" material I'm not going to complain.

The new little Italian place is called Bliss and it is on Union right next door to the fire station and behind Walgreen's.  I didn't know if people wanted to do this week, since, according to some, we will be traveling next week if we win. ;)
