Okay, Raider68, what is your prediction for your Mount Union Saturday?  I don't think they will have a problem with Wilmington- the only "guess" is what the margin of victory will be most likely. ;)

I say Wilma by 3 TDs.

(OMG - I haven't dropped acid in 40 years, and am still having flashbacks! ;D)

Mr. Ypsi

Just checked the UMU webpage - they didn't play Wilmington in 1973.  WHEW!  Since I would have had no way of knowing an MUC score in 1973, if they HAD lost to Wilma by 3 TDs that year I would have gotten worried. :o

But it did feel down right weird to see their record as 3-6, and their last winless conference season.

formerd3db,

It will be a real nail-biter for the first 2 minutes, then I think the Raiders will pull away. It will
a long ride home for Wilmington, IMHO! ::)

Well said ETP and Small but Slow.
Some posters are making arguements against a position that we aren't holding.  I think we agree that the hit, per the rules today, is probably legal.  So let's put that part of this discussion to bed, the flag probably should not have been thrown.
The bigger question we're posing is, "is this a tackling technique that should be encouraged or discouraged"?
For the long term good of the game, this technique should be discouraged.
And Wally, there are exceptions to every rule.  It's unfortunate the Wabash player was injured during a perfectly executed tackle, and that's all there is to your story.
Let's encourage coachs every where to be sticklers in teaching the absolute best and safest tackling techniques possible- for the well being of the players and the future of the game.

Sitting here at my local sports bar and see ESPN airing the national Crossfit games. I'm watching the clean and jerk event and see a name that looked familiar. A quick google confirms that amount Union's own Scott Panchik is apparently one of the top Crossfit athletes in the country.

Yep, he has placed in the top 5 the past two years.  I have been following him on Twitter.

His dad (and now family) are very big into Cross Fit.

Scott was recently a teacher in the Mentor School System and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Mentor HS.  But, he resigned this summer (after the CrossFit Games) and is opening his own CrossFit Gym in Mentor.

Mr. Ypsi:
Hilarious!

Raider68:
Thanks for the reply.  I think you are right...kind of like it was for Hope when we played your Mount Union in the first round playoff game in 2006 in Alliance. ::) :-[ ;)

Probably wouldn't look good, but, sometimes, what can you do?? :o ;D ;)

Yeah, I've never learned how to shorten the links, but bumped into this article this morning.  Look, it was a good, legal hit.  I personally can understand why the flag was thrown.  But the guy for FOXSports who wrote the article is now comparing it to Clowney's play against Michigan last year.  Even this Mount Union fan (and sometime homer!) can't make that comparison!

reality check

I haven't commented until now on the hit but an article touting it as "hit of the year" in college football is laughable.  I think it's gotten more airtime than it deserves on the last three pages of this thread.  If the kid's helmet is strapped on like it should be, we wouldn't even be talking about a penalty or watching the clip.

I told you guys that I emailed him once to explain the Mount blowouts, and that his suggestions (i.e. that they should just move up to Division II, or that they needed to find a tougher league) were not realistic options, right?

He never replied.

Gregg Easterbrook.  In his TMQ column, he often rags on Mount for running up the score (obviously he never reads any game stories, he always just prints the score and says that any team who wins by more than 50 should be ashamed for running up the score, clearly unaware of Mount's generally good sportsmanship in blowouts by playing backups, running the ball, even taking FG's on first down and/or running out of bounds inside the 5) and playing a "weak schedule" (again, obviously pays no attention to the fact that they play in the OAC and have 9 mandated league games; he also talks about them changing conferences as though it's a simple matter, neglecting the fact that the OAC is the most logical home for Mount in all sports, and that even if they could join a conference just for football, where are they going to go?  The WIAC?  CCIW?  MIAC?  How does that work for any of the involved parties?  And what's the guarantee that those will be any tougher on Mount week to week?).
