Congratulations to Kevin Burke. A worthy Gagliardi Award winner in every respect. Obviously was pulling for Cole, but I can't imagine anyone complaining about the choice. Quality guy on and off the field.
CONGRATS to Cole as being a finalist as well! the dude is a stud, smart one at that!
Thanks for that. And the cool thing is that Kevin and Cole and the other finalists are representative of thousands of athletes in D3 that play for the right reasons and do things the right way.  I can't understand why anyone would NOT be a fan of D3!

In truth I thought that it would either be Klotz or McKoy (due to his off-field aspect and tie-in to Newtown, Conn). I really thought it would hurt Burke since he was a Junior. I guess that just shows what a year he had - he won it even though he's a Junior.

Now that all the "hey you are all great guys" moment has passed - Go out and Kick Whitewaters A@@! (A poet!)

I respect UWW, I admire what UWW has done - they are more than worthy and deserving, yet I still hope they get monkeystomped by 60! Roll Raiders! Roll Burke!
IN BURKE WE TRUST! ROLL RAIDERS!!

"Cole Klotz" has to be one of the great linebacker names in history.

Tis a great name - just hope he doesn't play like previous LBs from UWW (specifically Widduch, Raebel, and Rindahl). I really didn't like those guys.

Was checking out the UWW site and have to give a Kudos to thier SID. Mount has a better site then they used to but the ChickenWarhawks have the two-deep for both sides, some great info and some pics of the area for those interested.

In 2011, UWW won the game 13-10. Mount gave a away a touchdown with a fumble on the 5  their yard line.

For 2013, what is the same is that UWW has a huge OL, like NC and Wesley, but a better defense. Winning the LOS is obviously
a key factor for this game but not the only one. Wesley's front defensive 7 were big and fast and did limit K. Burke,
but the Raiders also scored 62 points despite that. An intangible for this game is the fact that this Raider team,
despite being young is well battle tested and does not give up especially their leader. IMHO, the game
could be like the many MTU/UWW games, close with the winning margin not more than 10 pts
or given the favorable weather a higher scoring contest.

Hopefully, ESPN will have decent announcers! :-\

The turnover difference sure does seem to be the key factor in the previous Stagg matchups between these two programs. That's partly what makes this game so interesting is we really don't know what UWW offense will be on display. The ball control, very conservative O seen vs UMHB or the aggressive O seen vs Linfield (for 2 quarters).  I think we know what the Mt O will display.

I am a bit surprised that people think of UWW as "big" this year. I haven't compared rosters but I don't see the UWW D line as big at all, while the O line may be a bit below average O line size at UWW.

I do hope the announcers deliver the broadcast with energy and enthusiasm.
I know people rip Pam W from the 2007 game- but I personally feel she and her broadcast partner at least brought life to the game.

are you insinuating that D3 posters are just using the stereotypes of UWW being huge and Mount being quick, without using facts?  Noooo.  Everyone knows that UWW is huge on the lines, almost pro sized and Mount just can't match up.

These are incredibly different teams from a couple of years ago, the arm chair QB's of D3 should recognize that.  Hell, had Burke replaced the will not be named Mount QB in the second half of 2011, who knows what would have happened.

bleedpurple,

Skunks knows that I have no problem with him, actually the opposite.  If you feel the need to "slice me up, chew me up and spit me out" please go ahead.  UWW got lucky that their run coincided with the worst 3+ years of QB play at Mount in 20 years.  UWW had good teams but I don't think that there could be one Mount fan that would argue Seaman/Piloto were even decent Mount QB's.  2011 is the perfect example, the poor QB play is the difference between UWW scoring enough to win.  If only we could argue about the 2012 Stagg, but your team lost a few too many games.

I really feel bad that if I remind you of a kid you beat up in high school.  I'm sure that was many years ago for you, but it does not surprise me that you want to relive your "glory days."   What a tough guy.  But I'm sure that if you met me, you wouldn't think I was a little kid that you beat up 20 years ago.
So in 2009, when Rocco was 23 of 39 for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns he was one of the worst quarterbacks in the last 20 years of Mount Union football?   Not sure your fellow Mount fans are going to agree with you.

The reality is that each team plays with the players they have available that year, that game, coached by the coaches that are coaching that year.   The weather is whatever it is and the game is won and lost on the field.    The one thing I can say that I learned attending those three Stagg Bowls, 09, 10 and 11, is that Mount Union fans are as equally supportive of their purple team as those of us who support UWW and that a strong 95% of them are class acts and fun to be around and party with downtown and at the tailgate.

Most of us carry that mutual respect onto the Boards.  I know my son who played 4 years at UWW and now coaches there would expect me to behave that way to not diminish that hard work and effort he and his teammates put in to reach the ultimate game in D3 football.

WarhawkDad
Mount has been very blessed at quarterback for 20+ years and yes Rocco and Seaman would rank near the bottom of the QB's during that period according to most Mount followers.  It has been discussed on this board and I do not remember where he was ranked exactly but it was not near the top for sure.

Rocco had a great senior season.     Which was quite surprising as he'd struggled in a backup role as a youngster, butRocco was NOT the pproblem in that Stagg Bowl.    It was fumbles by the RB's in the 4th quarter.     If not for those, Mount wins the Stagg and Rocco is the landslide winner for MVP.
I would not put Rocco at the bottom.   That distinction goes to Piloto, Bruney and Seaman.   Rocco doesn't have a "career" after starting only one season, but I'm confident in saying Mount doesn't lose both of the next 2 Stagg's woth him under center.

The bolded above is a bit offense-centric Coach.  Said another way, if not for the great linebacker play by UWW's defense, Mt wins the Stagg and Rocco is the landslide winner for MVP.
I know you appreciate good defense Coach, those fumbles by the RB's in the 4th quarter didn't just happen.  I specifically remember one that occurred when one of my all-time favorite LB's- Lane "Train" Olson used his wrestling skills and incredible athletic ability to get lower than the low running RB and put his helmet right through the ball.  Fumble.  Those same great LB's were all over Rocco at the end of the game, preventing him from making any late game heroics- that would have resulted in him winning MVP in a landslide.

Congrats to Kevin Burke, one of my three favorite Mt players of the last 7 years.
Now that he has the Award, I assume he'll skip his senior year.

Never meant to imply the defense didn't cause the TO to happen.   I was simply rebutting the statement that Rocco was crap and the main reason Mount lost that Stagg Bowl.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

The numbers seem to favor Mount, but the passing defense is problematic for the Raiders.  Another classic in the works.

Go Raiders! 22.12.13

Dr. Acula

I know I made a joke during the NCC game that the next good kickoff return would the Raiders first.  I knew they hadn't had a single long return this year. I did not, however, realize they were almost the worst kickoff return avg in the nation!  Granted it seems like an up man fielded about 1/3 of the kicks I saw, but still.  Never would have said they were that low.

Congratulations to Kevin Burke for winning the Ghoulardi trophy.  It's only fitting that a boy from Cleveland should win a trophy named after a Cleveland icon.

HS Coach, did you just get undercut?

Congrats to KB, a well deserved honor.

Congrats to UMU and UWW for another title run. Should be a great game. For the 1st time in quite a while, I'll not be in Salem and will miss the experience of the Stagg Bowl. Safe travels to all.
