will we see another Westerbrook (is that the right name) article on how UMU runs up the score?

Desertraider

Sorry but looking at the boxscore I see that Cap won the all important Time of Possession battle! Cap had the ball 32:01 to Mounts 27:59.

Looks like Berg is pulling away from Otters late. And ONU giving JCU all they can handle. JCU just scored to go ahead 17-10. Anyone think these close ones for Berg and JCU help them more when they play Mount? Just curious.

Close. It's Easterbrook. Gregg Easterbrook....or shall I say EasterHACK.

Home from Bexley and here's what I saw (before I bailed):

Capital is really bad defensively.  Their lone bright spot was a 4th and short stop inside their 10 on the game's opening drive.  The problem was that the utter ease with which Mount got there in just a couple plays was a sign of things to come.  730 yards and 75 points later it's easy to see how Cap gave up all those points to Musky.

Mount played really well defensively.  Longwell was on crutches in street clothes so Iske ran the option attack.  He looked like a freshman. Plus Cap's scheme is a perfect match up for Mount's strengths.  Always good against the run, the option also allows the D to show off its quickness in space.  When they know someone back there is getting the ball they can just swarm the backfield.  It was ugly.  Cap couldn't move the ball at all.  60 total yards?  8 first downs (and 3 of those were on their first drive aided by flags)?  Can't complain about much on D with those stats.

Offensive line did a great job.  Burke had all day to throw.  And they averaged 10.4 ypc while piling up almost 500 yards on the ground.

Williams looked good again today busting a couple more long TD's.  One was called back, but he still went over 100 yards on all of 6 carries.  He doesn't have the elusiveness of Mitchell, but he's a threat to go all the way any time he touches it.  He can run.

Not to be overlooked, Mitchell, Nemeth and Johnson all looked good too.  Better than good.  All three averaged 10+ ypc! ran for 80+ yds and scored.  The depth at RB and WR is embarrassing.

Burkes relieved Burke to start the 2nd half.  I didn't see any other QB play but I left before the end.

I noticed Josh Stewart got in at safety in the 1st half.  Hargrove got in at WR early. I also didn't see Gainer much today.  Clark started and played more than other games this yr.

I agree with desertraider.  Today tells us very little about Mount.  I think it was a couple years ago that HScoach (?) called Cap "Wilmington in different uniforms" or something like that.  I question how much progress has been made since then.

That JCU score confuses me.  They missed a couple FG and blew a TD and another drive with fumbles, but still.  This is the same ONU defense that Berg put 69 on the board with the longest drive being 2 min.  I figured JCU would hang 45-50 on them without much trouble.  Of course I also thought BW would score at will on Musky and that didn't happen either.

ONU confuses me. They could play JCU tight (and did) and turn around the next week and get hammerd by Otterbein. All I am hoping is that whatever ONU did to minimize Meyers...Mount can replicate. I gotta tell you that JCU and Myers worry me. For some reason I keep seeing the ESPN break in on live coverage to talk about Mount losing to ONU in regular season...except its JCU. Although I believe that the loss to ONU in that game is what got Mount that national title. We shall see.

desertraider,

JCU is good and the Raiders will be ready, but I was surprised how that JCU had as much as they could handle at ONU today. At this point in the season, I do not see JCU ready to handle Mount. This year's Raiders are improved in all categories vs. 2013. If both teams are 9-0, it will be a great game, but Mount now has a much better running game to balance the passing attack. But as you said, we shall see! :)

I agree that Mount is much better this year. The offense does not concern me at all. They will score points with all of those weapons. It is better (balanced) in both passing and rushing. It is not a few good WRs, or a single great WR - but a stable of really good targets for Burke. It reminds me of Mounts last title run with Collins, Denton, Moore, Stewart and then Meacham and Nicholls. Namdar, Scott, Wilkinson are really good. Add in Meacham and Gainer and it is as solid as it gets. The run game is loaded as well and very balanced. What troubles me with Mount is the D. This is why I hate games like Capital, Musky, Etta, etc. I really want to see what Mount does with Berg and ONU from the defensive side of the ball. We all saw Mount get picked apart on D last year by Berg, JCU, Wesley, North Central and then humiliated by UWW. Until I see the D turn in a dominant performance against a solid team...I am going to be concerned.

It's midway through the 2nd qtr and the thing I'm most interested in is listening to Nyejel Thomas do color for 91.1 tonight.  He's doing a good job.  Giving insight based on his knowledge of both the schemes and the personnel.  Easily the best color guy I've heard on WRMU.

(The reason I'm focused on this is because it's 50-0 already)

That has got to be brutal to fill that time.

JCU is up 31-0 at half.  It's clear.  This season is Mount, JCU....and everyone else in a completely separate class.  We'll see what JCU can do in Alliance, assuming there are no stumbles and everyone stays healthy.

Looks like we may need to rethink this comment.

I was concerned about the Defense and the DL line all of last year, and we will see how much improvement has been made
from last year when the Raiders play the better teams. A sign of hope is that last year, the Raiders were not very good on
defense even with the lower tier teams. Without having looked at the comparisons stats through 4 games (2014/2013) I see
improvement. It does not hurt to have a full time DC coordinator this year vs. last either. The team in 2014 has improved in other
areas, so we will see what happens against ONU, Heidelberg and later JCU. It is unlikely so far, IMHO, than the Raiders will be
outscored upon in the regular season, but will we see that improvement on defense  vs. 2013 in the post season ( assuming Mount gets there)? :-\

Assuming they get there, 68?!  To the postseason??  I understand some caution, but come on now!  Eventually that will be a real concern.  2014 is not that time though.

Next Saturday in Ada will tell us something.  Personally I think what it will tell us is that ONU can't stop Mount from scoring just like they couldn't stop Berg from scoring.  The difference will be that Magazine and Angle aren't putting up video game stats against Mount.  But I guess I would have said JCU would score all over ONU today and that definitely wasn't the case.  We shall see next week.

Spurrier

Ms spurrier and I enjoyed the homecoming festivities in Ada on sat except the final score. Fall weather, nice stadium, good people, well played football...we look forward to a return trip in November...go polar bears
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Results of Week #5 of the OAC Pick-Em have been posted.

joelmama was nearly perfect this week with 14 points out of the possible 15.

theaprof continues to lead this contest in both points and humility.  He is obviously still waiting for that disastrous week so he can tell us all "he told us all".   :P

Week #6 spreads will be out Monday night.

I assume Mt. covered against Capital? Seriously though I was at BW yesterday and though it wasn't pretty BW finally put away a scrappy bunch. Muskingum gave them a good game for the first half and if they had anyone who could throw the football or just be able to hold onto it we might have had a closer game. That first quarter fumble returned for a td was tough. Thanks for all the great BW folks for a great day also.

raiderpa

The Mount D is getting more challenged in  practice than they have the first few weeks.  I would like to think they are much improved, but will not be convinced until they face someone who will match up with some more strength, speed, and coaching than they have seen this far.  Unfortunately that may not be until JCU.  Maybe I am alone on this, but I would like to see the defense have to make some adjustments on the fly and handle some adversity before the playoffs...
