LL - maybe Montana?  Posted a few days ago on West boards....

No disrespect towards LL but the article states he is the "biggest name in DIII....since Gagliardi". How about biggest name since LK?

Two things:

1. Shows nobody outside of D-III knows anything about D-III (not a surprise, right?)
2. John Gagliardi coached in Montana before St. John's, so perhaps that's the local tie he chose.

I think too it would be great to have a national award named after LK. Keep his name in the game always.

Great idea.   I think the LK omission from the Montana article is more what Pat said about Gagliardi and maybe the fact of "what have you done for me lately since LK is not actively coaching/head coach at this point.     Unfortunately for those of us close to DIII football, it is a glaring omission.

Two cool facts I saw today regarding the Mount/W&J game...

Mount (739) and W&J (707) are 2 of only 3 D3 programs with 700 wins.

Mount (26) and W&J (24) also have the most playoff appearances all-time.

A couple of storied programs in D3!

Was Montana officially even a state yet when Gagliardi coached there? I had no idea he ever coached anyplace else. How was his record at Montana? I heard he started out as a hockey coach before trying football. Perhaps thats what he coached at Montana.

He coached at Carroll College in Montana, he didn't actually coach at this Montana.

In addition he often told players to "not talk publicly about the game". It was referred to as "Gags order" and that is where we  get the mondern saying of the 'Gag order'. True story. Oh wait - sorry I was just watching "Sherman and Mr. Peabody". ;D

Number two in D3 wins is Wittenberg who I believe is 3 games back and counting.  Mount Union passed up Wittenberg last year when they beat them last year in the second round of the playoffs.  Mount over took Penn State this year to move into 16th place.  Michigan is in first but trying not to stay there.

I think Witt suspended their count for the year. Good call on Michigan. I was a fan right up until they canned Lloyd Carr. I think their current demise is the football gods seeking vengence - or maybe Bo reaching out from beyond the grave.

So far as I know (and I'm a local and UM grad), Lloyd was not canned - he retired.  The guy before him (name is escaping me at the moment) was canned after a drunken public performance in suburban Detroit.  His successor, Rich Rodriquez, was canned after several horrendous seasons (Rich Rod is now enjoying great success in Arizona).  His successor, Brady Hoke (widely reviled as Brady Joke), will be fired by next week.  Of the last six coaches, Bo and Lloyd are the only ones who retired of their own free will.

Bo is the only one who retired "of his own free will". Lloyd had said he was going to retire at seasons end and he was going to be involved in the transition to new Coach (and have a say in replacement)...and then App State happened. UM started scouting replacements at that time. I have a friend who was a grad asst in WV athletics dept. People there were talking about RichRod and UM during the season. Maybe fired is the wrong word - but he was ushered to the door and I never liked the way UM handle that, or RichRods recruitment. I always saw it as shady (RR) and a crappy way to reward a guy that gave 35years to your program (LC). I believe UM got into alot of trouble for contacting RR through back channels, during the season, without WV knowledge.

Ah,yes, Gary Moeller.  He didn't last long enough to know if he was a good coach.  I don't recall the details of his drunken performance, but it must have been spectacular as he was fired the very next day.

Mr. Ypsi

desertraider,

I had hints of what you have said, but it was still a retirement by Lloyd Carr (of his own free will).

Michigan is inordinately proud of having won more football games than any other college in the country.  They had better get back on the winning track REAL quick if they want to keep that status.

Gary Moeller was head coach at UM for 5 years and his teams won more than 75% of there games while he was head coach there.  I'm not a UM fan because I root for OSU which were Gary played in college.

Gary resigned in May 1995 following an incident that occured a month earlier at a Michigan restaurant where he was allegedly drunk and charged with disorderly conduct.  Gary's son Andy played football at UM and now is the offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns.  Unfortunately Gary has had 3 alcohol related arrest in his coaching career but seems to have turned things around since he was suspended for 2 games by NFL when he was coaching for Ravens in 2011.
