reality check

It's the off-season and the board is dead so for those that remember my basketball coaching ordeal I shared from last year, I am happy to update and say that I was just offered the head varsity basketball job at a brand new high school opening in the 2015-16 school-year in an amazing school district.  I was also fortunate enough to design the new school's logo along the way.  Great news and can't wait to get back to running my program!  Thanks for the support along the way guys.  Some of you provided me with great feedback and some levity along the way.

Congrats, RC.

Ladies' or men's BB?

New district - merger of existing?  Split from a school that was getting too big?  Any likely hot prospects coming your way?

Good luck!

It's girls bball.  Here's a brief rundown.  I was the varsity HC of a program for two years.  In my two years we went 26-27 including a 15-12 record in year two.  Prior to my arrival the team had a record of 39-177 all-time.  This year they're 3-17 so far.  I have the two winningest seasons in program history.  AD recommended re-hire in eval.  Principal fired AD.  Principal emailed me to tell me she wasn't interested in me returning.  She never attended a game or practice.  I had zero eligibility issues and no parent complaints in my two seasons.  Principal let go of 13 varsity head coaches across the board last year in similar fashion.

New school is near the old one but in a different district.  The district is revered as one of the destination districts in the state to work/coach.  They will be a 7-12 school but will open next fall with 7-9 and grow from there.  So I will have control of the program from 7th grade up (which is awesome from a developmental standpoint).  It will be a building process but that appeals to me.  I teach at a school that is now 6 years old.  I was here from day one and started this program too but as an assistant coach and worked my way through JV until the other varsity job was offered to me at the other school.  I hope to take what I learned, both good and bad, while building this program and apply it at the new school.  When the school grows to full capacity, they anticipate somewhere around 1200-1400 students which puts the school in the middle divisions for AZ.

I think this job has huge upside and to be there from day one of the high school's growth will be amazing.  Can't wait to get the gym finished so I can start working the kids out.  And I'm not going to lie, it will be cool to see my logo at center court.

TBD.  They wanted to let me know the coaching position is a go and they're trying to figure out if they can get me on campus from the beginning.  Lots of complicated, moving pieces since I am an elective teacher.  By year two, they are confident they'd have a position but for year one, they're still trying to figure it out.

I will hopefully coach football as well but I hope that comes with being on campus.  So if they get me on campus year one, I would teach, coach football and run the girls bball program.  If they can't get me on campus year one, I will continue to teach at the current school, coach football where I was last year (ten minutes from my teaching job) and then coach girls bball at the new school.  It's still very do-able.

RC:

Congratulations on the new appointment!  I know you will do well (you have already proved it).  It certainly is disappointing that some people (i.e. the AD you formerly were under) have personal agendas and are disingenuous (I'm being nice and using restraint on myself from using a more severe appropriate term :-X) in how they conduct their business and how they treat people.  Some just never learn and they have no clue as to "The Golden Rule".  At any rate, you have put that behind you and it is time to move on to this new, exciting chapter in your life.  Keep us posted.  All the best to you.

P.S.  I'm jealous!  I want to coach again like you! ;)

Very cool, RC!  Good luck.

Your situation at your previous school reminded me of when a family friend was forced out as a girl's HC here in Ohio because the parents weren't pleased with a 12-11 season.  This was less than 12 months after their senior-laden team went 24-1 and played for a state title!  Before he got there they had never even won a district title.  He delivered a funny line in response to dealing with parents after that incident.  When asked where he thought he'd coach next he said "I'm not coaching again unless you hear of an opening for the HC of an orphanage."
