As far as Detroit as a whole, I will grant you that.  However, in reality, as ohiofan alludes to there are a few decent spots.  Ford Field is a great stadium and place for the football bowl game and the surrounding few blocks of Greektown with a variety of great restaurants and sports bars are excellent.  But, don't wander beyond that. :o ::) ;)  At the same time, you are right; the trip  up I-75 is so short from Toledo, it would not have been much of an exhilarating experience for Campbell and his team.

BTW, do you really think (other than the $), it would be the best move for Campbell to take the Iowa State job if it is offered?  That is rivaling Eastern Michigan as the "Graveyard of Coaches".  If it is good $ (and it will obviously be a larger contract and improved deal for him), I wouldn't blame him from taking it, however, I think he can do better.

New reports say Toledo is offering a big raise and are doing everything they can to keep Campbell.

That is good.  Again, while I would not blame him for seeking the next step, on the other hand, he has started to build a very good program at Toledo and I could see him establishing a legacy there.  We'll see what happens.  Regardless, I'm sure it is a difficult decision for him, but I do not doubt he will do what is best for him and his family.

Campbell is reportedly making $495,000 this year, and the Toledo Blade reported that Toledo made Campbell an offer to make him the best-paid coach in the MAC. That distinction currently belongs to P.J. Fleck of Western Michigan — at $800,000, according to the USA Today national database.  The previous Iowa State Cyclones football head coach Paul Rhoads is reported to have a salary around $2.2 million so it looks like either way Matt is in for a big raise.

Some additional connection of Matt Campbell to Iowa State is Louis Ayeni was Matt's running back coach at Toledo before joining Iowa State's staff in January 2014.  Reportedly Ayeni is very close to the Cyclone's best player 1,000 yard tailback Mike Warren who was originally recruited to Toledo by both Campbell and Ayeni only to sign with Iowa State when Ayeni went there. Warren earlier today told the Des Moines Register after Iowa State's 30-6 season-ending loss to West Virginia when asked about the publish reports of Campbell-to-Iowa State "I (had) a good connection with (Campbell) when I went on my visit, "  on Saturday. Warren was. "He's a great guy. I'd be all for that."

Wow  Great for Matt.  Let the bidding begin.

Matt Campbell turns 36 tomorrow.  It looks like he has a pretty good birthday present coming up.

Matt currently is the second youngest coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Just saw on the FS1 ticker that Campbell has accepted the Iowa State job.

There are multiple similar posting on Twitter as well along with a few still coming in on Matt still interviewing for the Missouri job.  It looks like the Iowa State job is a done deal. Congratulations and happy birthday to Matt.  Iowa State is the prefect place for Matt.  He already has some connections there. Missouri is a mess and I'm glad Matt stayed away from there.

Matt Campbell to Iowa State has to be true because Wikipedia already says it is so.  Damn they are fast.

Congrats to Campbell.  Hope he takes ONU alum and current Toledo assistant Bryan Gasser along with him (unless Toledo thinks Bryan would make a great head coach of course).  ;)

Might be more interesting to see if Jason Candle is offered the Toledo job, or if he goes with Campbell to Iowa State.

Iowa State has cancelled interviews with other candidates.

An unnamed source confirms to the Des Moines Register that Campbell is the choice.

Now, in as unbiased of analysis as Mount Union fans can muster, is this a good move for Iowa State?

Thanks in advance for the info.

I think Campbell is a good hire for Iowa State.  He is a very good recruiter, with a great rapport with his players.  This will enhance recruiting when word gets out and he will be able to recruit above what the program has in the past, IMO.
His family is all in and they make the team their family and this cannot do any thing but help recruiting and as you know, recruiting is the key.
He also has a good record of developing players.
His QB at Toledo was pedestrian and he still won with him.

I think he will make a difference there.  But, I am biased as I love the kid.  He is a typical Midwestern kid who works his but off, is appreciative of everything that comes his way and is respectful of all.  Kudos to his parents.

I really do feel sorry for all of those smaller programs that end up losing their only chance at some real success within the FBS.  It sucks that money rules the nest in just about anything that is worthwhile.   "Yeah, remember that one year that Temple actually got ranked?  Yeah, that was like 20 years ago wasn't it?"

I know exactly the feeling.  The last time Eastern Michigan ever won a bowl game (1987), Cal-Berkeley immediately hired away our coach.

Campbell's first year salary reported to be $2 Million.

Hard to turn that down. Game changer for his family.
