Mt.
Before coming on your board today I wanted to watch the replay of the game so that I could accurately point out all the reasons Mt got so lucky.  ESPN must have edited all those plays out.

Congrats to the Mt players, coaches, program and fans.  There was no question yesterday as to the better team, in all aspects (except field goal kicking and punting).

No team is perfect, but to Mt's credit, the coaching staff exposed all the weaknesses of UWW.  I really appreciated the heady and athletic play of T. Scott and the sheer determination of Nemeth.  Lally is non-stop.  The speed of the defense closed any holes that might have briefly been made.

Also, I was really surprised and impressed with the campus and the stadium, for some reason I pictured it looking older.  A beautiful setting.

Lastly, about some of the fans.  I was sitting next to some.  This isn't a Mt thing, as I've seen it at other schools.  For all I know, UWW may have some that act that way (it's hard to tell as the Perk is set up differently).  As a fan that drove 450 miles to enjoy a game, I do wish the couple obnoxious ones that chose to sit in the UWW section would have focused their energy on the game and not at UWW fans, but in no way do I think of that group as representative of Mt.  It's just one of those things.

If Mt brings the same execution to the Stagg, I will be surprised if the size of St. Thomas will be enough to offset the skill and speed of Mt.

Congrats on a great game and season.

We try and try to get the obnoxious fans out of there.  They are mostly townies with no real ties to the school.  Please be assured that most real UMU fans have a lot of respect for the Warhawks and all that they have accomplished.  I am sure that we will meet again.

Pat has banned a few of the most obnoxious ones from these pages and we need to do a better job of making sure those a$$holes shut their mouths during the games.

Good luck next season and congratulations on everything your team accomplished this season!

Agree 100%. It's impossible to control completely.  Doesn't reflect anything on the Mount fan base at all IMO. The "nah nah nah Good Bye" by the student section are just part of the fun of a student going to the game and having your team win. I know the students in the end zone were harassing the guys when they were on the field on their end.   But that's different. I assume that's why they are there! I have no idea what they were yelling (to know if they were yelling over the top stuff) but I do know it didn't bother our guys at all.

Overall, I think it was a great atmosphere and I believe our guys really enjoyed playing there.

It's the price of success.  I grew up in Alliance in the 60's and most townies (ignorant hillbillies I suppose according to you)  didn't go to Mount games because we weren't really interested in seeing football played by rich white kids against teams of other rich white kids (we can stereotype too).   Plus, Mount wasn't very good back then.   If you wanted to see good football in Mount's stadium, you went Friday night to see Alliance against Massillon or Canton Mckinley and did something else Saturday afternoon.  But, times have changed.  Mount's more than good now and I'm sure they've drawn some townie support, especially since the current quarterback is a former townie (I'm assuming his family was not previously connected with Mount).  I'm guessing you're glad Mount has that townie.  I've become a Mount fan too.  I was at Wright-Patt from 85-88 and went to Mount's first playoff game when they shocked Dayton.  I also  went to the  2000 Stagg Bowl when they beat St. John's and am thinking about making the 3 1/2 hour drive from Northern Virginia to see Friday's game in Salem.  If I go, I'll try not to act as an obnoxious townie so you and the other Mount blue bloods are not embarrassed.  Maybe you could print up a code of conduct for townies and ex-townies to follow and we could pick it up at the stadium ticket office.

Why get your dander up?  It is a fact that there are certain people that most likely are "townies" that exhibit poor sportsmanship at Mount games. I have seen it.  Most were not there in the 70's when I started watching MUC(first QB I remember is Gary Frost).  They came in the 90's when the machine was fully built an operational.  Good natured cheering and jeering is accepted and encouraged.  Some of the BS that we see from a small portion not so much.  If you want to support bad behavior that is your right.  Just don't expect a lot of support from most Mount fans.

I'm sorry, I didn't intend to overshadow the game with comment on a small number of fans.
Rest assured, their actions in no way diminish the positive perception of the university and team.

Game Question.  Did anybody have a good view of the deep ball thrown to Marcus Hudson to open the 3rd quarter?
From our seats (about 5 rows up), it looked like he had a chance to make the catch.  I'm curious if someone with a better view has another perspective.

Yes it is my opinion from the game replay he had a real shot at catching that pass. The TV guys made a similar point in the replay. He did not extend or make a dive at the ball that seemed just inches away from his finger tips. Would have made for a change in momentum in my opinion.
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

It landed about 2 yards in front of him from my view (30 yard line).  I thought he might of had a chance for the ball but he did not even try to reach or dive for it.

It was certainly strange because Hudson's reaction/body language would have made you think it was 5 yds overthrown when it most definitely was not.  He didn't even really extend his arms for it.  I think he would have had to lay out for it, but he didn't really do anything.

I don't remember Gary Frost.  The quarterback I remember was Larry Kehres.  I remember he played a half and another quarterback (Unger?) played the other half. That was probably 1970 or so.  Mount used to open the gates at halftime so when I was in high school I saw a lot of second halves .  Sometimes I saw Kehres and sometimes I saw the other guy.  I've often wondered what became of that Kehres guy.

I don't support bad behavior, but I question the implication by you and the original poster that it's only a townie problem.  I can't believe that there has never been an obnoxious fan affiliated with Mount and that if you just kept the townies out, there'd never be a fan problem.   I've never understood why someone would pay to go to a game to be obnoxious, but they do.

Mount may be better, but they're not 30 points better.  Whitewater having to settle for two field goals when they were dominating the first quarter (at one point something like 126-11 in yardage) was huge.  Mount immediately took momentum by going ahead 7-6.  It would've been different if they had to come back from 10-0 or 14-0.

I'm also sorry you had problems with some obnoxious fans.  I didn't want you to think that I condoned their behavior because I have a difference of opinion with the other Mount posters.

I've always looked forward to watching Whitewater and Mount play over the years.  As a Mount fan I can't say I always enjoy it because you guys are too good.    It's comparable to the feeling I get watching the Ravens play the Steelers.  The only difference is I hate the Steelers and if I wasn't a Mount fan I'd probably be a Whitewater fan.  You guys play and act the right way on and off the field.  I'm sure we'll see you next year.

Hi guys.

That was a fun weekend regardless of my team's performance. Hats off to the Raiders. Talk about flawless, relentless execution on both sides. Mount made zero stupid mistakes and capitalized on every one of ours. No penalties all day that were painful.

My observation: seems to me that once you guys picked nelson off, he lost all accuracy. There was never a decent completion downrange again. He held the ball too long and starting taking sacks. Lost confidence? Someone said he was banged up? I didn't know anything about that. He looked fine, but definitely lost his MOJO.

The game of inches was key. We could not convert on 3rd downs, kept falling one yard short, end of drives. Every time we had you, MR. Scott would scramble and kept the drive alive. We could not contain that guy. Then your RB's got hot and found holes again and again. Your receivers were HUGE. Big talents.

I, with many others in attendance, were puzzled with some of our play calling. I think going for it on 4th and 2 from OUR 20 with 10 minutes left was the end of the game. Running the ball right at the defense that dominating you? Oh boy. After that failure, you could see that it was over.

Seems your team is playing with supreme confidence. They are definitely on a mission. I will be shocked if the Tommies can win next week after watching that.

Warhawks only graduate a few starters. Mount graduates a ton. So, just wait till next year!!

Met a bunch of great Mount fans/alumni prior to the game, was taken to the stadium by a great old alum Dentist that we were having a few beers alongside at BW3.  Beautiful campus. No dorms?? Looks like all apartment style student housing. I would love to see that place in early May when everything is alive and lush with life.

Spent the night in Alliance. Went out for dinner and drinks. Met and talked with fans and locals. Discussed the conduct of some Mount fans. We probably saw the same dickheads others were mentioning. Were they in the front row right behind the Warhawk bench? Those were students, or grads.  I was having words with a few mocking and arrogant students walking in to the stadium as well. Some were very vocal about how dare we sit in their stadium. I asked them please point us to the visitor section and we'll gladly sit there. At the Perk it's pretty clear where the visitors should sit. The townies we socialized with were not big fans of the students. They didn't like the arrogance of kids that acted like that just because they came from somewhere else.

Best shirt seen on students: Breathe if you hate Whitewater. LOL.  ::)

Overall, great experience. I'd say good luck next week but I don't believe in luck. The harder you work, the luckier you get. The Raiders have only one thing on their minds. I don't think they will be denied.

In other news, no broad statement is ever 100% true.  No one said only townies are obnoxious...but I think the point folks are making is that the fans behind the opposing bench (my favorite group of purple wig wearing middle aged men) appear largely to have no affiliation with Mount Union other than being from Alliance.

Oh, and every university has its share of obnoxious fans...the only difference is Mount Union beats a ton of teams whose fans probably thought they had a shot at taking down the Raiders, and it adds a little more sting having to hear it from the fans the entire game.

Interesting Fact from the Game Notes Provided by MTU:

QuoteIron-Men: Three Raiders -- defensive lineman Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward), defensive back Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and linebacker Jonathan Gonell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./University School) -- have played in every Mount Union game since 2012 meaning that this week will be game No. 60 for each.

You're right, it's a game of inches.   The one bad throw Taurice made didn't cost him because the your defender couldn't get a foot down for an interception.   I think no Mount turnovers was the difference maker.  When you run inside as much as Mount does against a hard hitting team such as WW, you expect a couple of fumble to change momentum.  It just didn't happen Saturday.

I don't understand why there were Mount fans sitting behind the WW bench.  That area should've been reserved for visiting fans.  If Mount fans sat there, they should've been escorted out of there by Security.   I assume there was Security in the visiting fans area, especially since Mount seems to be aware they have a number of "a$$hole" fans.  Actually, I don't know why they're letting long known troublemakers in in the first place.  But, if they let them in, then it's Mount's responsibility to police them.

As a former townie, I probably have the same impression of the out of town Mount students as the people you talked to.  For the most part the Mount students from Alliance have more respect for the town.  I've had two cousins from Alliance who went to Mount on full scholarships (couldn't come close to affording it otherwise) and I've known quite a few Alliance people who went to Mount and all of them would warmly welcome you to sit in their stadium even as the "enemy".   The ones I know would probably go out of their way to show you where the visitors sit.  I'm glad you enjoyed your visit (except for the game result) and good luck next year.
