Why get your dander up?  It is a fact that there are certain people that most likely are "townies" that exhibit poor sportsmanship at Mount games. I have seen it.  Most were not there in the 70's when I started watching MUC(first QB I remember is Gary Frost).  They came in the 90's when the machine was fully built an operational.  Good natured cheering and jeering is accepted and encouraged.  Some of the BS that we see from a small portion not so much.  If you want to support bad behavior that is your right.  Just don't expect a lot of support from most Mount fans.

I don't remember Gary Frost.  The quarterback I remember was Larry Kehres.  I remember he played a half and another quarterback (Unger?) played the other half. That was probably 1970 or so.  Mount used to open the gates at halftime so when I was in high school I saw a lot of second halves .  Sometimes I saw Kehres and sometimes I saw the other guy.  I've often wondered what became of that Kehres guy.

I don't support bad behavior, but I question the implication by you and the original poster that it's only a townie problem.  I can't believe that there has never been an obnoxious fan affiliated with Mount and that if you just kept the townies out, there'd never be a fan problem.   I've never understood why someone would pay to go to a game to be obnoxious, but they do.

In other news, no broad statement is ever 100% true.  No one said only townies are obnoxious...but I think the point folks are making is that the fans behind the opposing bench (my favorite group of purple wig wearing middle aged men) appear largely to have no affiliation with Mount Union other than being from Alliance.

Oh, and every university has its share of obnoxious fans...the only difference is Mount Union beats a ton of teams whose fans probably thought they had a shot at taking down the Raiders, and it adds a little more sting having to hear it from the fans the entire game.

You're right.  I went back and looked and the poster said most were townies.  My townie-colored glasses sometimes let me see things that aren't there.  I'm still puzzled as to why the middle aged purple wig wearers were allowed to sit behind the WW bench.  Wasn't that area reserved for WW fans or was the visiting section somewhere else?

reality check

So since, Mount had something to prove on Saturday (and finally did), do we assume they continue to have something to prove in Salem or have they done all the proving they needed to do and come out on autopilot at the Stagg Bowl?  Waiting on the riveting analysis in response to this question.

Whoa! Don't know where you're coming from, but I truly resent your initial comments.

I am a graduate of Mount Union, class of 1957 (wow, that's a long time ago). Born and raised in Alliance, we were a middle class family, white, but hardly rich. My dad worked at B&W (steel mill for those out of the area) with an 8th grade education. I paid my way through Mount by working full time in the summer and after school in the evening. I did this while many of my friends sat on their backsides and hung out in the pool rooms.

I realize this is a touchy subject, but please adopt a different attitude. After a diatribe like that, it's easy to not pay much attention to any further comments you may make. And after all, it's good to hear from everyone.

We're all Raider fans, Mount people, "townies" or any one else who roots for the Purple Raiders!
Good luck in the Stagg and Merry Christmas to all.

I have sat on the visitors side near the "towny" section the past two Mount games I attended at the stadium.  I found them to be more knowledgeable of the current team than I and far from obnoxious.  I could see how a fan of a visiting team could be offended by some of the observations and comments, but they need to have thicker skin. Over the past 20 years I've gone to quite a few University of Florida games in "The Swamp."  I'm somewhat of a UF fan and I was offended by some of the ignorant and offensive comments directed at fans from the visiting teams.  These people are most likely wealthy alums and know little about the game, the coaching staff, or the opponents and rant.  This is typical behavior at SEC games.  The best and most reliable Mount fans over the years has been the "townies."  They show up every Saturday and have adopted the Raiders as their team even if they have no direct ties to the school.  This is football, not the ballet.

I have a similar story.  I couldn't afford to go to college right away (my Dad worked at Royal China in Sebring) , so I went in the Air Force and used my GI Bill to eventually graduate from Wright State  Mount was always out of my family's reach, but I've had two Alliance cousins graduate from Mount.  Sons of an auto mechanic, they received full scholarships and would not have been able to go otherwise.  My family appreciates the opportunity Mount provided them.

I just overreacted to the comment made that it's mostly townies that are the obnoxious fans that the Whitewater fans saw.  It just seemed to be saying that the obnoxious fans are not a Mount problem, but a town problem.   Why not just say that we have some obnoxious Mount fans - why single them out as townies.  It just seemed to be an unnecessary cheap shot at Alliance.  I probably shouldn't be so sensitive, especially since I've lived in Virginia since '88. .

Merry Christmas to you, too.

Looking ahead to Friday - is Coach Kehres on the sideline or up in the booth? The last few head coaches we have faced have been up in the booth which changes the decision making process a bit.

Which Coach Kehres?

Vince, current HC, is on the sidelines.
Larry, former HC and current QB Coach, is in the booth.

Interesting Fact from the Game Notes Provided by MTU:

QuoteIron-Men: Three Raiders -- defensive lineman Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward), defensive back Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and linebacker Jonathan Gonell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./University School) -- have played in every Mount Union game since 2012 meaning that this week will be game No. 60 for each.

All three are tremendous football players.
Speaking of iron men- does Lally rotate out?

Lally doesn't rotate out that I have seen. Knowing him (a little) you couldn't drag him off. He leaves when the 2nd unit is on.

Didn't see Lally off the field Saturday.  The kid is a beast.  When we were at the facility at 4:00 for a 7:30 kickoff he was getting in a workout and didn't look pleased that people were watching him.  Gotta love the edge and work ethic.

Vince, although I forgot that Larry was back on the staff and up in the booth now.

Just a comment on the crowd at the game. The covered side is the home side and is WAY more reserved than the open side crowd is - the boos were definitely from the open side where I was sitting. As far as Mount fans behind the Warhawk bench goes - it really is the only choice. I have been to games where the visitors are wedged in the middle of the open side with Mount fans on either side of them, and that is a bad idea (IMO). Not sure if they did this for this game. It appeared to me that the UWW fans were at the end of the open side seats. While it puts Mount fans behind the bench - it doesn't put UWW fans in the middle which would have been worse.

My observation: seems to me that once you guys picked nelson off, he lost all accuracy. There was never a decent completion downrange again. He held the ball too long and starting taking sacks. Lost confidence? Someone said he was banged up? I didn't know anything about that. He looked fine, but definitely lost his MOJO.

Starting with the end of the 2nd drive resulting in a FG, your QB came off and laid on the table where a trainer kept working on the back of his right leg. This wasn't after every drive but was more frequent as the game went on, especially in the 3rd qtr. as Mount's LBs seemed to hit him on every play and he was running around a lot more. He was favoring that leg walking around on the sideline as well. The kid is definitely a gamer.

Sorry that it's taken me a while to drop by.  That was as through a butt waxing as we've experienced in some time.  Dominated and out played in every aspect possible.  Left no doubt as to who was the better.  Congratulations and good luck.
