FWIW, I don't have an issue with wanting more than 4 home games. We all want to see our teams. I hate it when Ithaca only has four home games too.

But the post about road games being a "waste of a Saturday" because Mount is too good and the games are non-competitive? Why would you expect anyone else to even remotely relate to that?

emma17

Personally I didn't read any of the posts from Mt guys as looking for sympathy (as one poster claimed) or looking for others to "relate" to their situation.

For me, beyond love of alma mater, football is entertainment. I enjoy watching the best players compete and play well- especially in close games.  Mt fans only saw that for about the equivalent of one full game last year.
From an entertainment standpoint, I'd much rather watch the first half of a blowout at home than on the road.
And I'd much rather watch my team get blown out at home than on the road- it was a long, miserable drive home from Alliance last year.

I get it. We all have preferences. It was literally the specific term "Waste of a Saturday" that made me scoff. I mean, would I rather watch a close game than an endless string of blowouts? Probably. But I guess to me, there's a difference between "Man, sometimes I wish we played an exciting game" and "Well, this trip was a wasted day." You're watching your favorite team play football, play well, and win. That's just a really odd thing to complain about.

EDIT: Just to add, I remember going with my dad to see Ithaca beat Hobart 63-7 in 1989, the last game before the two athletic departments threw a simultaneous hissy fit over the terrible football/lacrosse imbalances and called it quits. And I will admit, I was bored and kind of wandered around the stadium. But the sun was shining, I got to watch the Bombers with my dad. I don't know how I'd get to the point where I'd ever say that experience was a waste.

As a follow up to my statement about "wasting a Saturday", it should be noted that I was the radio guy that HAD to attend the blowout road games when no one wanted to be there, even occasionally the opponent (ala Wilmington), knowing full well that no one was listening back in town after halftime.

Here's the typical road trip to Wilmington from Alliance:  Leave home at 8:00 AM and drive 4 hours, arrive 1.5 hours before kickoff to set up & get the pregame recorded, 3 hours on a 63-0 blowout, 15 minutes for an abbreviated post-game and breaking down the equipment, then 4 hours heading home to arrive around 8:30 or 9:00 PM.

That my friends is the textbook definition of wasting a Saturday!
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

With the score being 56-0 at halftime.

Meaning you're broadcasting a second half where one team can't score and the other team ties itself in knots trying NOT to score.

VERY exciting.

Oh, well, that's totally different then. My bad, I thought you were just attending as a fan. Yeah, I've broadcast some lousy games before, and it absolutely at times felt like "Why are we doing this? Who is listening?" So I get it.

I remember doing the halftime show for the first ever Ithaca/Utica game, which was 35-0 in the first quarter and eventually ended 66-0. We're absolutely going through the motions and my partner asks me what Utica's goals should be in the 2nd half. I think all I had was like "Try not to get anyone hurt, maybe get in the red zone?" It was kind of a disaster

This is amusing. My one experience as a student broadcaster and a blowout like that was also against Utica. I think Brockport only got to 49-0 though. But I think it was 35-0 after 1 quarter as well. I agree this can be pretty boring. Especially if the dogs are called off really early.

I would rather waste a saturday on the road to witness a Raider blowout than endure a Sunday watching the Cleveland Clowns. I love when a team is executing at a high level and if that causes blowouts... So be it.

As for D3 players making the pros, i feel there is a prejudice that results in players not being taken seriously. No matter how good they practice the D3 player is always gonna be doubted for not playing D1 ball. Johnny Manzeil didnt even play 4 years and was judged to be better than pros who were backups in the pros. Go figure!

I would have to agree that watching a great team and great players at the D3 level executing at a high level is still entertaining. How many times has Alabama or Michigan blown out a team yet it was still fun to watch. Likewise in the pros, The Steelers in the late '70's were still great no matter who they played. the same goes for the 49er's of the '80's with Montana and Rice.

I also agree that D# players don't always get a fair shake. Theirs is usually a longer road to go. That being said, people like Mike Frank and Tom Lally can make if given a chance. They won't be full of themselves the way Johnny Football has been. For Frank to make it, he will have to play guard but he is just as strong as most, if not all, D1 defensive tackles. That means he can handle them. I heard he was up to about 280 lbs. now. Tom Lally is in the same situation. He is strong, has the right technique and incredible quickness. There's is even talk of looking at having young men playing the 3 technique at a smaller size in the pros (i.e. 6' 2" and 285 lbs). Good example of why sheer size is not totally needed is Ndamakong Suh. He is 300 lbs. but the reason he is so good is his strength and speed. That equates to power. When he is used properly, he is a terror on the field to any offensive lineman. But for Frank and Lally, they need to be given a chance. Most likely they will start in the CFL or Europe if they catch on with any team. Then, they can prove themselves. We shall see. I wish them the best of luck!!

I respectfully retract my smart ass remark as well.  I also do radio broadcasting and have worked games like those.  And in those instances regardless of the day of the week it is wasted time.  Generally I just think, "Beam me up Scottie."  ;)

It appears the consensus is a 63-0 type game is a wasted day only if you are obligated to go to the away game because duties such as broadcasting, but it's not a wasted day if you go as a fan.

If I drive 8 hours to and from an away game that is over in the first quarter, I'm still thinking I wasted my day. There is an opportunity cost. Personally I hope for lasting memories of the games I attend. Those memories are weighed against what I could have done that Saturday.
